Allogeneic stem-cell transplantation of renal cell cancer after nonmyeloablative chemotherapy: feasibility, engraftment, and clinical results.

Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of nonmyeloablative allogeneic stem-cell transplantation in patients with metastatic renal cell cancer (RCC) and to evaluate efficacy with respect to engraftment and tumor regression.

Patients And Methods: Between February 1999 and June 2001, patients with refractory, metastatic RCC were screened for enrollment. A fludarabine and cyclophosphamide-based conditioning regimen was used.

AAMFT Master Series tapes: an analysis of the inclusion of feminist principles into family therapy practice.

Content analysis of 23 American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Master Series tapes was used to determine how well feminist behaviors have been incorporated into "ideal" family therapy practice. Feminist behaviors were infrequent, being evident in fewer than 3% of time blocks in event sampling and 10 of 39 feminist behaviors of the Feminist Family Therapist Behavior Checklist. These eminent therapists most often dealt with empowerment of male clients and management of power differentials in the therapeutic relationship in a relatively feminist manner, but they tended to hold women responsible for family issues, endorsed traditional rather than egalitarian relationships, and overlooked how the social context affects families.

Ten adaptive strategies for family and work balance: advice from successful families.

Despite negative media images and social dynamics insensitive to the lives of many dual-career couples, research shows that these families are largely healthy and thriving. In this study, we investigated the adaptive strategies of middle-class, dual-earner couples (N = 47) with children that are successfully managing family and work. Guided by grounded-theory methodology, analysis of interview data revealed that these successful couples structured their lives around 10 major strategies: Valuing family, striving for partnership, deriving meaning from work, maintaining work boundaries, focusing and producing at work, taking pride in dual earning, prioritizing family fun, living simply, making decisions proactively, and valuing time.

Plasmin induces local thrombolysis without causing hemorrhage: a comparison with tissue plasminogen activator in the rabbit.

The direct fibrinolytic enzyme, plasmin, was compared with tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) in rabbit models of local thrombolysis and fibrinolytic hemorrhage. Plasmin was produced by solid-phase urokinase activation of plasminogen and purified on benzamidine Sepharose. Applied as an intra-arterial infusion into the thrombosed abdominal aorta under conditions of unimpeded blood flow, plasmin (4 mg/kg) and TPA (2 mg/kg) achieved equivalent clot dissolution and flow restoration.

We hypothesized that shp would also mediate negative feedback regulation of ntcp, the principal hepatic bile acid transporter.

A phase II trial of docetaxel for peripheral blood stem cell mobilization for patients with breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

As docetaxel is known to have significant antineoplastic activity against breast and ovarian cancer, we explored its application as a peripheral blood stem cell mobilizing agent in 33 women with stage lll-IV ovarian carcinoma (n = 10) or stage ll-lV breast cancer (n = 23) who were in preparation for high-dose chemotherapy. Eleven patients had bone and/or bone marrow involvement with their disease. The median number of prior regimens received before mobilization was two (range 1-3).

A feminist analysis of self-help bestsellers for improving relationships: a decade review.

Self-help literature is pervasive and influential in the United States. A critical analysis of self-help books would help therapists to determine their utility for the therapeutic process and assist them in making reading recommendations to clients. In this study, a content analysis was conducted of the top 11 relationship self-help books on the New York Times Bestseller List over a period of 10 years (1988-1998) to determine the degree to which these books support a feminist approach to therapy.

Self-help books, a pervasive and influential aspect of society, can have a beneficial or detrimental effect on the therapeutic process. This article describes a thematic analysis and feminist critique of the best-selling self-help book, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. This analysis revealed that the author's materials are inconsistent with significant family therapy research findings and key principles of feminist theories.

Clinical impact of ex vivo differentiated myeloid precursors after high-dose chemotherapy and peripheral blood progenitor cell rescue.

The infusion of ex vivo differentiated myeloid precursors may be able to shorten the period of obligatory neutropenia after high-dose chemotherapy and peripheral blood progenitor cell rescue by providing cells capable of differentiating to mature neutrophils within days of infusion. To test this hypothesis, 21 female patients with metastatic breast cancer underwent progenitor cell mobilization with cyclophosphamide, etoposide and G-CSF. CD34+ cells from one to two leukapheresis products were isolated and placed in suspension culture with a serum-free growth medium supplemented with PIXY321.

In the past two decades, feminist scholars have challenged the field of family therapy to incorporate the organizing principle of gender in its theory, practice, and training. In this paper, we introduce a training, research, and therapeutic tool that provides guidance for addressing or observing gender and power differentials in the practice of family therapy. As a training tool, the Power Equity Guide helps trainees to translate their theoretical understanding of feminist principles into specific behaviors in therapy.

At some construction engineering companies, individuals with no background in radiation safety sometimes are assigned the not always welcome title of Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). With this new title comes the responsibility of ensuring that portable gauges are used safely at their facilities and in tile field. These newly appointed RSOs sometimes lack the knowledge and experience needed to manage a radiation safety program.

Endotoxemia leads to cytokine-mediated alterations of the hepatocellular sodium-taurocholate-cotransporting polypeptide (ntcp). We hypothesized that stimulated macrophages are essential transducers for down-regulating hepatocellular bile salt uptake in response to endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) exposure. Using an in vitro model, we exposed mouse macrophages (IC-21 cell line) to LPS for 24 hours.

This article describes a case study in which several Marital and Family Therapy approaches were used to consult with a ranch family. Histologic lesions in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) naturally infected with simian retrovirus type D: comparison of seropositive, virus-positive, and uninfected animals.

Simian retrovirus (SRV) type D is a common cause of simian acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (SAIDS), a usually fatal immunosuppressive disease of macaques. Associated gross and histologic lesions have been well described for the rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) in experimental and natural infections. However, morphologic changes induced by this virus at the gross and light-microscopic level have not been documented in the cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis).

To investigate the relationship of adequate leukapheresis yield and time course of platelet recovery after mobilization chemotherapy, we retrospectively analyzed the leukapheresis yields in seven patients with Hodgkin's disease and fifteen patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma undergoing high-dose chemotherapy.
