This paper introduces a new plenoptic 3D particle tracking velocimetry (3D-PTV) technique called raw-image ray-bundling (RIRB), which combines the 3D clustering algorithm of light-field ray-bundling (LFRB) with the raw image segmentation concept of epipolar triangular connectivity (ETC). The combined approach provides flexibility towards accommodating both unfocused and focused plenoptic cameras. Additionally, the RIRB algorithm bypasses the computational step of perspective-view generation in LFRB, thereby allowing lower specification microlens arrays (MLA) to be used without excessive loss of measurement resolution.

Contact and inhalation of virions-carrying human aerosols represent the primary transmission pathway for airborne diseases including the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Relative to sneezing and coughing, non-symptomatic aerosol-producing activities such as speaking are highly understudied. The dispersions of aerosols from vocalization by a human subject are hereby quantified using high-speed particle image velocimetry.

This paper describes the development of a Modular Plenoptic Adaptor (MPA) for rapid and reversible conversion of high-speed cameras into plenoptic imaging systems, with the primary goal of enabling single-camera, time-resolved 3D flow-measurements. The MPA consists of a regular imaging lens, a microlens array, a tilt-adjustable microlens mount and an optical relay, which are collectively installed onto a high-speed camera through a standard lens mount. Each component within the system is swappable to optimize for specific imaging applications.
