University students blind to group status rated boys with gender identity disorder and clinical control boys regarding their physical attractiveness. Ratings were made of the face and upper torso from photographs taken at the time of clinical assessment (mean age, 8.1 years).

Nevertheless, in about 10% of patients, complete ductal clearance is not possible using standard balloon and basket techniques. A variety of endoscopically guided lithotripsy devices can substantially improve the chances of extracting stones that are resistant to conventional methods.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLaparoscopic cholecystectomy has rapidly become the procedure of choice for most patients with symptomatic gallbladder disease. Laparoscopic surgery, however, has not been a required component of most general surgery training programs. The demonstrated efficacy of laparoscopic surgery dictates that this discipline be rapidly incorporated into residency programs.

Fresh kidney cortical tubular cells (KC), Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK), and dog kidney (6247) (DK) cell lines were used in MLKC reactions, and islets of Langerhans were used in the MLIC as putative antigen presenting cells (APC). The stimulating cells were treated with purified or recombinant dog interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), and the detection of class II MHC molecule expression was assessed by a moneclonal antibody (mAb) (B1F6).

The most important parameter in determining the feasibility of attempting laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the setting of acute inflammation appears to be the experience of the surgeon. This also appears to be true when encountering individuals with elements of long-standing chronic cholecystitis.

Although the indications for operation varied, 90% of patients had evidence of cholelithiasis and biliary colic. Conversion to open cholecystectomy was required in 534 patients (4%); of these, 52% were converted because of acute or chronic inflammation or adhesions.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy can reduce hospital stays and the length of the recovery period, as well as decrease postoperative pain, diminish scarring, and provide significant cost savings.

We report here the cDNA cloning of this region from dog lymphocytes and the cDNA sequence. The predicted amino acid sequence is also reported and compared to the known sequences of these other species.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe rapid and widespread acceptance of laparoscopic cholecystectomy is without precedent in modern surgical history. Within a few years laparoscopic surgery has all but replaced traditional open laparotomy in the management of routine gallbladder disease. Recent reports of laparoscopically performed common-bile-duct exploration, appendectomy, truncal and selective vagotomy, Nissen fundoplication, colonic resection and other innovative procedures support the concept that, by the end of the decade, laparoscopic surgery will become one of the most common techniques used by general surgeons.

Their responses were compared to that of sibling (n = 25), psychiatric (n = 26), and normal (n = 28) controls. Results show that children with gender identity disorder gave significantly more cross-sex responses than same-sex responses, whereas the psychiatric and normal controls gave significantly more same-sex responses than cross-sex responses.

This study used murine-derived anti-OKT3 (Ab2) as a bioreagent to determine whether this Ab2 and polyclonal anti-(anti-OKT3) (Ab3) generated in some human kidney transplant patients are idiotypically connected. Two anti-OKT3 mAbs G-880 (IgG1) and M-12 (IgM) were derived by immunizing BALB/c mice with the OKT3-secreting hybridoma.

The evidence suggests that sexual abuse is an important problem with serious long-term sequelae; but the specific effects of sexual abuse, independent of force, threat of force, or such family variables as parental psychopathology, are still to be clarified. Adult women with a history of childhood sexual abuse show greater evidence of sexual disturbance or dysfunction, homosexual experiences in adolescence or adulthood, depression, and are more likely than nonabused women to be revictimized.

Three hundred forty-one (91%) presented on an elective basis, and the remaining 34 patients (9%) were admitted for acute cholecystitis (24), gallstone pancreatitis (9), and cholangitis (1). Of the 375 patients, 20 were converted to laparotomy and cholecystectomy, for an overall success rate of 95% for patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

This article summarizes the discussions and recommendations of the DSM-IV Subcommittee on Gender Identity Disorders, a subcommittee of the Child Psychiatry Work Group, regarding diagnostic issues. The issues reviewed include placement in the nomenclature, the concept of a spectrum of gender dysphoria rather than discrete levels of symptomatology, criticisms of current diagnostic criteria, subtyping by sexual orientation, and proposed changes in diagnostic criteria for the current DSM-III-R diagnoses of Gender Identity Disorder of Childhood, Transsexualism, and Gender Identity Disorder of Adolescence or Adulthood, Nontranssexual Type.

Mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC) reactivity as well as serological typing for class I histocompatibility antigens were also performed for comparison.

With the exception of sexualized behavior, the majority of short-term effects noted in the literature are symptoms that characterize child clinical samples in general. Among adolescents, commonly reported sequelae include sexual dissatisfaction, promiscuity, homosexuality, and an increased risk for revictimization.
