A connection between neurovascular conflicts within the cerebellopontine angle and vestibular neuritis, a case controlled cohort study.

This retrospective, observer blinded case-control study aims to compare the prevalence of neurovascular conflicts (NVCs) of the vestibulocochlear nerve and the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) in patients presenting with clinical signs of acute vestibular neuritis with and without subsequent objective vestibular function loss (VFL). 58 acute cases of clinically suspected acute vestibular neuritis were investigated with same day cranial MRI at a tertiary referral centre and compared to 61 asymptomatic controls. The prevalence of NVCs in cases with objective VFL were also compared to cases without VFL.

Management of sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma with intracerebral invasion: Clinical experience at a single institution and review of the literature.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) represents less than 1% of all malignancies. Most of the tumors are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when they have already invaded neighboring tissue structures. We describe the cases of 2 patients with a substantial intracerebral extension of SNUC who were treated at our institution.

[Streptococcal mediastinitis after thyroidectomy. A literature review].

Introduction: Surgical site infections after thyroid surgery are mostly superficial and can be well treated. Streptococcal mediastinitis in contrast is a rare but life-threatening complication.

Case Report: A 57-year-old female patient experienced septic fever, increase of inflammation parameters and erythema 2 days after thyroid surgery for Graves' disease.

Late-onset palsy of the recurrent laryngeal nerve after thyroid surgery.

Background: A small subset of patients may develop late-onset palsy of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) after thyroid surgery. However, no conclusive data have been published regarding the incidence of, and possible risk factors for, this complication.

Methods: Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative data from consecutive patients who underwent thyroid surgery at a single centre between 1999 and 2012 were analysed.

Comparison of shear bond strength of plastic and ceramic brackets.

Objectives: The purpose of this in vitro study is to compare the shear bond strength of various esthetic brackets used in conjunction with two different adhesive systems.

Methods: Five non-silanized ceramic brackets (Aspire Gold/Forestadent, Clarity™/3M Unitek, CLEAR/Adenta, Contour Twin/ODS, QuicKlear/Forestadent) and four plastic brackets (Aesthetik-Line®/Forestadent, Brillant®/Forestadent, Composite Clear®/ODS, Elegance®/Dentaurum) were bonded either with Transbond™ XT (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA) or with ConTec SE (Dentaurum, Ispringen, Germany) to bovine permanent mandibular incisors. Twelve specimens were tested in each group, thus, bonding 60 ceramic and 48 plastic brackets with either adhesive to a total of 216 teeth.

An adjuvanted herpes simplex virus 2 subunit vaccine elicits a T cell response in mice and is an effective therapeutic vaccine in Guinea pigs.

Immunotherapeutic herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) vaccine efficacy depends upon the promotion of antigen-specific immune responses that inhibit reactivation or reactivated virus, thus controlling both recurrent lesions and viral shedding. In the present study, a candidate subunit vaccine, GEN-003/MM-2, was evaluated for its ability to induce a broad-spectrum immune response in mice and therapeutic efficacy in HSV-2-infected guinea pigs. GEN-003 is comprised of HSV-2 glycoprotein D2 (gD2ΔTMR340-363) and a truncated form of infected cell polypeptide 4 (ICP4383-766), formulated with Matrix M-2 (MM-2) adjuvant (GEN-003/MM-2).

[The most important results on primary chemoradiation for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: highlights from the 2012 ASCO meeting].

Primary concomitant and sequential chemoradiation is a commonly used therapeutic strategy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. At the annual meeting of the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology numerous trial results were presented. A selection of the most important trials will be summarized in this article.

ADAM8 in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck: a retrospective study.

Background: A disintegrin and metalloproteinase (ADAMs) have been associated with multiple malignancies. ADAMs are involved in cell fusion, cell migration, membrane protein shedding and proteolysis. ADAM8 has been found to be overexpressed in squamous cell carcinomas of the lung.

Identification of HLA class II H5N1 hemagglutinin epitopes following subvirion influenza A (H5N1) vaccination.

Prophylactic immunization against influenza infection requires CD4+ T-helper cell activity for optimal humoral and cellular immunity. Currently there is one FDA approved H5N1 subvirion vaccine available, although stockpiles of this vaccine are insufficient for broad population coverage and the vaccine has only demonstrated modest immunogenicity. Specific activation of CD4+ T-helper cells using class II H5N1 HA peptide vaccines may be a useful component in immunization strategy and design.

Medication study supports registered nurses' competence for single checking.

In 1999, a review of medication policies and practices for The Geelong Hospital, a Victorian regional acute care hospital, was conducted under the leadership and direction of the Executive Nursing Director. The findings of the review suggested that a study be conducted to examine the safety of single-person (registered nurse division 1) checking of a designated group of medications that had previously been double-checked. The present study was conducted as a descriptive study in adult inpatient units and speciality and midwifery services of The Geelong Hospital, and included the monitoring of medication errors for the designated group of medications under a single-person checking protocol for a 7-month period.

Allowing the patients to sleep: flexible medication times in an acute hospital.

In 1999, under the leadership and direction of the Director of Clinical Services (Nursing), Roger Napthine, Project Consultant, was commissioned to undertake a review of medication policies and practices for a regional acute-care hospital. This initiative was taken with the view of improving nursing practice and patient care. Recommendations from Napthine's review included the trial in a medical and a surgical unit of a change in the administration of routine morning and evening medication times.
