Background: Health care systems and the nursing profession worldwide are being transformed by technology and digitalization. Nurses acquire digital competence through their own experience in daily practice, but also from education and training; nursing education providers thus play an important role. While nursing education providers have some level of digital competence, there is a need for ongoing training and support for them to develop more advanced skills and effectively integrate technology into their teaching.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are widely implemented tools for long-term ocean conservation and resource management. Assessments of MPA performance have largely focused on specific ecosystems individually and have rarely evaluated performance across multiple ecosystems either in an individual MPA or across an MPA network. We evaluated the conservation performance of 59 MPAs in California's large MPA network, which encompasses 4 primary ecosystems (surf zone, kelp forest, shallow reef, deep reef) and 4 bioregions, and identified MPA attributes that best explain performance.

Background: The noise levels in intensive care units usually exceed the recommended limits in (inter)national recommendations. Such noise levels can affect both the recovery of intensive care patients and the performance of staff. The aim of this study was to reduce ward-based noise levels in three intensive care units (anesthesiological, neurological, and neonatological).

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects more than 10% of the global population. As kidney function negatively correlates with the presence of interstitial fibrosis, the development of new anti-fibrotic therapies holds promise to stabilize functional decline in CKD patients. The goal of the study was to generate a scalable bioprinted 3-dimensional kidney tubulo-interstitial disease model of kidney fibrosis.

Type 2 epithelial cytokines, including thymic stromal lymphopoietin and IL-33, play central roles in modulation of type 2 immune cells, such as basophils. Basophils are a small subset of granulocytes within the leukocyte population that predominantly exist in the blood. They have non-redundant roles in allergic inflammation in peripheral tissues such as the lung, skin and gut, where they increase and accumulate at inflammatory lesions and exclusively produce large amounts of IL-4, a type 2 cytokine.

Introduction: Induction of labor is indicated when benefits of delivery outweigh benefits of prolonged pregnancy, which is not always welcomed by women. Castor oil is accepted as an "old household remedy" for labor induction but is not yet part of the official guidelines. Nevertheless, it is often used, mostly even before the women are admitted to the hospital.

The development of effective recycling technologies is essential for the recovery and reuse of the raw materials required for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Future recycling processes depend on accessible information, necessitating the implementation of a digital battery passport. The European battery regulation mandates the use of a machine-readable identifier physically attached to the batteries for accessing digital information.

Background: Access to health services for asylum seekers is legally restricted in Germany. The law is subject to interpretation, therefore the chance of receiving care is not equally distributed among asylum seekers. What services are provided to whom is ultimately decided by health professionals and government employees.

Fibrosis represents the uncontrolled replacement of parenchymal tissue with extracellular matrix (ECM) produced by myofibroblasts. While genetic fate-tracing and single-cell RNA-Seq technologies have helped elucidate fibroblast heterogeneity and ontogeny beyond fibroblast to myofibroblast differentiation, newly identified fibroblast populations remain ill defined, with respect to both the molecular cues driving their differentiation and their subsequent role in fibrosis. Using an unbiased approach, we identified the metalloprotease ADAMTS12 as a fibroblast-specific gene that is strongly upregulated during active fibrogenesis in humans and mice.

Background: Microglial activation is one hallmark of Alzheimer disease (AD) neuropathology but the impact of the regional interplay of microglia cells in the brain is poorly understood. We hypothesized that microglial activation is regionally synchronized in the healthy brain but experiences regional desynchronization with ongoing neurodegenerative disease. We addressed the existence of a microglia connectome and investigated microglial desynchronization as an AD biomarker.

Purpose: Current therapy strategies still provide only limited success in the treatment of glioblastoma, the most frequent primary brain tumor in adults. In addition to the characterization of the tumor microenvironment, global changes in the brain of patients with glioblastoma have been described. However, the impact and molecular signature of neuroinflammation distant of the primary tumor site have not yet been thoroughly elucidated.

Article Synopsis
  • Emerging evidence indicates that cellular senescence plays a crucial role in chronic kidney disease (CKD), with proximal tubule epithelial cells (PTECs) and fibroblasts being key contributors to this condition.
  • Researchers developed a new human kidney cell model by isolating PTECs and fibroblasts and introducing a specific viral vector, allowing them to better mimic real kidney cells and study their behaviors.
  • The study found that senescent PTECs can trigger fibrosis in fibroblasts, and the presence of p21-positive cells in kidney sections correlated with more severe fibrosis and reduced kidney function, thereby underscoring the importance of cellular senescence in CKD.

Despite extensive research on the metabolism of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), knowledge gaps persist regarding their isoform-specific biotransformation pathways. This study aimed to elucidate the role of different cytochrome P450 enzymes in PCB metabolism, focusing on WHO-congeners 2,4,4'-trichlorobiphenyl (PCB28), 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB52), and 2,2',4,5,5'-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB101). Utilizing engineered HEK293 cell lines, we investigated the in vitro metabolism of these PCBs by CYP1A2, CYP2C8, CYP2C9, CYP3A4, CYP2A6, and CYP2E1, revealing robust production of hydroxylated metabolites.

Article Synopsis
  • Delay discounting is the tendency to prefer smaller, immediate rewards over larger rewards that take longer to receive, and it is linked to substance use disorders and mental health issues.
  • A study using Heterogeneous Stock rats identified significant genetic loci on chromosomes 14 and 20 associated with delay discounting behavior via a genome-wide association study (GWAS).
  • The genes found include Slc35f1, which may influence behavior through its expression levels, and Adgrl3, suggesting new genetic factors involved in delay discounting worthy of further investigation.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) has a fibroproliferative phase that may be followed by pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary fibrosis following COVID-19 pneumonia has been described at autopsy and following lung transplantation. We hypothesized that protein mediators of tissue remodeling and monocyte chemotaxis are elevated in the plasma and endotracheal aspirates of critically ill patients with COVID-19 who subsequently develop features of pulmonary fibroproliferation.

Targeted protein degradation (TPD) modulates protein function beyond inhibition of enzyme activity or protein-protein interactions. Most degraders function by proximity induction, and directly bridge an E3 ligase with the target to be degraded. However, many proteins might not be addressable via proximity-based degraders, and other challenges, such as resistance acquisition, exist.
