Article Synopsis
  • A novel method for recovering metallic silver and generating power was tested using bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) with cathodic reduction.
  • In experiments, both Ag(+) ions and Ag(I) thiosulfate complexes were successfully reduced on the cathode, with Ag(+) showing a faster reduction rate.
  • X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the metallic silver deposits had over 91% purity, and using simulated photographic wastewater demonstrated up to 95% efficiency in removing Ag(I).

A pilot-scale, membrane-free, bioelectrochemical system (BES) reactor (16L in volume) installed by five cathodes with different distance to anode was tested for the removal of copper. CuSO4 solution was used as catholyte and anaerobic microorganisms grew as anodic biocatalyst. In the reactor, Cu(II) was reduced and recovered as solid-state copper deposits on cathodes accompanied with power production.
