Background: Several large dialysis organizations have lowered the dialysate sodium concentration (DNa) in an effort to ameliorate hypervolemia. The implications of lower DNa on intra-dialytic hypotension (IDH) during hospitalizations of hemodialysis (HD) patients is unclear.

Methods: In this double-blind, single center, randomized controlled trial (RCT), hospitalized maintenance HD patients were randomized to receive higher (142 mmol/L) or lower (138 mmol/L) DNa for up to six sessions.

Background And Objectives: Biomarkers for noninvasive assessment of histopathology and prognosis are needed in patients with kidney disease.

Design, Setting, Participants, & Measurements: Using a proteomics assay, we measured a multimarker panel of 225 circulating plasma proteins in a prospective cohort study of 549 individuals with biopsy-confirmed kidney diseases and semiquantitative assessment of histopathology. We tested the associations of each biomarker with histopathologic lesions and the risks of kidney disease progression (defined as ≥40% decline in eGFR or initiation of KRT) and death.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates 2,215 adults with confirmed COVID-19 who were admitted to ICUs in 65 US hospitals during the early pandemic to understand patient characteristics and mortality rates.
  • The primary outcome evaluated was 28-day in-hospital mortality, with results showing that 35.4% of patients died within this period, while factors such as age, sex, obesity, and specific medical conditions significantly influenced the likelihood of death.
  • Findings suggest a need for awareness of varying treatment approaches across hospitals and highlight critical patient factors linked to higher mortality, prompting further research to improve outcomes for COVID-19 patients.

Background: The major risk of kidney biopsy is severe bleeding. Numerous risk factors for bleeding after biopsy have been reported, but findings have been inconsistent.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of adult patients enrolled in a native kidney biopsy cohort study to identify major bleeding events (red blood cell [RBC] transfusions, invasive procedures, kidney loss, or death).

Background: Despite increasing recognition of the importance of immune checkpoint inhibitor-associated AKI, data on this complication of immunotherapy are sparse.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter study of 138 patients with immune checkpoint inhibitor-associated AKI, defined as a ≥2-fold increase in serum creatinine or new dialysis requirement directly attributed to an immune checkpoint inhibitor. We also collected data on 276 control patients who received these drugs but did not develop AKI.
