Background: Limited research has been conducted to investigate the impact of secondary mitral regurgitation (MR) in heart failure (HF) patients with different levels of estimated pulmonary artery systolic pressure (ePASP).

Methods: A total of 468 patients suffering from HF and secondary MR were enrolled and categorized into non-severe and severe MR groups based on the degree of MR. The primary endpoint of the study was a composite of cardiovascular death and a first-heart-failure hospitalization.

Background: Macrophage infiltration and polarization are integral to the progression of heart failure and cardiac fibrosis after ischemia/reperfusion (IR). Interleukin 34 (IL-34) is an inflammatory regulator related to a series of autoimmune diseases. Whether IL-34 mediates inflammatory responses and contributes to cardiac remodeling and heart failure post-IR remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • After a heart attack, the heart can get damaged, leading to heart failure.
  • PFKFB3 is an enzyme that helps manage sugar in the body and is involved in heart problems, but its role after a heart attack was not clear.
  • A study showed that blocking PFKFB3 with a special treatment called 3PO helped improve heart function and reduce damage in mice after a heart attack.

Femtosecond laser (fs-laser) is a novel tooth preparation tool but its ablation efficiency is insufficient. The purpose is to establish a new fs-laser tooth ablation method based on a dual-wedges path ablation system, and explore the efficiency of tooth hard tissue and dental restorative materials ablation. Extracted third molars, pure titanium, cobalt-chromium alloy, gold alloy, and 3Y-zirconia were prepared into samples.

TiAl alloys have excellent high-temperature performance and are potentially used in the aerospace industry. By controlling the lamellar orientation through directional solidification (DS) technology, the plasticity and strength of TiAl alloy at room temperature and high temperatures can be effectively improved. However, various difficulties lie in ensuring the lamellar orientation is parallel to the growth direction.

Background: The development of nursing interns' fundamental competencies should be a top focus because they represent an essential reserve for nursing professionals. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between spiritual care-giving competency (SCG) and nursing core competencies (NCC) among Chinese nursing interns, adopting a competency-based education (CBE) perspective, additionally, the study aims to examine how emotional intelligence (EI) serves as a mediator in this relationship.

Methods: A nationwide online survey was completed by 1811 Chinese nursing interns at vocational colleges between June and July 2022 as part of a multi-site, cross-sectional, web-based study.

An in-depth insight into the effect of nitrogen substitution on structural stabilization is important for the design of new spinel-type oxynitride materials with tailored properties. In this work, the crystal structures of ordered and disordered LiAlO obtained by slow cooling and rapid quenching, respectively, were analyzed by a X-ray diffraction (XRD) Rietveld refinement and OccQP program. The variation in the bonding state of atoms in the two compounds was explored by the bond valence model, which revealed that the instability of spinel-type LiAlO crystal structure at room temperature is mainly due to the severe under-bonding of the tetrahedrally coordinated Al cations.

Background And Aims: Intestinal flora metabolites are associated with cardiovascular (CV) diseases including heart failure (HF). The carnitine precursor trimethyllysine (TML), which participates in the generation of the atherogenic-related metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), was found to be related to poor prognosis in patients with CV diseases. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between TML and stable chronic HF.

Aims: To explore the associations between serum phenylacetylglutamine (PAGln) and chronic heart failure (HF).

Methods And Results: Totally 956 subjects were enrolled consecutively from the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Ruijin Hospital. Baseline data were obtained from all participants, and 471 stable chronic HF subjects were followed up.

Femtosecond laser (fs-laser) is a novel tooth preparation tool. After cavities were prepared by fs-laser, their axial-wall taper is closely related to the retention force and success of restorations, while the taper after preparation by fs-laser is not clear yet. This study aimed to explore the value of the taper after fs-laser tooth preparation and the effect of laser fluence, scanning line spacing, and scanning layers on taper.

Herein, a feasible strategy based on a femtosecond laser (fs-laser) was provided to decelerate dentin wear, and the effect of wear resistance improvement and its potential mechanism were explored. Tooth wear is a common phenomenon that exists throughout life. While once dentin is exposed, it wears away very quickly.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has become one of the most common causes of disability. It is thus important to identify ACS early in the disease course of patients using novel biomarkers for prompt management. Decorin (DCN) was well-acknowledged for its effect on collagen fibrillogenesis and maintaining tissue integrity.

The extent to which, and mechanisms by which, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate endophytes (DSE) purify wetlands polluted by metallic nanoparticles (metallic NPs) are not well understood. In this study, micro-vertical flow constructed wetlands (MVFCWs) with the Phragmites australis (reeds)-AMF/DSE symbiont were used to treat CuO nanoparticles (CuO-NPs)-polluted wastewater. The results showed that (1) the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and CuO-NPs in three inoculated groups significantly exceeded those in the control check (CK) groups by 28.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a common valvular heart disease, which can be classified into primary and secondary, according to the cause. Primary mitral regurgitation (PMR) is caused by rheumatic fever, degenerative changes, valve prolapse, etc. The appearance of clinical symptoms has always been the best indicator of surgical intervention in patients with severe PMR, but for asymptomatic patients, the best treatment has been controversial.

The deep understanding of the crystal structure and composition-structure relationship is important for modifying and designing solids to obtain functional materials with customized properties. However, because of multiple compositions and complex structures in some spinel solid solutions, the composition-structure relationship is unknown, or becomes very complicated and difficult to be controlled. In this work, the solid-state magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) technique and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) Rietveld refinement were combined to characterize the crystal structure of quaternary disordered MgAlON solid solutions in detail, which was supported by the first-principles density functional theory calculations.

TiO nanoparticles (TiONPs) is one of the most widely used nanomaterials. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are an important and widely distributed group of soil microorganisms, which promote the absorption of nutrients by host plants and increase their tolerance to contaminants. However, the effects and mechanisms of AMF on plant TiONPs tolerance in wetland habitats are not clear.

To compare water purification of common aquatic plants in wetland ecosystem, four common aquatic plant species (Eichhornia crassipes, Nymphaea tetragona, Acorus calamus and Phragmites australis) were used as study species. The effect of aquatic plants on the change of sewage ammonium nitrogen, COD, TP content during different experimental time (1-5 d) with the presence of iron-carbon interior electrolytic substrates were analyzed in small scale experimental apparatus. The results showed that single and combined aquatic plants could effectively remove ammonium nitrogen, COD, TP from the sewage compared with the no-plant control group, but the efficiencies were significantly different among the different species.
