Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective treatment for schizophrenia and mood disorders; however, most evidence is derived from the adult population, with less evidence in adolescents. We sought to determine the use of ECT in adolescents in the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) and evaluate the treatment outcome.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective naturalistic analysis of ECT registry data of patients aged from 10 to 19 years from March 2017 to March 2023.

Background: To investigate the efficacy of three-compartment restriction spectrum imaging (RSI), diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the assessment of lymph node metastases (LNM) in rectal cancer.

Methods: A total of 77 patients with rectal cancer who underwent pelvic MRI were enrolled. RSI-derived parameters (f, f, and f), DKI-derived parameters (D and K), and the DWI-derived parameter (ADC) were calculated and compared using a Mann-Whitney U test or independent samples t-test.

Fecal DNA-based Syndecan 2 () methylation detection is a promising non-invasive strategy for early colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. In China, commercial assays for methylation detection vary in sensitivity and specificity, yet there is no standardized external quality assessment (EQA) to ensure accuracy. This study utilized CRISPR-Cas9 and homology-directed repair (HDR) technologies to edit the promoter in 293T cells, creating hypermethylated and heterogeneous cell lines.

Introduction: In Asia, many caregivers are culturally obliged to assume the role of taking care of individuals experiencing chronic schizophrenia, even as they grapple with stigma and compassion fatigue. Despite the significance of this phenomenon, the collective experiences of Asian caregivers remain poorly understood.

Aim: To synthesise qualitative evidence on the experiences of informal caregivers when caring for individuals with chronic schizophrenia in Asia.

Article Synopsis
  • In patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis (ADC), changes in blood inflammatory markers can indicate a worsening condition, regardless of underlying causes like infections.
  • The study categorized 394 ADC patients into four stages of severity and analyzed their blood cell counts and inflammatory markers to see how these factors influenced disease progression.
  • Key findings showed that higher neutrophil counts and specific cytokines (IL-25, IL-6, IL-22) were linked to a higher risk of advancing to more severe stages, while lower lymphocyte counts and IFN-γ levels suggested a worse prognosis.

Diverging from conventional cell division models, plant cells undergo incomplete division to generate plasmodesmata communication bridges between daughter cells. Although fundamental for plant multicellularity, the molecular events leading to bridge stabilization, as opposed to severing, remain unknown. Using electron tomography, we mapped the transition from cell plate fenestrae to plasmodesmata.

Article Synopsis
  • * In this study, researchers analyzed B cell receptor (BCR) repertoires from 36 HCC tumor samples and 10 liver cirrhosis biopsies to explore immune system changes during liver cancer development.
  • * The findings showed that BCR patterns in HCC significantly differ from those in liver cirrhosis, with lower diversity in HCC, suggesting that BCR analysis could help predict HCC progression and aid in developing targeted immunotherapy.

Background: Multiple models intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) based F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance(F-FDG PET/MR) could reflect the microscopic information of the tumor from multiple perspectives. However, its value in the prognostic assessment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) still needs to be further explored.

Objective: To compare the value of F-FDG PET/MR metabolic parameters and diffusion parameters in the prognostic assessment of patients with NSCLC.

Unlabelled: Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) caused by viruses are prevalent and significant conditions in clinical settings. Accurate and effective detection is of paramount importance in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of viral RTIs. With technological advancements, multiplex real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) assays have been developed and extensively adopted for the diagnosis of viral RTIs.

Limitations in the sensitivity, linear detection range, and cross-reaction of lateral flow immunoassays mainly hamper their application in rapid screening for multiple targets. In this work, we designed a new time-resolved fluorescence immunoassay (TRFIA) platform to overcome these limitations. This platform uses europium chelate polystyrene (PS@Eu) nanoparticles conjugated with monoclonal antibodies to sense multiple mycotoxins.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the predominant form of primary liver cancer and is the leading cause of cancer-related death. The aim of this study was to construct a nomogram to predict cancer-specific survival (CSS) in middle-aged patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. Clinical data were downloaded from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database for middle-aged patients diagnosed with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (AJCC stage III and IV) from 2000 to 2019.

Peer support specialists (PSSs) in mental healthcare services are individuals recovering from mental health conditions and providing formal peer support to clients with similar conditions. Despite evidence of the benefits of this modality and the increasing demand for it, little is known about the PSSs' experiences in mental healthcare services. This review systematically synthesises available qualitative data on the certified PSSs' experiences in providing formal peer support in mental healthcare services.

Residual pesticides in agricultural environments, including soil and irrigation water, can be taken up by plants, and thus pose a potential risk to food safety. Although tolfenpyrad has been widely used in tea plantations, limited information is available on its root uptake and fate in tea plants (Camellia sinensis L.).

Background & Aims: With the rising prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as a significant etiology for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), lean NAFLD-HCC has emerged as a specific distinct subtype. This study sought to investigate long-term outcomes following curative-intent hepatectomy for early-stage NAFLD-HCC among lean patients compared with overweight and obese individuals.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective analysis was used to assess early-stage NAFLD-HCC patients undergoing curative-intent hepatectomy between 2009 and 2022.

What Is Known About The Subject: Individuals with severe and enduring mental health challenges continued to consume mental health services for an average of 13 years as they needed multiple acute psychiatric admissions due to the challenges they experienced in their everyday activities. As caregivers of individuals with severe and enduring mental health challenges, they often bear the brunt of caregiving through their assistance with activities of daily living (ADL), providing emotional support and ensuring medication compliance for their loved ones. When caring for their loved ones, caregivers often reported psychological stress, social isolation and emotional exhaustion due to stressors such as uncertainty of the future, the lack of support from professional services and the isolation from their own social network and support mechanism.

Background: Patients with primary multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have a poor prognosis and often experience a high rate of treatment failure. Multifocal HCC is mainly caused by intrahepatic metastasis (IM), and though portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) is considered a hallmark of IM, the molecular mechanism by which primary HCC cells invade the portal veins remains unclear. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the early signs of metastasis of HCC to arrange better treatment for patients.

This study combines laboratory experiments and discrete element simulation methods to analyze the mechanism and deterioration patterns of sandstone surrounding rock voiding the bottom of a heavy-haul railway tunnel. It is based on previously acquired measurement data from optical fiber grating sensors installed in the Taihangshan Mountain Tunnel of the Wari Railway. By incorporating rock particle wastage rate results, a method for calculating the peak strength and elastic modulus attenuation of surrounding rock is proposed.
