Since 2011, massive strandings of Sargassum (brown alga) have significantly affected Caribbean islands causing major health, environmental and economic problems. Amongst them, the degradation of algae releases corrosive gases, hydrogen sulphide (HS) and ammonia (NH) which causes an accelerated corrosion of the metallic structures of these coastal areas. The aim of this study was to quantify the impact of Sargassum strandings on the corrosion of three types of steels (DC01 carbon steel, 304L and 316L stainless steels) immersed for up to 120 days at various sites in Martinique which were gradually impacted by Sargassum.

Background: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major global public health problem with devastating consequences, such as hepatocellular carcinoma. Currently, approved treatments are limited to interferon and nucleoside/nucleotide analogues for chronic hepatitis B and chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery for cancer. Both treatments have their limitations, making complete cure an elusive goal.

However, the fitness-resistance trade-off may result in their elimination. Chromosomal integration of ARGs preserves resistance advantage while relieving the selective pressure for keeping costly plasmids.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOsmotic dehydration (OD) is an efficient preservation technology in that water is removed by immersing the food in a solution with a higher concentration of solutes. The application of OD in food processing offers more benefits than conventional drying technologies. Notably, OD can effectively remove a significant amount of water without a phase change, which reduces the energy demand associated with latent heat and high temperatures.

The aim of this interdisciplinary study was to understand the links between family farming (produced, exchanged, sold, and consumed food), diet (focused on produced, hunted, and caught food), physical activity (sedentary, light, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity) and obesity in Melanesian Lifou Island families (parents and children). Forty families, including 142 adults and children, completed individual food frequency questionnaires, wore tri-axial accelerometers for seven continuous days, and had weight and height measured with a bio-impedance device.

The model incorporates within-host dynamics, used to describe the interaction between the pathogen, the immune system and the waning of immunity. Individuals infected with a low dose acquire a low immunity level and those infected with a high dose acquire a high level of immunity.

In this present study, pretreatments of freeze-thawing (freezing at -36 °C for 2 weeks and thawing at 4 °C for 24 h) and pulsed electric field (1 kV/cm, 10 and 30 pulse numbers), were applied to mango 1 cm-thickness slices prior to osmotic dehydration conducted at 40 °C for 4 h. Three different 60 °Brix agave syrup solutions with or without added polysaccharides (inulin or xanthan gum) were used in the osmotic dehydration operation.

We formulate a model for which susceptible individuals can contract the disease in two ways: (i) direct mode caused by contact with infected individuals; (ii) indirect mode due to the presence of pathogenic agents in the water. We obtain an age-structured model which combines both age since infection and age since recovery.

This model takes into account two routes of transmission: vertical and horizontal. This latter route integrates both the direct and indirect transmission.

In this paper, we propose a mathematical model which allows us to investigate and analyse this problem. We show by means of the reproductive number, ${\cal R}_0$ that the containment measures appear to have slowed the growth of the outbreak. Nevertheless, these measures remain only effective as long as a very large fraction of population, p, greater than the critical value $1-1/{\cal R}_0$ remains confined.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 312 rural and 104 urban adolescents (11-16 years old) was conducted. Food intakes were assessed by a 26-item food frequency questionnaire and then categorised into the number of serves from each of the three recommended Pacific food groups (energy foods, protective foods, bodybuilding foods), with two additional categories for foods and drinks to be avoided i.
Purpose: The goal of our study is to highlight, through a series of 4 cases, the importance of retinal fluorescein angiography in monitoring the retinal periphery in retinal vein occlusions, particularly in cases of recurrent macular edema.
Observations: This is a series of 4 patients aged between 50 and 90 years with ischemic central retinal vein occlusions in 2 cases and branch retinal venous occlusions in 2 cases. Fluorescein angiography was performed in two of our patients, and optical coherent tomography in all cases, showing cystoid macular edema with an average macular thickness of 439μm.
Cell transplantation has been challenged in several clinical indications of genetic or acquired muscular diseases, but therapeutic success were mitigated. To understand and improve the yields of tissue regeneration, we aimed at modelling the fate of CD56-positive human myoblasts after transplantation. Using immunodeficient severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice as recipients, we assessed the survival, integration and satellite cell niche occupancy of human myoblasts by a triple immunohistochemical labelling of laminin, dystrophin and human lamin A/C.

An important factor of weight gain or loss is body size satisfaction; however, little is known about adolescent body self-perception in the Pacific region. Body dissatisfaction was evaluated using the Stunkard Figure Rating Scale in a sample of 699 adolescents from rural and urban areas of New Caledonia.

In 2013, body weight, height, skinfold thickness, lean body mass (LBM), percentage fat body mass (%FBM), physical fitness (power, agility, speed, maximal aerobic speed [MAS], estimated VO), and self-reported physical activity were assessed. Rural adolescents were significantly shorter and faster, had lower weight, %FBM, LBM, and power output and similar MAS and VO, and were more active than urban adolescents.

Assuming that cells continually encounter each other, and from some hypotheses on cell-to-cell rules of transfer, we derive discrete and continuous Boltzmann-like integro-differential equations. The novelty of this model is to take into account multiple transfer rules.
