Fast virtual stenting (FVS) is a promising preoperative planning aid for thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) of aortic dissection. It aims at digitally predicting the reshaped aortic true lumen (TL) under specific operation plans (stent-graft deployment region and radius) to assess and avoid reoperation risk, but has not yet been applied clinically due to the difficulty in achieving accurate and time-dependent predictions. In this work, we propose a deep-learning-based model for FVS to solve the above problems.

Article Synopsis
  • Major pathologic response is a better predictor of survival for patients with resectable stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancer than pathological complete response, and the study highlights its significance in survival analyses.
  • The study enrolled 38 patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy, with findings showing significant differences in overall and disease-free survival based on major pathologic response.
  • For patients not achieving major pathologic response, receiving at least 2 cycles of therapy improved survival outcomes, with a suggestion that neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy may provide additional benefits.

Pyroptosis has gained attention for its potential to reinvigorate the immune system within the tumor microenvironment. However, current approaches employing pyroptosis inducers suffer from limitations. They primarily rely on single agents, lack precise targeting, and potentially disrupt the intricate bone formation microenvironment, hindering local repair of tumor-induced bone defects.

Advances in manufacturing technologies and materials are crucial to the commercial deployment of energy technologies. We present the case of concentrating solar power (CSP) with molten salt (MS) thermal storage, where low-cost, high-efficiency heat exchangers (HXs) are needed to achieve cost competitiveness. The materials required to tolerate the extreme operating conditions in CSP systems make it difficult or infeasible to produce them using conventional manufacturing processes.

Background: Microbial adaptation to salinity has been a classic inquiry in the field of microbiology. It has been demonstrated that microorganisms can endure salinity stress via either the "salt-in" strategy, involving inorganic ion uptake, or the "salt-out" strategy, relying on compatible solutes. While these insights are mostly based on laboratory-cultured isolates, exploring the adaptive mechanisms of microorganisms within natural salinity gradient is crucial for gaining a deeper understanding of microbial adaptation in the estuarine ecosystem.

Article Synopsis
  • * It finds that silencing DRP1 and using the treatment isoliquiritigenin (ISL) can reduce the adverse effects of diabetes on VSMCs, such as heightened oxidative stress and cell proliferation.
  • * ISL works by directly binding to a specific site on DRP1, decreasing its activity related to mitochondrial fission, and ultimately mitigating intimal hyperplasia in diabetic models.

Article Synopsis
  • Vascular calcification (VC) in diabetes is driven by the switching of vascular smooth muscle cells to an osteogenic phenotype, which can be mitigated by mitophagy, a process that cleans up damaged mitochondria.
  • This study evaluates how the GLP-1 receptor agonist exendin 4 (EX4) impacts mitophagy-related phenotype switching in VSMCs, using T2DM mice models and cultured human cells under high glucose conditions.
  • EX4 was found to enhance mitophagy, improve mitochondrial function, and activate the AMPK signaling pathway, which collectively reduced VC in diabetic mice and inhibited the problematic osteogenic differentiation of VSMCs.

Background: Robot-assisted esophagectomy (RAE), video-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (VAMIE), and open esophagectomy (OE) all have significant roles in the management of esophageal cancer (EC). Few studies have compared efficacy and safety between RAE, VAMIE, and OE for resectable EC after neoadjuvant treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the short-term outcomes between RAE, VAMIE, and OE for resectable EC after neoadjuvant treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different pre-dilatation techniques (Chocolate balloon and sequential enlarging balloon) compared to the conventional balloon method before drug-coated balloon treatment for femoropopliteal artery lesions.
  • A total of 435 limbs from 429 patients were analyzed, with findings showing that both alternative techniques used larger balloons than the conventional method, which led to a lower bailout stenting rate in the Chocolate balloon group.
  • Six months post-procedure, the major adverse event rates were similar across all groups, indicating that the newer methods were as safe as the traditional approach.

Excessive proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) contribute to the intimal hyperplasia in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients after percutaneous coronary intervention. We aimed to investigate the role of lncRNA cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2B antisense RNA 1 (CDKN2B-AS1) in VSMC proliferation and migration, as well as the underlying mechanism. T2DM model mice with carotid balloon injury were used in vivo and mouse aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (MOVAS) stimulated by insulin were used in vitro to assess the role of CDKN2B-AS1 in VSMC proliferation and migration following vascular injury in T2DM state.

Type-b aortic dissection (AD) is a life-threatening cardiovascular disease and the primary treatment is thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). Due to the lack of a rapid and accurate segmentation technique, the patient-specific postoperative AD model is unavailable in clinical practice, resulting in impracticable 3D morphological and hemodynamic analyses during TEVAR assessment. This work aims to construct a deep learning-based segmentation framework for postoperative type-b AD.
