Introduction: A comprehensive assessment of congestion, including circulating biomarkers, is recommended in patients with acute heart failure. The circulating biomarkers natriuretic peptides (NPs) and carbohydrate antigen-125 (CA125) could be useful for congestion assessment in ambulatory chronic heart failure (CHF), but there is only limited information about their applicability in this context. Methods: We conducted an observational, prospective, multicenter study of patients with AHF who underwent a furosemide stress test.
Aims: To evaluate the feasibility of a transthoracic echocardiogram using an apical-subcostal protocol in invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) and prone position.
Methods: Prospective study of adults who required a prone position during IMV. A pillow was placed only under the left hemithorax in the prone position to elevate and ease the apical and subcostal windows.
Background: The coexistence of heart and kidney diseases, also called cardiorenal syndrome, is very common, leads to increased morbidity and mortality, and poses diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties. There is a risk-treatment paradox, such that patients with the highest risk are treated with lesser disease-modifying medical therapies.
Summary: In this document, different scientific societies propose a practical approach to address and optimize cardiorenal therapies and related comorbidities systematically in chronic cardiorenal disease beyond congestion.
Introduction And Objectives: Repetitive ambulatory doses of levosimendan are an option as a bridge to heart transplantation (HT), but evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of this treatment is scarce. Introduction And Objectives: Dyspnea is the most common symptom among hospitalized patients with heart failure (HF) but besides dyspnea questionnaires (which reflect the subjective patient sensation and are not fully validated in HF) there are no measurable physiological variables providing objective assessment of dyspnea in a setting of acute HF patients. Studies performed in respiratory patients suggest that the measurement of electromyographic (EMG) activity of the respiratory muscles with surface electrodes correlates well with dyspnea. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that respiratory muscles EMG activity is a potential marker of dyspnea severity in acute HF patients.
