Pentagalloyl glucose (PGG) is a polyphenol with vasoprotective properties. Targeted delivery of PGG reversed aortic aneurysm growth in several rodent models associated with decreased number of macrophages and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) expression. Thus, we sought to determine cellular mechanisms by which PGG reduces macrophage-induced aortic pathogenicity and its relationship to TGF-β.

Artificial lipid bilayers have revolutionized biochemical and biophysical research by providing a versatile interface to study aspects of cell membranes and membrane-bound processes in a controlled environment. Artificial bilayers also play a central role in numerous biosensing applications, form the foundational interface for liposomal drug delivery, and provide a vital structure for the development of synthetic cells. But unlike the envelope in many living cells, artificial bilayers can be mechanically fragile.

Integrating nutrition and genetic counseling: A case study approach to interprofessional learning.

Interprofessional collaboration is an increasingly important skillset for practicing healthcare professionals including genetic counselors and registered dietitian nutritionists. A multi-part interactive case study activity was created to develop interprofessional skills for graduate students within genetic counseling and medical nutrition training programs at an academic medical center. Feedback from learners who participated in this activity highlights its effect on their post-graduation clinical practice.

Research-practice partnership: supporting rural cancer survivors in Montana.

The objective of this Research-Practice Partnership was to disseminate and implement strategies to assist Community Health Centers in improving the care of rural cancer survivors in Montana. Funded by the National Cancer Institute's Community Outreach and Engagement mechanism, this project utilized the MAP-IT (Mobilize, Assess, Plan, Implement, Track) program planning framework from Healthy People 2020. Partners included Montana's Department of Public Health and Human Services' Cancer Control Program, Montana Primary Care Association, One Health Community Health Center, and Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah.

Aerosol Particle Size Influences the Infectious Dose and Disease Severity in a Golden Syrian Hamster Model of Inhalational COVID-19.

Significant evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted via respiratory aerosols, which are known to vary as a function of respiratory activity. Most animal models examine disease presentation following inhalation of small-particle aerosols similar to those generated during quiet breathing or speaking. However, despite evidence that particle size can influence dose-infectivity relationships and disease presentation for other microorganisms, no studies have examined the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 contained in larger particle aerosols similar to those produced during coughing, singing, or talking.

Perceived social support: A study of genetic counseling graduate students in the United States (US) and Canada.

Social support is described as having positive psychological and physical outcomes and offers some protective benefits against mental illness. However, research has not addressed social support for genetic counseling graduate students, although this population is prone to elevated levels of stress in addition to field-specific phenomena like compassion fatigue and burnout. Therefore, an online survey was distributed to genetic counseling students in accredited programs in the United States and Canada to synthesize information about (1) demographic information, (2) self-identified sources of support, and (3) the availability of a strong support network.

Pancreatic cancer survival trends in the US from 2001 to 2014: a CONCORD-3 study.

Background: Survival from pancreatic cancer is low worldwide. In the US, the 5-year relative survival has been slightly higher for women, whites and younger patients than for their counterparts, and differences in age and stage at diagnosis [Corrections added Nov 16, 2022, after first online publication: a new affiliation is added to Maja Nikšić] may contribute to this pattern. We aimed to examine trends in survival by race, stage, age and sex for adults (15-99 years) diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the US.

Comparison of Dose-Response Relationships for Two Isolates of SARS-CoV-2 in a Nonhuman Primate Model of Inhalational COVID-19.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has progressed, numerous variants of SARS-CoV-2 have arisen, with several displaying increased transmissibility. The present study compared dose-response relationships and disease presentation in nonhuman primates infected with aerosols containing an isolate of the Gamma variant of SARS-CoV-2 to the results of our previous study with the earlier WA-1 isolate of SARS-CoV-2. Disease in Gamma-infected animals was mild, characterized by dose-dependent fever and oronasal shedding of virus.

Development and validation of a paper spray mass spectrometry method for the rapid quantitation of remdesivir and its active metabolite, GS-441524, in human plasma.

Introduction: Remdesivir (GS-5734) is a nucleoside analog prodrug with antiviral activity against several single-stranded RNA viruses, including the novel severe respiratory distress syndrome virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It is currently the only FDA-approved antiviral agent for the treatment of individuals with COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2. However, remdesivir pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) and toxicity data in humans are extremely limited.

With 7.3% of children under the age of 18 experiencing the death of a parent and more who experience a loss of a loved one bereavement is a common experience in the lives of children and youth. The current study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of an 8-week, school-based grief group treatment program in reducing symptoms of grief, dysregulation, and improving social support.

Prostate Cancer Trends in Montana.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in Montana and the second-most-common cause of cancer deaths. In 2014, prostate cancer incidence in Montana started increasing significantly, even as incidence in the United States overall stayed about the same. The increased incidence was not accompanied by an increase in prostate cancer mortality.

Telehealth genetic services during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Implementation and patient experiences across multiple specialties in Nebraska.

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the delivery of genetics services. In response to the pandemic, our genetics department offered telehealth visits to all outpatients, regardless of their physical proximity to Omaha, Nebraska. Traditionally, our department did not offer telehealth visits to patient's homes or to patients who lived in close proximity to a genetics clinic.

Seroconversion and fever are dose-dependent in a nonhuman primate model of inhalational COVID-19.

While evidence exists supporting the potential for aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the infectious dose by inhalation remains unknown. In the present study, the probability of infection following inhalation of SARS-CoV-2 was dose-dependent in a nonhuman primate model of inhalational COVID-19. The median infectious dose, assessed by seroconversion, was 52 TCID50 (95% CI: 23-363 TCID50), and was significantly lower than the median dose for fever (256 TCID50, 95% CI: 102-603 TCID50), resulting in a group of animals that developed an immune response post-exposure but did not develop fever or other clinical signs of infection.

Pain management is particularly challenging during dressing changes and following skin grafting procedures. We performed a retrospective chart review from January 2011 through June 2018 to evaluate the effect of nonopioid analgesic medications on opioid use in nonintubated patients.

Performance of simple serum-based tests to exclude cirrhosis prior to hepatitis C treatment in non-hospital settings in Australia.

Background: Current guidelines suggest using transient elastography (TE) or aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index (APRI) score <1 to exclude cirrhosis prior to commencing treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV). Recently, fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) <0.93 has been shown to have a high negative predictive value (NPV) for the presence of cirrhosis.

Computed tomography angiography is not accurate in predicting surgical prosthetic aortic valve implant size.

Background: Multidetector computed tomography is vital in preoperative sizing for transcatheter aortic valve replacement. The purpose of this study is to determine whether preoperative transcatheter aortic valve replacement multidetector computed tomography accurately predicts surgical aortic valve prosthesis size.

Methods: Between July 2012 and July 2017, 102 patients who underwent surgical aortic valve replacement had preoperative aortic valve sizing by multidetector computed tomography.

Deleterious de novo variants of X-linked ZC4H2 in females cause a variable phenotype with neurogenic arthrogryposis multiplex congenita.

Pathogenic variants in the X-linked gene ZC4H2, which encodes a zinc-finger protein, cause an infrequently described syndromic form of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) with central and peripheral nervous system involvement. We present genetic and detailed phenotypic information on 23 newly identified families and simplex cases that include 19 affected females from 18 families and 14 affected males from nine families. Of note, the 15 females with deleterious de novo ZC4H2 variants presented with phenotypes ranging from mild to severe, and their clinical features overlapped with those seen in affected males.
