Hybrid revascularization using percutaneous coronary intervention and robotically assisted minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass surgery.

Hybrid revascularization (HR) combines staged percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) on stenoses in the non-left anterior descending (LAD) territories with minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) using the left internal thoracic artery (LITA) to the LAD. The LITA-to-LAD graft, which has a 5-year patency rate of 95%, is the major determinant of the long-term survival for patients. Thus, HR aims to perform full revascularization without compromising the survival advantage of the LITA-to-LAD graft, while preserving the minimally invasive advantages associated with the percutaneous treatment of symptomatic coronary stenoses.

Hormonal cryptorchidism therapy: systematic review with metanalysis of randomized clinical trials.

The importance of cryptorchidism treatment concerns the possibility of diminishing risk of malignant degeneration and improving fertility. Success rates of hormonal treatment vary: 0-55% with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and 9-78% with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Due to uncertainties regarding the effectiveness of this treatment, a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on hormonal cryptorchidism treatment was done using the methodology of Cochrane Collaboration.

Treatment of coronary aneurysm in acute myocardial infarction with AngioJet thrombectomy and JoStent coronary stent graft.

A 54-year-old male with a history of coronary artery disease with a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and stenting presented to the emergency with an acute myocardial infarction. The patient underwent angiography which showed in-stent thrombosis of the right coronary artery along with 2 aneurysms proximal to the lesion. The right coronary artery was treated with AngioJet rheolytic thrombectomy and the JoStent coronary stent graft.

Changes in volume reverberation from deep to shallow water in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Scattering from fish is a primary cause of volume reverberation and, since fish populations change from deep to shallow water, the character of volume reverberation should also change. However, there are few data available to document expected changes. Therefore, an experiment was conducted in the eastern Gulf of Mexico to investigate possible changes in volume reverberation from deep to slope to shelf waters.

pH dependence of uranyl retention in a quartz/solution system: an XPS study.

We have investigated the pH dependence of U(VI) retention in quartz/10(-4) M uranyl solution systems, under conditions favoring formation of polynuclear aqueous species and of colloids of amorphous schoepite as U(VI) solubility-limiting phases. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to gain insights into the coordination environments of sorbed/precipitated uranyl ions in the centrifuged quartz samples. The U4f XPS spectra made it possible to identify unambiguously the presence of two uranyl components.

Regulated expression of MUC1 epithelial antigen in erythropoiesis.

MUC1 is a large surface glycoprotein expressed by epithelial cells, which is overexpressed and aberrantly glycosylated in carcinomas. MUC1 is involved in epithelial cell interactions and appears to function as a signal-transducing molecule. The finding that MUC1 can also be expressed in the haematopoietic lineages prompted us to further investigate the possible function(s) of this molecule in haematopoietic cells.

CoMFA analysis of the human beta(1)-adrenoceptor binding affinity of a series of phenoxypropanolamines.

A series of 36 phenoxypropanolamines was examined to determine the structure--activity relationships of beta-adrenoceptor (beta-AR) antagonists for the human beta(1)-AR. The binding affinities of all the compounds were determined for human beta(1)-ARs expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells and the antagonist potency for rat atrial beta(1)-ARs was determined for 32 of these compounds for comparative purposes. The compounds, based upon a phenoxypropanolamine core structure with various meta-, ortho-, para- and amine-substituents, displayed binding affinities (pK(i)) for the human beta(1)-AR ranging from 5.

[Epidemiology and physiopathology of urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy].

Beginning in the 1980s, a series of anatomical discoveries were introduced to modify the classic retropubic radical prostatectomy proposed by Millin in 1942 in an effort to reduce intra and postoperative complications such as intraoperative bleeding and postoperative erectile dysfunction and incontinence. Urinary incontinence post retropubic "anatomical" radical prostatectomy remains a distressing problem for the patient and the physician rating from 6 to 20% even in the hands of experienced surgeons from high volume Academic Centers. The reason for the discrepancy in results is unclear and should be searched in surgical experience of the surgeon, volume of surgical activity of the Center, and selection of the patients undergoing the radical retropubic procedure.

Climatic effects on Salmonella survival in plant and soil irrigated with artificially inoculated wastewater: preliminary results.

The use of wastewater to replace other water resources for irrigation is highly dependent on whether the health risk and environmental impacts entailed are acceptable or not. Total count and species of microorganisms found in wastewater vary widely because of climatic conditions, season, population sanitary habits and disease incidence. Salmonella, one of the genera associated with waterborne diseases, lives in the intestine.

Analysis of sealing vs tensile bond strength of eight adhesive restorative material systems.

Purpose: Using a simulated perfusion system, the intent was to determine: 1) the sealing ability of eight restorative materials (five composite resins and three compomers) used together with their corresponding dentin bonding systems, 2) their tensile bond strength, and 3) the correlation (if any) between both parameters.

Materials And Methods: Permeability in crown segments from sound human third molars (n = 140) subjected to simulated perfusion (32 cm of distilled water) was measured before and after restoring with each material, and the percentage of decrease in permeability (PPD) was recorded. Specimens were later subjected to tensile tests to determine the tensile bond strength (TBS) of the interface.

Role of beta-adrenergic receptor subtypes in lipolysis.

In vitro lipolysis stimulated by low (-)-isoprenaline concentrations (< or =30 nM) in epididymal white adipocytes from Sprague-Dawley rats was inhibited at least 60-80% by the specific beta1-antagonists LK 204-545 and CGP 20712A (1 microM), suggesting that at these low (10 nM) concentrations of (-)-isoprenaline lipolysis was primarily (80%) but not solely mediated via beta1-adrenergic receptors. Low concentrations (100 nM) of (-)-noradrenaline and formoterol also confirmed a role for beta1-adrenergic receptors in mediating lipolysis at low concentrations of these agonists. At higher agonist concentrations, beta3-adrenergic receptors were fully activated and were the dominant beta-adrenergic receptor subtype mediating the maximum lipolytic response, and the maximum response was not affected by the beta1-antagonists, demonstrating that the beta3-receptor is capable of inducing maximum lipolysis on its own.
