Background/objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between CRF (cardiorespiratory fitness) and body composition, specifically obesity indicators, in a sample of schoolchildren from the continental and Adriatic regions of the Republic of Croatia. Given that Croatia ranks among the leading countries in Europe in terms of obesity, it is believed that there is a need to combat this condition starting from school age. The usefulness of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) lies in the fact that it is one of the indicators of children's overall health and is considered a measure of general health status.

In addition, we monitored the leachate quality of the amended BR under progressive leaching that simulated precipitation conditions in Northern Brazil. Free-draining column tests consisting of BR amended with gypsum and organic waste, at 5% and 10% w/w, respectively, were leached for 8 weeks to assess the effects on the chemical composition of BR and the leachates.

The main aim was to test slag waste and iron-rich charred fossil coal ("Fe-char"), as sorbents for per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs), as well as lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb), in four soils from a firefighting training area (PFASs) and a shooting range (Pb and Sb). Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is used for selective molecular probing of the cell membrane of living fibroblast cells grown adherently on gold nanoisland substrates across their whole contact areas with the substrate, enabling mapping of the membrane's composition and interaction. From the SERS data, the localization and distribution of different lipids and their interactions, together with proteins in the outer cell membrane, are inferred.

Objectives: We developed a brain-computer interface-triggered functional electrical stimulation therapy (BCI-FEST) system for clinical application and conducted an interventional study to (1) assess its feasibility and (2) understand its potential clinical efficacy for the rehabilitation of reaching and grasping in individuals with sub-acute spinal cord injury (SCI).

Understanding the formation of the intracellular protein corona of nanoparticles is essential for a wide range of bio- and nanomedical applications. The innermost layer of the protein corona, the hard corona, directly interacts with the nanoparticle surface, and by shielding the surface, it has a deterministic effect on the intracellular processing of the nanoparticle. Here, we combine a direct qualitative analysis of the hard corona composition of gold nanoparticles with a detailed structural characterization of the molecules in their interaction with the nanoparticle surface and relate both to the effects they have on the ultrastructure of living cells and the processing of the gold nanoparticles.

Here, gold nanoparticles, acting as nanosensors that deliver surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra from living cells provide molecular evidence of lipid accumulation in lysosomes after treatment of cultured cells with the three tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) desipramine, amitryptiline, and imipramine. The vibrational spectra elucidate to great detail and with very high sensitivity the composition of the drug-induced lipid accumulations, also observed in fixed samples by electron microscopy and X-ray nanotomography.

Here, we present direct, label-free characterization of liposome structure and composition at the site of its interaction with citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Evidenced by the vibrational spectra and cryo-EM, the gold nanoparticles destroy the bilayer structure of interacting liposomes in the presence of a high amount of citrate, while at lower citrate concentration the nanoparticles interact with the surface of the intact liposomes.

Its advantages over one-photon excited surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) include complementary vibrational information resulting from different selection rules, probing of very small focal volumes, and beneficial excitation with long wavelengths. Our aim was to investigate right ventricular (RV) and right atrial (RA) function and deformation as evaluated by 3-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) and speckle-tracking 2-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) in these individuals.
Methods: We included 39 untreated women with endogenous subclinical hyperthyroidism and 39 healthy women matched by age.
We sought to investigate the relationship between blood pressure (BP) variability and left atrial (LA) phasic function assessed by volumetric and speckle tracking method in normal-weight, overweight and obese hypertensive patients. This cross-sectional study included 164 untreated hypertensive subjects who underwent a 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring and complete two-dimensional echocardiographic examination (2DE). All the patients were separated into three groups according to their body mass index (BMI): normal-weight patients (BMI < 25 kg/m(2)), overweight patients (25 ≤ BMI < 30 kg/m(2)), and obese patients (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m(2)).
