Diagnostic implication of a circulating serum-based three-microRNA signature in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Owing to the diagnostic dilemma, the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains impoverished, contributing to the globally high mortality rate. Currently, HCC diagnosis depends on the combination of imaging modalities and the measurement of serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels. Nevertheless, these conventional modalities exhibit poor performance in detecting HCC at early stages.

Merkel Cell Carcinoma: From Pathobiology to Clinical Management.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an infrequent, rapidly growing skin neoplasm that carries a greater probability of regional lymph node involvement, and a grim prognosis in advanced cases. While it is seen predominantly in old age in sun-exposed body parts, the prevalence varies among different races and geographical regions. Merkel cell polyomavirus and UV radiation-induced mutations contribute to its etiopathogenesis.

Human Fascioliasis: Report of Two Cases from Kashmir Valley.

Although few case reports of human fascioliasis have been reported from different parts of India, there is no case reported from the Kashmir valley to date. Herein we report two cases of human fascioliasis. Both patients presented with fever, marked eosinophilia, and liver lesions on imaging.

Diffusion-Weighted Imaging: An Exciting and Problem-Solving Tool in Patients with Hepatic Metastases.

 The diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is based on the random Brownian motion of water molecules that influences image contrast depending on different pathological conditions.  The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of various magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences including diffusion-weighted and gadobenate-enhanced MRI in the detection and characterization of liver lesions in a patient of known primary malignancy and to compare MRI with contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and ultrasonography (USG) in the detection of liver metastases.  All patients underwent a multiphase MRI.

Antibiotic resistance in : A mutational analysis from a tertiary care hospital in Kashmir, India.

Background: Helicobacter pylori infection is recognised as type 1 carcinogen by the International Agency of Research on Cancer. Previous studies in our hospital have revealed high prevalence of H. pylori in our population with a high recurrence rate after completion of treatment.

Follicular thyroid carcinoma presenting as solitary liver metastasis: a case report.

Background: Distant metastasis from differentiated thyroid carcinoma at presentation is rare and isolated liver metastasis on presentation is almost unknown. We report a case of primary follicular carcinoma of the thyroid with isolated liver metastasis at presentation.

Case Presentation: A 65-year-old man of Kashmiri origin presented to our tertiary referral center with obstructive jaundice; he was evaluated with magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography and positron emission tomography-computed tomography.

Protein expression and methylation of MGMT, a DNA repair gene and their correlation with clinicopathological parameters in invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast.

Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation are being increasingly recognized to play an important role in cancer and may serve as a cancer biomarker. The aim of this study was to evaluate the promoter methylation status of MGMT (O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase) and a possible correlation with the expression of MGMT and standard clinicopathological parameters in invasive ductal breast carcinoma patients (IDC) of Kashmir. Methylation-specific PCR was carried out to investigate the promoter methylation status of MGMT in breast tumors paired with the corresponding normal tissue samples from 128 breast cancer patients.

Loss of expression and aberrant methylation of the CDH1 (E-cadherin) gene in breast cancer patients from Kashmir.

Background: Aberrant promoter hypermethylation has been recognized in human breast carcinogenesis as a frequent molecular alteration associated with the loss of expression of a number of key regulatory genes and may serve as a biomarker. The E-cadherin gene (CDH1), mapping at chromosome 16q22, is an intercellular adhesion molecule in epithelial cells, which plays an important role in establishing and maintaining intercellular connections. The aim of our study was to assess the methylation pattern of CDH1 and to correlate it with the expression of E-cadherin, clinicopathological parameters and hormone receptor status in breast cancer patients of Kashmir.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia presenting as a breast lump: A report of two cases.

Extra-medullary leukemic infiltration of the breast by acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is very rare. We report two cases of ALL presenting as breast masses and diagnosed on fine-needle aspiration (FNA). Our first patient, a post-partum 30-year-old female, developed bilateral breast lumps in her last trimester of pregnancy and complained of easy fatigability.
