[Metabonomics-a useful tool for individualized cancer therapy].

Metabonomics has developed rapidly in post-genome era, and becomes a hot topic of omics. The core idea of metabonomics is to determine the metabolites of relatively low-weight molecular in organisms or cells, by a series of analytical methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance, color spectrum and mass spectrogram, then to transform the data of metabolic pattern into useful information, by chemometric tools and pattern recognition software, and to reveal the essence of life activities of the body. With advantages of high-throughput, high-sensitivity and high-accuracy, metabolomics shows great potential and value in cancer individualized treatment.

Primary bone lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma presenting with spinal cord compression: a case report.

Unlabelled: Primary bone lymphoma is a rare disease, and the main pathological type is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The occurrence of follicular, marginal zone and lymphoplasmacytic lymphomas is rare. Vertebras are also sites that can be affected, and spinal cord compression is reported in 14% of patients with vertebral involvement.

Intraoperative radiotherapy in stage IIB adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix: a retrospective study.

Objectives: Adenocarcinoma (AC) of the uterine cervix has a poor prognosis and is usually fatal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome and toxicity of intraoperative electron beam radiation therapy (IOERT) in advanced AC.

Methods: Twenty-seven women were treated with IOERT.

Cancerous inhibitor of PP2A is targeted by natural compound celastrol for degradation in non-small-cell lung cancer.

Celastrol binds CIP2A and enhances CIP2A-CHIP interaction, leading to ubiquitination/degradation of CIP2A and inhibition of lung cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Celastrol potentiates cisplatin's efficacy by suppressing the CIP2A-Akt pathway, and therefore CIP2A inhibitors may represent novel therapeutics for cancer.

Dynamic changes and associated factors of clopidogrel resistance in patients after cerebral infarction.

Stroke victims often exhibit clopidogrel resistance (CR). This prospective study was undertaken to observe changes that influence CR in the secondary prevention of cerebral infarction (CI). The study included 56 cases at high risk of stroke (HRS), 147 cases of CI and 68 control subjects.

A meta-analysis of reference values of leptin concentration in healthy postmenopausal women.

Objective: There are numerous reports about the leptin concentration (LC) in postmenopausal women (PW). Changes in LC can elicit different clinical outcomes. We systematically analyzed the LC in PW.

Use of hospital appointment registration systems in China: a survey study.

Background: Hospitals have expressed no knowledge of patients' opinions regarding diversified appointment registration systems, despite efforts to develop novel appointment registration systems that assist patients and increase hospital efficiency. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the use of diversified appointment registration systems and explore the factors influencing patients' registration system choices.

Methods: A survey study using a questionnaire was conducted in West China Hospital in February 2012.

Lipoxin A4 ameliorates cerebral ischaemia/reperfusion injury through upregulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2.

Objectives: Lipoxin A4 (LXA4) is a potent anti-inflammatory mediator that exerts a neuroprotective effect following cerebral ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms. Upregulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is generally considered to reduce cerebral I/R injury.

Activation of ERK1/2 and Akt is associated with cisplatin resistance in human lung cancer cells.

Cisplatin is widely used for the treatment of solid tumours including small cell lung cancers, but its success is often compromised by relapse and resistance to further treatment. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and Akt are two major cell survival pathways that are upregulated and activated in lung cancer tissues. Phosphorylated ERK1/2 (p-ERK1/2) and Akt (p-Akt) can be further stimulated by chemotherapeutics in cancer cells.

Treatment results of incomplete chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced cervical cancer.

Objective: Regimens that combine chemotherapy and radiotherapy increase toxicity and compromise a patient's ability to adhere to the treatment plan. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of a partially completed chemoradiation regimen prescribed for locally advanced carcinoma of the cervix.

Methods: Medical records of 156 patients with locally advanced cervical cancer stage IIB-IVA who received chemoradiation with cisplatin (40 mg/m(2)) and 5-fluorouracil (500 mg/ m(2)) from October 2006 to October 2008 were collected.

Metastasis to the parotid region as an initial presentation of renal cell carcinoma: A case report.

Distant metastasis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) to the parotid region is extremely rare, particularly as an initial presentation. In the present study, we report a rare case of parotid region metastasis from RCC as an initial presentation in a 44-year-old female who presented with a painless lump in the right parotid region. Investigation revealed RCC in the left renal region and metastasis to the right iliac area.

Antioxidant phenolic compounds from Pu-erh tea.

Eight compounds were isolated from the water extract of Pu-erh tea and their structures were elucidated by NMR and MS as gallic acid (1), (+)-catechin (2), (−)-epicatechin (3), (−)-epicatechin-3-O-gallate (4), (−)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (5), (−)-epiafzelechin- 3-O-gallate (6), kaempferol (7), and quercetin (8). Their in vitro antioxidant activities were assessed by the DPPH and ABTS scavenging methods with microplate assays. The relative order of DPPH scavenging capacity for these compounds was compound 8 > compound 7 > compound 1 > compound 6 > compound 4 ≈ compound 5 > compound 2 > VC (reference) > compound 3, and that of ABTS scavenging capacity was compound 1 > compound 2 > compound 7 ≈ compound 8 > compound 6 > compound 5 > compound 4 > VC (reference) > compound 3.

Primary Ewing's sarcoma of vulva: a case report and a review of the literature.

Ewing sarcomas/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (ES/pPNET) are extremely rare in the vulva. A review of the literature reveals only 14 previously reported possible cases. Here we reported a case of primary extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma (EES) of the vulva in a 37-year-old woman.

Unexpected manganese(III) acetate-mediated reactions of β-enamino carbonyl compounds with 1-(pyridin-2-yl)-enones under mechanical milling conditions.

The solvent-free reactions of β-enamino carbonyl compounds with 1-(pyridin-2-yl)-enones in the presence of manganese(iii) acetate dihydrate unexpectedly afforded 2-acyl-3-aryl-6,7-dihydro-4(5H)-benzofuran derivatives under mechanical milling conditions.

Clinicopathologic characteristics and molecular subtypes of invasive papillary carcinoma of the breast: a large case study.

Purpose: Although patients with invasive papillary carcinoma (IPC) often have favorable prognoses, it remains unclear whether this special type of breast cancer represents a distinct morphological entity with its own biological features and clinical behavior distinct from those of invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and whether its four molecular subtypes are associated with different prognoses.

Methods: The study is a retrospective analysis of a large patient cohort from a single institution. 284 IPC samples were collected from January 2000 to May 2011.

Voice symptoms in patients with autoimmune disease: a cross-sectional epidemiological study.

Objective: To assess the prevalence and severity of voice symptoms in individuals with a diagnosis of autoimmune disease.

Study Design: Cross-sectional survey.

Setting: Study participants were recruited from a rheumatology tertiary referral clinic at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Factors associated with delayed tuberculosis diagnosis in China.

Background: Delays in the diagnosis of tuberculosis reflect a lack of access to care, and contribute to ongoing tuberculosis transmission in the community. The objective of this study was to evaluate the delay in tuberculosis testing and the associated risk factors in Shanghai, Shandong and Sichuan provinces in China.

Methods: A prospective cohort study of 765 culture-positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients registered between December 2006 and December 2008.

TNFα enhances cancer stem cell-like phenotype via Notch-Hes1 activation in oral squamous cell carcinoma cells.

Cancer stem-like cell (CSC; also known as tumor initiating cell) is defined as a small subpopulation of cancer cells within a tumor and isolated from various primary tumors and cancer cell lines. CSCs are highly tumorigenic and resistant to anticancer treatments. In this study, we found that prolonged exposure to tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), a major proinflammatory cytokine, enhances CSC phenotype of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells, such as an increase in tumor sphere-forming ability, stem cell-associated genes expression, chemo-radioresistance, and tumorigenicity.

Change in platelet levels during radiotherapy with concurrent and adjuvant temozolomide for the treatment of glioblastoma: a novel prognostic factor for survival.

Background: Radiotherapy plus concomitant and adjuvant temozolomide (RCAT) is now standard treatment for grade IV glioblastoma (GBM). We report the results from our 7 years experience of using RCAT, and the potential role of a change in platelet count as a prognostic factor.

Methods: We identified all patients with biopsy-proven GBM who received RCAT at the Royal Free Hospital between 2002 and 2009.

Bortezomib interferes with C-KIT processing and transforms the t(8;21)-generated fusion proteins into tumor-suppressing fragments in leukemia cells.

The boronic acid dipeptide bortezomib inhibits the chymotrypsin-like activity of the 26S proteasome and shows significant therapeutic efficacy in multiple myeloma. However, recent studies suggest that bortezomib may have more complex mechanisms of action in treating cancer. We report here that the endocytosis and lysosomal degradation of the receptor tyrosine kinase C-KIT are required for bortezomib- but not tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib-caused apoptosis of t(8;21) leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumor cells, suggesting that C-KIT may recruit an apoptosis initiator.

Botulinum toxin in masticatory muscles: short- and long-term effects on muscle, bone, and craniofacial function in adult rabbits.

Paralysis of the masticatory muscles using botulinum toxin (BTX) is a common treatment for cosmetic reduction of the masseters as well as for conditions involving muscle spasm and pain. The effects of this treatment on mastication have not been evaluated, and claims that the treatment unloads the jaw joint and mandible have not been validated. If BTX treatment does decrease mandibular loading, osteopenia might ensue as an adverse result.

Effect of socio-economic factors on delayed access to health care among Chinese cervical cancer patients with late rectal complications after radiotherapy.

Objectives: To determine the effect of socio-economic status (SES) on delayed access to medical treatment by Chinese cervical cancer patients who suffered from late rectal sequelae (LRS) after external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and intracavitary brachytherapy.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with LRS were interviewed for their SES, factors including age, residing district, religion, marital status, income, education, insurance and patient delay (the time interval from the onset of symptoms to the first medical consultation) and other factors such as weight, symptom duration and disease stage at diagnosis.

Results: One hundred and twenty nine patients were interviewed.

A new eudesmane sesquiterpene glucoside from Liriope muscari fibrous roots.

The screening of several Chinese medicinal herbs for nematocidal properties showed that the ethanol extract of Liriope muscari fibrous roots possessed significant nematocidal activity against the pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus). From the ethanol extract, a new constituent (1,4-epoxy-cis-eudesm-6-O-β-D-glucopyranoside) and three known glycosides [1β,6α-dihydroxy-cis-eudesm-3-ene-6-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (liriopeoside A), 1β,6β-dihydroxy-cis-eudesm-3-ene-6-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, and 1α,6β-dihydroxy-5,10-bis-epi-eudesm-4(15)-ene-6-O-β D-glucopyranoside] were isolated by bioassay-guided fractionation. The structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR and MS techniques.
