This study presents the design, synthesis, and comprehensive characterization of a novel series of D-π-A type malononitrile-derived chromophores, BTC-1-BTC-4. Combining various spectroscopic techniques, nonlinear Z-scan measurements, and quantum chemical calculations, we revealed the intricate relationship between nonlinear optical properties and the interplay of molecular structure, intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), and dipole moments (μ). Our experimental and computational findings corroborate that the polarization degree in the ground state, the charge separation in the excited state and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) collectively dictate the nonlinear optical properties of the compounds.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted comparing the effectiveness of two COVID-19 treatments: azvudine and nirmatrelvir/ritonavir, involving 576 patients with varying levels of treatment.
  • Results showed that while both treatments had similar symptoms, azvudine led to a quicker recovery from weakness, but nirmatrelvir/ritonavir was more effective in reducing mortality in severe cases.
  • Ultimately, azvudine is suggested for non-severe cases with weakness, while nirmatrelvir/ritonavir is recommended for severe cases due to its lower mortality rates, despite higher hospitalization costs and longer stays.

Glutamate ionotropic receptor kainate type subunit 3 (GRIK3) is a predominant excitatory neurotransmitter receptor in the mammalian brain. While it is known that GRIK3 is involved in normal neurophysiologic processes, its biological functions in tumor progression are still poorly understood due to limited investigation. In this study, we reported for the first time that GRIK3 expression was downregulated in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissues as compared to paracarcinoma tissues.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the clinical characteristics of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) PCR re-positivity after recovering from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Patients ( = 1391) from Guangzhou, China, who had recovered from COVID-19 were recruited between 7 September 2021 and 11 March 2022. Data on epidemiology, symptoms, laboratory test results and treatment were analysed.

Public health measures (such as wearing masks, physical distancing, and isolation) have significantly reduced the spread of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19), but the impact of public health measures on other respiratory infectious diseases is unclear. To assess the correlation between public health measures and the incidence of respiratory infectious diseases in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. We collected the data from the National Health and Construction Commission in China on the number of patients with six respiratory infectious diseases (measles, tuberculosis, pertussis, scarlet fever, influenza, and mumps) from 2017 to 2020 and assessed the correlation between public health measures and the incidence of respiratory infectious diseases.

Background: The clonal spread of multiple drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii is an emerging problem in China. We analysed the molecular epidemiology of Acinetobacter baumanni isolates at three teaching hospitals and investigated the risk factors, clinical features, and outcomes of hospital-acquired pneumonia caused by extensive drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (XDRAB) infection in Guangzhou, China.

Methods: Fifty-two A.

Background: The clonal spread of Acinetobacter baumannii is a global problem, and carbapenems, such as imipenem, remain the first-choice agent against A. baumannii. Using synergy to enhance the antibiotic activity of carbapenems could be useful.
