Composite polymers are promising solution to structural setbacks of starch and alginate-based films due to their hydrophilic attributes. Hence, this study aimed to investigate young coconut jelly powder (CJP), an under-utilized by-waste, as a filler using the casting method to develop a novel biocomposite from increments of CJP (1-3 %) to a blended resin of arrowroot starch, sodium alginate, and glycerol. Moreover, the films were characterized by physicomechanical (visual aspect, thickness, color, moisture content, tensile strength, and elongation at break); surface microstructure; water barrier (water vapor permeability, water solubility, and water activities); thermal, crystallinity, and functional group properties; soil, river water, and seawater biodegradability; and coating application in cherry tomato.

Meta-analysis of predictors of healthcare-associated infection.

Our systematic review and meta-analysis of 40 studies ( = 3,905,559) identified gastric acid suppressants, recent hospitalization, antibiotic exposure, and certain comorbidities as independent predictors of healthcare-associated infection (HA-CDI) among adult inpatients. Targeted antibiotic stewardship and judicious use of gastric acid suppressants can reduce the incidence of HA-CDI.

Reflective signatures of unresolved objects.

We present a method for identifying, classifying, and distinguishing unresolved reflective objects. A forward model is developed to predict how the radiance field from a specular surface will be angularly distributed and how samples detected from that field can be used to infer surface profile characteristics. We present lab studies to validate the forward model and demonstrate unresolved object identification and classification.

The majority of tumor comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) currently does not include a matched normal control. The use of a tumor-only CGP approach needs the development of a strategy to refine germline pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants (gP/LPVs) calls, so as to limit the performance of unnecessary germline reflex tests and instead successfully identify patients who are carriers of likely gP/LPVs. Guidelines have been developed for the identification of gP/LPVs in BRCA1/2 genes on the basis of tumor-only CGP results and for the evaluation of the appropriateness of performing germline reflex BRCA1/2 testing.
