Biophysical methods such as circular dichroism (CD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) have been minimally used to characterize insect-derived proteins. This study examines the insect Alphitobius diaperinus as a potential protein source. Techniques such as alkaline solubilization coupled to isoelectric precipitation and Osborne fractionation were used to obtain protein concentrates and fractions (albumins, globulins, prolamins, glutelins).

Article Synopsis
  • Histamine plays a role as an endogenous anticonvulsant, with research showing that H1 receptor antagonists can cause seizures, while H3 receptor antagonists have shown promise in various rodent epilepsy models.
  • The study evaluated the efficacy of the H3 receptor antagonist DL76 in preventing seizures induced by maximal electroshock (MES) in mice, comparing its effects to valproic acid, a well-known antiepileptic drug.
  • DL76 demonstrated significant, dose-dependent seizure protection without negatively affecting maternal health, fetal development, or causing major abnormalities in mice during pregnancy.

This review aims to provide an updated overview of the effects of protein extraction/recovery on antinutritional factors (ANFs) in plant protein ingredients, such as protein-rich fractions, protein concentrates, and isolates. ANFs mainly include lectins, trypsin inhibitors, phytic acid, phenolic compounds, oxalates, saponins, tannins, and cyanogenic glycosides. The current technologies used to recover proteins (e.

Background: Globally, patients with diabetes suffer from increased disease severity and mortality due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Old age, high body mass index (BMI), comorbidities, and complications of diabetes are recognized as major risk factors for infection severity and mortality.

Aim: To investigate the risk and predictors of higher severity and mortality among in-hospital patients with COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes (T2D) during the first wave of the pandemic in Dubai (March-September 2020).

Article Synopsis
  • The review highlights that edible insects contain essential amino acids comparable to traditional protein sources, suggesting they could meet protein needs for various population groups.
  • It summarizes current extraction methods for insect proteins, comparing their yields and final protein content, while discussing the functional properties of these proteins.
  • The text also addresses the bioactive peptides from insects, noting their health benefits, but emphasizes ongoing concerns regarding allergens in insect proteins and potential methods to reduce allergenicity.

Objective: This study aimed to determine caregiver's knowledge of appropriate car restraint systems (CRSs) use and compare this with the actual use among children presenting to the pediatric emergency department (PED), and to determine the efficacy of PED-based intervention on improving knowledge.

Methods: We conducted a prospective, intervention study of children (<8 years old) during a 12-month period in the PED. Based on their height and weight, children were assigned to group 1 (rear facing), group 2 (forward facing), or group 3 (booster).

Background: Obesity is affecting children in epidemic proportions in the United States with nearly 25% of children being obese. Consequences of obesity including dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease are leading to morbidity at younger ages. Parallel to the obesity and diabetes epidemics, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency has reached very high levels and has been associated with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia.

Reservoir computing systems utilize dynamic reservoirs having short-term memory to project features from the temporal inputs into a high-dimensional feature space. A readout function layer can then effectively analyze the projected features for tasks, such as classification and time-series analysis. The system can efficiently compute complex and temporal data with low-training cost, since only the readout function needs to be trained.

High-density memristor-crossbar architecture is a very promising technology for future computing systems. The simplicity of the gateless-crossbar structure is both its principal advantage and the source of undesired sneak-paths of current. This parasitic current could consume an enormous amount of energy and ruin the readout process.

Objectives: Prescription errors occur frequently in pediatric emergency departments (PEDs).The effect of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) with electronic medication alert system (EMAS) on these is unknown. The objective was to compare prescription errors rates before and after introduction of CPOE with EMAS in a PED.

The Wilms' tumor (WT1) gene mutations were detected in patients with most forms of acute leukemia. However, the biological significance and the prognostic impact of WT1 mutation in Egyptian patients with acute myeloid leukemia with normal karyotype (AML-NK) are still uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the incidence and clinical relevance of WT1 gene mutations in acute myeloid leukemia with normal karyotype (AML-NK).

Background: Heated, humidified, high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy (HHHFNC) has been used to improve ventilation in preterm infants. There are no data on airway pressures generated and efficacy in bronchiolitis.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine nasopharyngeal (NP) pressures generated with HHHFNC therapy in bronchiolitis.
