Article Synopsis
  • Older patients with skin cancer often have other health issues, making tumor removal and reconstruction difficult.
  • This study assesses the safety and effectiveness of two surgical techniques, cervicofacial (CFF) and cervicothoracic (CTF) flaps, for repairing large facial defects in older patients.
  • Results showed both methods are reliable, with no complete flap failures and a majority of patients remaining disease-free post-surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the use of extended vertical lower trapezius island myocutaneous flap (eTMF) for reconstructing significant soft tissue defects in the head and neck after removing extensive plexiform neurofibromas in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).
  • The surgical procedure showed positive outcomes, with improved facial aesthetics, function (such as swallowing and speech), and a notable increase in patients' quality of life post-surgery.
  • The results indicate that eTMF is a safe and effective method for enhancing both cosmetic appearance and social well-being after substantial tissue reconstruction.

Background: There is a lack of classified definitions and corresponding treatment principles for complications related to titanium miniplate (TMP) and biodegradable miniplate (BMP).

Aims: This study proposes a classification system for complications related to TMP and BMP osteosynthesis and evaluates the effectiveness of the classification system in the treatment of the complications.

Methods: One hundred forty-two patients with advanced-stage oral cavity and oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) underwent oncological surgery via lip-split transmandibular (LTM) approach including midline, paramedian, stair-step, and triangle.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FPCT) parameters for detecting recurrent disease and the outcomes of salvage surgery in patients with locally advanced oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) after multimodal treatment. In total, 69 patients with locally advanced TSCC were treated with multimodal therapy. All patients underwent whole-body FPCT scans 4-10 months after the initial surgery.

Background: The flap based on the facial-angular vessels (FAVs) has several names and cannot capture the hemodynamics.

Aims: This study was performed to assess the reliability of various types of flaps based on the FAVs for reconstructing oral and maxillofacial defects following cancer ablation.

Patients And Methods: Forty-three oral and maxillofacial defects were reconstructed with facial-angular artery island flaps (FAAIF, n =14), including V-Y advancement-type and rotation-type flaps based on FAVs and reverse-flow FAAIFs (R-FAAIF, n =29), including ipsilateral, contralateral rotation, full-thickness, and folded types, based on distal FAVs following cancer ablation.

Background: The conventional approach for maxillectomy has some common and serious complications.

Aims: The present study evaluated the outcomes of maxillectomy and flap reconstruction after cancer ablation using the lip-split parasymphyseal mandibulotomy (LPM) approach.

Methods: Twenty-eight patients with malignant tumors, including squamous cell carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and mucoepidermoid carcinoma, underwent maxillectomy through the LPM approach.

Background: This study evaluated the outcomes of facial-submental artery island flap (FSAIF) for reconstruction of the hemitongue following cancer ablation in patients with early and middle-stage oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC).

Methods: In total, 122 patients with early and middle-stage OTSCC were divided into young, middle-aged, and elderly groups. The Adult Comorbidity Evaluation-27 (ACE-27) index was used to determine the presence of comorbidities.

Objective: To investigate the outcomes of patients with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the palate undergoing pedicled facial-submental artery island flap (FSIF) reconstruction following resection.

Patients And Methods: 41 patients with early stage disease and 9 patients with advanced-stage disease underwent radical excision and neck dissection. 37 IIb, 4 class IIa and 9 IIIb maxillary defects were reconstructed with FSIF, folded FSIF or folded FSIF with titanium mesh respectively.

Background: Reconstruction of upper labial myomucosal defects is surgically challenging.

Aims: We evaluated whether central defects could be repaired using bilateral, buccinator myomucosal advancement flaps (b-BMAFs).

Methods: We evaluated five patients with early-stage, minor salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinomas (low-grade [n = 2], intermediate-grade [n = 2], and high-grade [n = 1]) who underwent central, upper labial myomucosal reconstruction using b-BMAFs after cancer ablation.

Endoscopic techniques have been applied to oral and maxillofacial surgeries. Previous studies have proved their practicability in the treatment of osteomyelitis of the mandible and displaced residual roots in the maxillary sinus. In this report, two patients with dentigerous cysts in the maxillary sinus underwent endoscope-assisted curettage.

Objectives: Osteoradionecrosis of the mandible is a late radiation-induced complication, which is a major concern in survivors of head and neck cancer.

Study Design: In this study, we present a case of a patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma who developed extensive bilateral osteoradionecrosis of the ascending ramus of the mandible. After preoperative virtual surgical planning, the obtained data were used to fabricate patient-specific cutting templates.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and transmission mechanism(s) of mcr-1 in the gut flora of children. Faecal samples (n = 173) were obtained from non-diarrhoea patients at the Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, China). PCR-based analysis indicated that 17 isolates from 9.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of the polymyxin resistance gene in from environmental water sources in Hangzhou, China. Colistin-resistant bacteria were isolated from environmental water samples using an enrichment broth culture method, were screened for , and then were analyzed for the location and transferability of Isolates positive for were further examined to determine their susceptibility profiles and were screened for the presence of additional resistance genes. Twenty-three -positive isolates (16 , two , two , two , and one ) were isolated from 7/9 sampling locations; of those, eight -positive isolates also contained β-lactamase-resistance genes, eight contained , and 10 contained No -positive isolates were identified.
