In white-rumped munia, early auditory experience is critical for normal song development. New neurons are constantly added to the telencephalon in juveniles. We examined the potential role of auditory experience in regulating the developmental changes in the song nuclei and the survival of newborn cells.

The subventricular zone (SVZ), lining the lateral ventricle in forebrain, retains a population of neuronal precursors with the ability of proliferation in adult mammals. To test the potential of neuronal precursors in adult mice, we transplanted adult SVZ cells labeled with fluorescent dye PKH26 into the lateral ventricle of the mouse brain in different development stages. The preliminary results indicated that the grafted cells were able to survive and migrate into multiple regions of the recipient brain, including SVZ, the third ventricle, thalamus, superior colliculus, inferior colliculus, cerebellum and olfactory bulb etc; and the amount of survival cells in different brain regions was correlated with the development stage of the recipient brain.

The missense mutation, C677T (Ala--->Val), in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene, is related to hyperhomocysteinemia and is regarded as a risk factor for coronary artery disease and neural tube defects. The prevalence of this mutation was reported to differ among various ethnic groups, but there are few reports concerning Asian populations. We have investigated the frequencies of C677T mutation in 124 Korean infants (residents in Seoul city, Korea) and 115 Japanese adults (residents in Kobe city, Japan), and compared them with the reported data from other ethnic groups.

A common mutation, C677T, in the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) reduces the activity of MTHFR and increases total homocysteine levels in plasma. Increased homocysteine levels are reportedly associated with high serum uric acid levels. The relationship between the MTHFR mutation and uric acid metabolism remains unclear, however.

Nucleus taenia (Tn) in birds is a discrete component of a loosely defined archistriatal structure, the posterior and medial archistriatum. By virtue of its hypothalamic projections, the posterior and medial archistriatum is thought to be an avian homolog of the amygdala in mammals. A recent fluorogold (FG) study of avian hippocampus revealed backfilled labels in nucleus Tn, suggesting that this nucleus may indeed be the homolog of mammalian amygdala.

The two main song control nuclei in the zebra finch forebrain, the higher vocal center (HVC) and the robust nucleus of the archistriatum (RA), receive cholinergic innervation from the ventral paleostriatum (VP) of the basal forebrain which may play a key role in song learning. By injecting two kinds of neuroanatomical tracers, we found that a topographically segregated pathway from nucleus ovoidalis (Ov) and nucleus dorsomedialis posterior thalami (DMP) to VP and further to RA and HVC. Ov is known as a major relay in the main ascending auditory pathway.

It was the first time demonstrated by us that the number of newborn neurons was increased after making lesion in forebrain of adult ring dove (Streptopelia risoria) by means of autoradiography and immunohistochemistry. Neurogenesis in the adult avian is restricted to the telencephalon. In doves with bilateral electrolytic lesion of nucleus ectostriatum (E), the mean number of proliferating cells in the lateral ventricular zone (LVZ) and newborn neurons in the forebrain increased by 1.

Studies in songbirds suggest that neurogenesis during the first few years of life is related to song learning. In this study, we examined whether postnatal neurogenesis occurs in a nonsongbird, the ring dove (Streptoplia risoria), and whether it persists to old age. Twenty-four hours after a single intramuscular injection of [3H]thymidine, labeled cells were present in the brains, particularly in the lateral wall of the lateral ventricle of juvenile (3-month and 8-month) and adult (1-year to 8-year) doves.

In this study, we have investigated the neuroanatomical pathways that may underlie the influence of a female bird's vocal behavior upon her own reproductive endocrine response. We traced the ascending efferent projections of the midbrain vocal control nucleus, the intercollicularis (ICo), using an anterograde tracer, PHAL, delivered by iontophoretic application. We found labelled terminal fields in the anterior regions of the hypothalamus that contained luteinizing hormone releasing hormone- (LHRH) immunoreactive neurons.

Pathways associated with a recently defined region of the avian auditory thalamus, the shell of the nucleus ovoidalis (Ov), were examined for met-enkephalin immunoreactivity. The presence of enkephalin-like immunoreactive (ELI) perikarya within the medial margin of the inferior colliculus (ICM), afferent to the Ov shell, implicated ICM as a source of ELI fibers within the Ov shell and tract. The shell also contained ELI perikarya and its targets, including the ventromedial hypothalamus and caudoventral paleostriatal complex, were characterized by ELI fields.

Following bilateral lesions to the posterior medial hypothalamus (homologue of the mammalian ventromedial nucleus), adult male ring doves regain full courtship behavior and the ability to stimulate female egg-laying when housed continuously with females. Males with PMH lesions housed singly and only tested periodically with females continue to show deficits in courtship. These findings suggest that the social environment present in adulthood itself can directly influence recovery from brain lesions.

Levonorgestrel (LN), 3-Keto-desogestrel (KDG), norethisterone (NET), and gestodene (GST) were investigated in the recirculating rat liver perfusion model. Progestins were dissolved in buffered salt solution (MI), BSA containing (MII) or HSA and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) containing medium (MIII) at a concentration of about 60 ng/ml. Each 3-5 female rat livers were perfused with MI, MII, and MIII for 1 h.

After intravenous administration or nasal feeding of (6, 7-3H)-labelled norethindrone-3-oxime (NETO) or norethindrone (NET) to rhesus monkeys, the serum concentrations were determined by measuring the radioactivity after separation with HPLC. The serum concentrations of total extractable radioactivity were also measured without HPLC separation. In cases of nasal feeding, NETO and NET were quickly absorbed, and almost all of them were eliminated within 24 hours.

After [6,7-3H]-labelled norethisterone-3-oxime (NETO) and norethisterone-3-oxime acetate (NETO-AC) were given intravenously or orally through a nasal tube with 1 mg of respective unlabelled steroid to Rhesus monkey, serum samples were collected at various periods, and radioactivity was counted with or without reverse-phase HPLC separation in advance. Pharmacokinetics of NETO and NETO-AC were compared with those of norethisterone (NET) and norethisterone acetate (NET-AC) respectively which were studied in a similar experimental design. The results indicated that the serum concentration-time curve of NETO and NET could be adequately described by a two-compartment model.

Vocal-control nuclei in hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) were studied by HRP retrograde tracing and electrophysiological methods. Vocal control centres in hawfinch consist of four discrete nuclei. Hyperstriatum ventral, pars caudale (HVc) is the highest nucleus, with its efferent fibers projecting to the rubust nucleus of archistriatum (RA), which in turn projects to the nucleus intercollicularis (ICo) of midbrain and the nucleus intermedius (IM) of medulla oblongata IM innervating vocal organ (syrinx) also receives input from ICo.
