Article Synopsis
  • Developments in bioengineering and nanotechnology are advancing research on biological communication systems, but challenges arise from the delayed arrival of molecules that can distort data signals.
  • Existing models typically overlook the complexities of detecting distorted signals at the receiver, focusing too much on channel characteristics.
  • The paper introduces BioRxToolbox, a framework for designing effective molecular communication systems that uses specific techniques to minimize signal interference and efficiently encode and decode information in biological settings.

Moyamoya angiopathy is a rare cerebrovascular condition characterized by insufficient cerebral blood flow resulting from arterial vessel narrowing or occlusion, potentially leading to cerebral ischemia due to inadequate oxygen and nutrient supply to the brain tissue. The development of collateral vessels in stenotic regions, inherently fragile and prone to rupture, may further precipitate intracerebral hemorrhage. Alongside focal neurological symptoms, the common clinical presentations of Moyamoya angiopathy encompass headaches, dizziness, cognitive impairments, seizures, and involuntary movements.

Introduction: It is aimed to investigate the relationship between the asymptomatic individiuals with elevated HbA1c and occurrence of polyneuropathy by way of comparison to normoglycemic condition.

Methods: The study includes 30 female patients diagnosed with subclinical elevation of HbA1c and 30 normoglycemic healthy female patients who applied to our hospital polyclinics with symptoms other than neuropathy between January-March 2017. Nerve conduction examination is done in these patients, parameters of both groups are compared.

Although it is proved that humans ingest microplastics via food, and microplastics were found in human tissues, blood and feces, there needs to be more data on the properties and health-related effects of plastic particles that interact with food and undergo digestion. This study aimed to examine the impact of a real food matrix, milk, on the behavior and gastrointestinal fate of polystyrene microparticles (PSMP). In the presence of the food matrix, the net negative ζ-potential values of PSMP (diameter size of 1.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the reliability of AI-generated STL files in diagnosing osseous changes of the mandibular condyle and compare them to a ground truth (GT) diagnosis made by six radiologists.

Methods: A total of 432 retrospective CBCT images from four universities were evaluated by six dentomaxillofacial radiologists who identified osseous changes such as flattening, erosion, osteophyte formation, bifid condyle formation, and osteosclerosis. All images were evaluated by each radiologist blindly and recorded on a spreadsheet.

Objective: The present study was aimed at investigating the effects of anti-seizure medications (ASMs), patient demographic characteristics, and the seizure type and frequency on the development of congenital malformations (CMs) in the infants of pregnant women with epilepsy (PWWE).

Methods: PWWE followed up at the neurology outpatient clinic of 21 centers between 2014 and 2019 were included in this prospective study. The follow-up of PWWE was conducted using structured, general pregnant follow-up forms prepared by the Pregnancy and Epilepsy Study Committee.

This study aims to generate and also validate an automatic detection algorithm for pharyngeal airway on CBCT data using an AI software (Diagnocat) which will procure a measurement method. The second aim is to validate the newly developed artificial intelligence system in comparison to commercially available software for 3D CBCT evaluation. A Convolutional Neural Network-based machine learning algorithm was used for the segmentation of the pharyngeal airways in OSA and non-OSA patients.

Background: Autoimmune encephalitis (AIE) and paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS) are both rare groups of neurological diseases that are difficult to diagnose.

Aim: We aimed to determine the common and distinct aspects of these two aetiologies of encephalitis as well as the characteristics of our patient group.

Methods: We respectively analysed the records of the patients including symptoms, demographic features, neurological examination, cranial-magnetic-resonance-imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG) findings, cerebrospinal fluid results (CSF) findings.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between headaches and idiopathic/genetic epilepsy (I/GE) in patients aged 6-40 years, focusing on headache prevalence and characteristics among these individuals.
  • Out of 809 patients, 62.8% reported headaches, with 87.4% experiencing interictal headaches and 41.2% having migraines; the analysis identified distinct clusters based on headache and epilepsy features for both adults and children/adolescents.
  • Two primary clusters emerged: one included patients with a family history of headaches and specific seizure types (like juvenile myoclonic epilepsy), while the other contained patients with different characteristics, including those with self-limited epilepsy and generalized tonic-clonic seizures. *

Background: The incidence of keratinocyte carcinomas is high and rapidly growing. Approximately 80% of keratinocyte carcinomas consist of basal cell carcinomas (BCC) with 50% of these being considered as low-risk tumors. Nevertheless, 83% of the low-risk BCC patients were found to receive more follow-up care than recommended according to the Dutch BCC guideline, which is one visit post-treatment for this group.

Engineering genetic regulatory circuits is key to the creation of biological applications that are responsive to environmental changes. Computational models can assist in understanding especially large and complex circuits for which manual analysis is infeasible, permitting a model-driven design process. However, there are still few tools that offer the ability to simulate the system under design.

People who engineer biological organisms often find it useful to draw diagrams in order to communicate both the structure of the nucleic acid sequences that they are engineering and the functional relationships between sequence features and other molecular species. Some typical practices and conventions have begun to emerge for such diagrams. SBOL Visual aims to organize and systematize such conventions in order to produce a coherent language for expressing the structure and function of genetic designs.

A standardized approach to annotating computational biomedical models and their associated files can facilitate model reuse and reproducibility among research groups, enhance search and retrieval of models and data, and enable semantic comparisons between models. Motivated by these potential benefits and guided by consensus across the COmputational Modeling in BIology NEtwork (COMBINE) community, we have developed a specification for encoding annotations in Open Modeling and EXchange (OMEX)-formatted archives. This document details version 1.

Background: Targeted obesity prevention policies would benefit from the identification of population groups with the highest risk of weight gain. The relative importance of adult age, sex, ethnicity, geographical region, and degree of social deprivation on weight gain is not known. We aimed to identify high-risk groups for changes in weight and BMI using electronic health records (EHR).

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Free Nitrous Acid (FNA) and Free Ammonia (FA) on enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) and in particular on the aerobic phosphorus uptake rate (PUR). To this end, a PAO-enriched biomass was developed at a lab-scale reactor in order to fuel a series of ex-situ batch experiments to test the effect of various nitrite or ammonium concentrations on the phosphorus uptake rate at different pH values. FNA was found to be a strong inhibitor of EBPR, in agreement with other studies with PUR being inhibited by 50 % under 1.

Recent studies with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and the history of silver metal as a broad-spectrum bactericidal and virucidal agent, places silver as one of the future biocidal candidates in the field of nanomedicine to eliminate bacteria and viruses, especially multidrug resistant ones. In this review, we have described the various morphologies of AgNPs and correlated the enhanced bactericidal activity with their prominent {111} facets. In addition to prioritizing the characterization we have also discussed the importance of quantifying AgNPs and silver ion content (Ag) and their different mechanisms at the chemical, biological, pharmacological, and toxicological levels.
