A metal-dielectric subwavelength grating structure was investigated for making single-peak narrow linewidth optical reflection filters in the near-infrared region. The subwavelength grating filter structure consists of a one-dimensional periodic array of metal (gold) and dielectric (AlO) elements on a dielectric substrate. Optimized reflection filters have a single reflection peak with ~10 nm linewidth in the infrared region over a wide spectral band.

This study investigated the degree of humification of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during different periods of cattle manure composting using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and fluorescence spectroscopy (emission, synchronous scan, and excitation-emission matrix) and determined which method is more suitable for analysis of the humification degree of DOM. Two composting piles were prepared by mixing manure and corn straw. Oxytocin (OT) can modulate multiple physiological functions via binding to the widely distributed oxytocin receptor (OTR). In this study, we investigated the seasonal expressions of OT, OTR and extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK1/2) signaling pathway components in the scented gland of muskrat during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Histologically, glandular cells, interstitial cells and excretory tubules were identified in the breeding season scented glands, whereas epithelial cells were sparse in the non-breeding season.

A new strategy for the immobilization of phenyl-functionalized silica nanoparticles onto nickel-titanium alloy wires is presented. The homogeneous and compact silica nanoparticle coating was achieved on the hydrothermally treated nickel-titanium wires with large surface area by electrophoretic deposition, and followed by self-assembled modification of phenyltrichlorosilane. Coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, the extraction performance of the fabricated fiber was evaluated using typical aromatic compounds in direct-immersion mode of solid-phase microextraction.

Pulmonary vascular remodeling characterized by concentric wall thickening and intraluminal obliteration is a major contributor to the elevated pulmonary vascular resistance in patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH). Here we report that increased hypoxia-inducible factor 2α (HIF-2α) in lung vascular endothelial cells (LVECs) under normoxic conditions is involved in the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH) by inducing endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT), which subsequently results in vascular remodeling and occlusive lesions. We observed significant EndMT and markedly increased expression of SNAI, an inducer of EndMT, in LVECs from patients with IPAH and animals with experimental PH compared with normal controls.

In order to investigate if deletion patterns of the preS region can predict liver disease advancement, the preS region of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) genome in 45 chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and 94 HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients was sequenced by next-generation sequencing (NGS) and the percentages of nucleotide deletion in the preS region were analysed. Hierarchical clustering and heatmaps based on deletion percentages of preS revealed different deletion patterns between CHB and HCC patients. Intergenotype comparison also indicated divergence in preS deletions between HBV genotype B and C.
