Hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) and immune serum globulin (ISG) were examined in a randomized, double-blind trial to assess their relative efficacies in preventing type B hepatitis after needle-stick exposure to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAG)-positive donors. Clinical hepatitis developed in 1.4% of HBIG and in 5.

The cis-isomer of chlorprothixene (CPX) inhibited the excretory function of the isolated perfused rat liver. It decreased the biliary clearance and transport maximum of sulfobromophthalein (BSP). Calculation of the BSP 'clearance constants' suggested that the primary effect of the drug was on excretion and not uptake.

A number of aryl substituted amidinoureas have been prepared and examined for their gastrointestinal spasmolytic, antimotility, antidiarrheal and antisecretory effects. In general, antisecretory and antimotility effects have been found to be associated with each other in these compounds. The structure-activity relationships found show that substitution of the aromatic ring in positions other than 2 and 6 correlates poorly with potency, and potency of such compounds is low.

In vivo studies indicated that the primary effects of E. coli endotoxin on hepatic clearance of sulfobromophthalein were at the excretory level. Newborns were more sensitive to the LPS than older animals.

An unusual case of a tumorlike eosinophilic granuloma of the ascending colon is presented. In physical examination, radiographic picture and at operation this tumor appeared suspicious of a malignant obstructive neoplasm, thus leading to the resection of the right colon and to ileocolic anastomosis. Correct diagnosis can be established only by histology.

Cholestatic jaundice is one complication of nonhepatic gram-negative bacterial infection. The endotoxin of Escherichia coli has been reported to cause cholestasis by inhibiting the bile salt-independent fraction (BSIF) of bile in the perfused rat liver. Accordingly, the effects of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of E.

Hepatic injury during long term dantrolene sodium therapy occurred in 19 of 1044 patients (1.8%) monitored for at least 60 days. Six had icteric hepatitis (0.

Three extra-axial posterior fossa epidermoid tumors manifested nearly identical CT appearance of large size, sharp margination, apparently homogeneously increased attenuation in the range of 80-120 Hounsfield units, and absence of contrast-agent enhancement. This constellation of findings is distinctly different from that reported previously, and appears to be characteristic for some epidermoid tumors.

The impairment of biliary excretory function induced by E. coli endotoxin in the isolated perfused rat liver was studied by investigating its effects on canalicular bile formation. In experiments where no bile salt was infused, endotoxin administration resulted in significant decreases in bile salt-independent bile flow (BSIF) and sulfobromophthalein (BSP) excretion.

Studies were performed to delineate the effect of percentage of saturation of transferrin and total iron concentration on the rate of uptake of iron by the perfused rat liver. Normal and iron-deficient rat livers were perfused with sera that contained varying concentrations of 59Fe-labeled iron and transferrin saturation. Varying the percentage of saturation of transferrin while maintaining a constant concentration of iron did not influence the hepatic uptake of iron.

A double blind, randomized, controlled trial has been conducted in 11 Veterans Administration hospitals during a 49-month period to compare the relative efficacies of immune serum globulin (ISG) and an albumin placebo for the prevention of post-transfusion hepatitis (PTH). A total of 2204 patients, of whom 1094 received ISG, participated in the study. The results indicate that ISG significantly reduced the incidence of icteric type non-B hepatitis only (inferred to be also type non-A hepatitis).

To determine the relation between the presence of donor DNA polymerase and e antigen, and recipient hepatitis, we tested, under code, serums from a controlled trial of hepatitis B immune globulin used to treat individuals accidentally inoculated with HBs Ag-positive blood. All recipients lacked antibody to HBs Ag. In 29 of 31 donors, both polymerase and e were in perfect agreement; both demonstrated a highly significant correlation with recipient hepatitis (P less than 0.

A 51-year-old woman who had been given cobalt therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma was seen three years later with a mass in the left frontotemporal region of the brain. Biopsy specimen of the lesion showed the classic features of delayed radiation necrosis on light microscopy. In addition, several blood vessels showed endothelial cell proliferation.
