Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is characterized by the accumulation of triglycerides within hepatocytes, which can progress to more severe conditions, such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), which may include progressive fibrosis, leading to cirrhosis, cancer, and death. This goal of this review is to highlight recent research showing the potential of mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) in reducing the key pathogenic pathways of MASLD or MASH. We introduced a two-dimensional vector-bending sensor using excessively tilted fiber grating (ExTFG) encapsulated in a non-neutral axis position within a flexible cylinder. The asymmetrical structure enabled both TM and TE modes of the ExTFG to achieve the competency of one-dimensional vector bending sensing by cleverly leveraging the orthogonal relationship between these modes to achieve the effect of orthogonal cascading of two one-dimensional sensors. The resonance wavelength changes of the TM and TE modes were monitored under equal excitation states to achieve two-dimensional vector bending sensing, which significantly simplified the manufacturing complexity of the sensor; the longer the off-axis distance, the higher the sensitivity, and the smaller the maximum measurable curvature.

Variation in the non-coding genome represents an understudied mechanism of disease and it remains challenging to predict if single nucleotide variants, small insertions and deletions, or structural variants in non-coding genomic regions will be detrimental. Our approach using complementary RNA-seq and targeted long-read DNA sequencing can prioritize identification of non-coding variants that lead to disease via alteration of gene splicing or expression. We have identified a patient with primary ciliary dyskinesia with a pathogenic coding variant on one allele of the SPAG1 gene, while the second allele appears normal by whole exome sequencing despite an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern.

Motivation: Allele-specific expression (ASE) analyses aim to detect imbalanced expression of maternal versus paternal copies of an autosomal gene. Such allelic imbalance can result from a variety of cis-acting causes, including disruptive mutations within one copy of a gene that impact the stability of transcripts, as well as regulatory variants outside the gene that impact transcription initiation. Current methods for ASE estimation suffer from a number of shortcomings, such as relying on only one variant within a gene, assuming perfect phasing information across multiple variants within a gene, or failing to account for alignment biases and possible genotyping errors.

This review highlighted the pivotal role of zyxin, an essential cell focal adhesions protein, in cellular biology and various diseases. Zyxin can orchestrate the restructuring and dynamic alterations of the cellular cytoskeleton, which is involved in cell proliferation, adhesion, motility, and gene transcription. Novel components in the noncanonical Hippo pathway that mediate the growth, metastasis, and drug resistance of breast cancer (BC) cells need to be identified. Here, we showed that expression of SAM and SH3 domain-containing protein 1 (SASH1) is negatively correlated with expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase kinase 4 (MAP4K4) in a subpopulation of patients with luminal-subtype BC. Downregulated SASH1 and upregulated MAP4K4 synergistically regulated the proliferation, migration, and invasion of luminal-subtype BC cells.

This work proposes a highly sensitive sandwich heterostructure multimode optical fiber microbend sensor for heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and ballistocardiography (BCG) monitoring, which is fabricated by combining a sandwich heterostructure multimode fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (SHMF-MZI) with a microbend deformer. The parameters of the SHMF-MZI sensor and the microbend deformer were analyzed and optimized in detail, and then the new encapsulated method of the wearable device was put forward. The proposed wearable sensor could greatly enhance the response to the HR signal.

Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid potassium salt (PFOS) residues in ecosystems over long periods are of increasing concern and require a selective and stable optical probe for monitoring. Herein, two functional groups (-F and -NH) with opposite electronic modulation ability were introduced into Fe/Zn-BDC (denoted as Fe/Zn-BDC-F and Fe/Zn-BDC-NH, respectively) to tailor the coordination environment of the Fe metal center, further regulating the nanozyme activity efficiently. Notably, the peroxidase-like activity is related to the coordination environment of the nanozymes and obeys the following order Fe/Zn-BDC-F > Fe/Zn-BDC > Fe/Zn-BDC-NH.

Here, we proposed a selective fluorescent sensor for Cr(VI) detection using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) modified N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs-CTAC) synthesized a post-modification strategy.
