Background: Differentiating between viral and bacterial respiratory tract infections in pediatric patients remains a significant diagnostic challenge, often leading to the overuse of antibiotics. Myxovirus resistance protein A (MxA) has been identified as a promising biomarker for viral infections. This study aimed to assess the fluctuations in blood MxA levels among children with viral respiratory infections and to explore the differences in MxA levels between viral and bacterial infections, focusing on clinical implications for antibiotic use.

The emergence of XBB- and JN.1-lineages with remarkable immune evasion characteristics have led to rises in breakthrough infections within populations. In addition, the unfavorable impacts of immune imprinting, stemming from continuous exposure to antigens from circulated viruses, have been observed to incline immune response against earlier lineages, thereby declining the neutralization to newly emerged Omicron subvariants.

During membrane fusion, the lyssavirus glycoprotein undergoes a series of low-pH-induced conformational transitions. Here, we report the structures of Ikoma lyssavirus and Mokola lyssavirus glycoproteins, with which we believe that we have trapped the proteins in pre-fusion and post-fusion states respectively.

Green tea, derived from Camellia sinensis, contains polyphenolic active compounds that exhibit diverse pharmacological effects including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. Employing various concentrations of green tea polyphenols (GTPs; 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 μg∕mL), human normal lung epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells (A549) underwent treatment. The cell viability was assessed using the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, proliferation was examined through the colony formation assay, apoptosis was monitored via flow cytometry, cell migration, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated proteins (E-cadherin, N-cadherin) were determined by Western blot.

This study aimed to identify and verify the microRNAs (miRNAs) that may regulate ACY-1 through database prediction analysis, and verify the mutual regulatory effect of miRNA and ACY-1 in NB through cell experiments.
Methods: The miRNAs that might bind ACY-1 were predicted and selected by TargetScan, miRTarBase and four other databases, the expression of the predicted miRNAs and ACY-1 was detected by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in four groups of clinical samples, and the differentially expressed miRNAs were screened.
Background: The incidence of magnet ingestion in children has escalated concurrent with the rise in popularity of magnetic playthings, bearing the capacity to induce substantial morbidity.
Aim: The objective of this study was to encapsulate our accumulated expertise in handling pediatric cases featuring multiple magnetic foreign bodies within the gastrointestinal tract sometimes necessitating surgical intervention, as well as to formulate a clinical management algorithm.
Methods: This was a retrospective review of patients with multiple magnetic foreign bodies in the digestive tract, admitted to Shenzhen Children's Hospital, between January 2018 and December 2022.
Despite the growing demand for transparent conductive films in smart and wearable electronics for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, achieving a flexible EMI shielding film, while maintaining a high transmittance remains a significant challenge. Herein, a flexible, transparent, and conductive copper (Cu) metal mesh film for EMI shielding is fabricated by self-forming crackle template method and electroplating technique. The Cu mesh film shows an ultra-low sheet resistance (0.

The present study focuses on a fluorite mine as the research subject, utilizing coarse tailings, fine tailings, cement substitute-curing agent, and recycled waste glass as the primary raw materials. It investigates the changes in compressive strength of coarse tailing with varying sand- binder ratios and glass content at 3-day, 7-day, and 28-day intervals when the filling slurry concentration is set at 77% and the ratio of coarse tailings to fine tailings is maintained at 2:1.

Nanobodies have recently attracted extensive attentions due to their excellent biochemical and binding properties. Here, we report two high-affinity nanobodies (Nb-015 and Nb-021) that target non-overlapping epitopes in SARS-CoV-2 S-RBD.

However, no PA vaccine has been approved to date, and new protective antigens are needed to improve their efficacy. In this study, Luminex beads were used to identify new candidate antigens, after which their crystal structure was determined, and their potential contribution to bacterial pathogenesis was assessed in vitro and in vivo.

Although the structure of the RBD_ACE2 complex has been well studied, its functional mechanism in membrane fusion is still not fully understood. Here, using an in vitro cell-vesicle content-mixing assay, it is found that the cleavage at the S2' site by thrombin (Thr) protease strongly accelerates membrane fusion, compared to that of cleavage at the S1/S2 site by PreScission (3C) protease.

The ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has caused devastating impacts on the public health and the global economy. Rapid viral antigenic evolution has led to the continual generation of new variants. Of special note is the recently expanding Omicron subvariants that are capable of immune evasion from most of the existing neutralizing antibodies (nAbs).
