Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate whether murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) is able to exacerbate the atherosclerotic process in apolipoprotein E knockout (apoE -/-) mice, and the effect of fluvastatin on the atherogenesis.

Methods: The apoE-/- mice kept on a west diet were given low dosage of MCMV. At 14,18 and 24 weeks post infection, AS lesion were measured on aorta.

Objective: To investigate the clinical manifestation, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and auxiliary examination findings of adult viral meningitis.

Methods: 62 adult patients with viral meningitis were retrospectively analyzed.

Results: Headache occurred in all the 62 (100%) patients, fever occurred in 61 (98%) patients, meningeal irritation sign occurred in 48 (77%) patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the link between recent infections from various viruses and relapse in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RR MS) patients.
  • Researchers tested 34 RR MS patients and 200 controls for IgM antibodies to several viruses using the ELISA method, comparing infection rates between the groups.
  • Results showed that while there was a significant presence of coxsackievirus B VI and V in RR MS patients, other viruses did not show a major difference, and recent infections did not correlate with symptom severity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection and atherosclerosis in patients with ischemic stroke, focusing on a Chinese Han population.
  • Researchers analyzed the presence of HCMV DNA and antigens in the internal carotid arteries of stroke patients and controls, using various detection methods.
  • Results showed a higher prevalence of HCMV immediate early (IE) antigen in stroke patients, suggesting that HCMV may play a role in the development of atherosclerosis and could be present in the affected blood vessel walls.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection impacts the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in human endothelial cells.
  • Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were infected with CMV and the levels of MMP-2 mRNA and activity were measured at various times post-infection.
  • Results showed that MMP-2 expression and activity remained stable at 6 hours post-infection, but significantly increased at 12 and 24 hours, suggesting that CMV may play a role in atherosclerosis through this up-regulation of MMP-2.

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics of Chinese patients suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and provide clinical and laboratory evidence for the study of its etiology and treatment.

Methods: 82 patients with CFS diagnosed based on the CDC criteria 1994 were recruited. History was collected, and physical examination was made.

Objective: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), especially the immediate early (IE) gene of the virus, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to confirm the presence of HCMV IE gene DNA in intracranial artery walls and the association of the virus with the development of atherosclerosis.

Methods: HCMV IE gene was tested in formaldehyde-fixed intracranial arteries from 35 cases with cerebral atherosclerosis and 20 negative controls.
