Article Synopsis
  • Interleukin-27 (IL-27) is a cytokine found in elevated levels in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and has anti-Mycobacterium tuberculosis properties in infected macrophages.
  • The study investigated how IL-27 enhances macrophage resistance to Mtb infection through experiments involving bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and macrophage cell lines, revealing that IL-27 treatment reduces macrophage apoptosis and inflammation.
  • The research suggests that IL-27 activates autophagy and modulates signaling pathways, specifically inhibiting TLR4/NF-κB and activating PI3K/AKT, to protect macrophages from damage caused by the Mtb strain H37Rv.

Peroxisome biogenesis involves two pathways: growth and division from pre-existing mature peroxisomes and de novo biogenesis from the endoplasmic reticulum, with a contribution from mitochondria, particularly in human peroxisome-deficient cells. However, the essential components that control peroxisome de novo biogenesis are largely unknown. Dual organelle localized ubiquitin ligase MARCH5 functions on peroxisomes to control pexophagy.

Ammonia (NH) is an important alkaline reactive nitrogen, which, as a precursor of fine particulate matter, raises public health issues. In this study, online NH, SO, NO, PM, and its water-soluble inorganic ions were detected to deduce the influence of NH on aerosol liquid water content (AWC) and aerosol pH, including the formation of water-soluble secondary ions in PM in winter in Changzhou, an ammonia-rich city in the Yangtze River Delta area in winter. The results showed that NH mainly existed in the form of NHNO and (NH)SO, and the remaining NH existed as NHCl.

In this study, the impact of acetylation on physicochemical, digestive behavior and fermentation characteristics of Cyperus esculentus polysaccharides (CEP) was investigated. Results indicated that the acetylation led the molecules to be more likely aggregated, followed by a higher crystallinity, a lower apparent viscosity and a higher ratio of G" to G' (tan δ). Importantly, the acetylated polysaccharides (ACEP) had a lower digestibility, but its molecular weight was lower than that of original polysaccharides (CEP) following a simulated saliva-gastrointestinal digestion.

THEMIS plays an indispensable role in T cells, but its mechanism of action has remained highly controversial. Using the systematic proximity labeling methodology PEPSI, we identify THEMIS as an uncharacterized substrate for the phosphatase SHP1. Saturated mutagenesis assays and mass spectrometry analysis reveal that phosphorylation of THEMIS at the evolutionally conserved Tyr34 residue is oppositely regulated by SHP1 and the kinase LCK.

Introduction: Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is characterised by decreased muscle mass, diminished muscle strength and/or reduced physical performance and a high percentage of body fat (PBF). Conventional-load resistance exercise (CRE) may be difficult for older people with SO owing to their declining physical functions. Low-load resistance exercise (LRE) combined with blood flow restriction (BFR; LRE-BFR) is a viable alternative to CRE for improving muscle mass and strength and potential exercise mode for managing SO.
