The activation of C-C bond of benzocyclobutenones under mild reaction conditions remains a challenge. We herein report a photoinduced catalyst-free regio-specific C1-C8 bond cleavage of benzocyclobutenones, enabling the generation of versatile ortho-quinoid ketene methides for aza-[4 + 2]-cycloaddition with imines, which offers a facile route to isoquinolinone derivatives, including seven family members of protoberberine alkaloids, gusanlung A, B, D, 8-oxotetrahydroplamatine, tetrahydrothalifendine, tetrahydropalmatine, and xylopinine. Furthermore, the catalytic enantioselective version of this strategy is also realized by merging synergistic photocatalysis and chiral Lewis acid catalysis.

The development of novel methods to enhance enzyme-carrier interactions in situ, at a feasible cost, and on a large scale is crucial for improving the stability and durability of current immobilized enzyme systems used in industrial settings. Here, a pioneering approach termed "silica-based inorganic glue" is proposed, which utilizes protein-catalyzed silicification to fix enzyme within porous matrix while preserving enzyme activity. This innovative strategy offers several key benefits, including conformational stabilization of enzymes, improved interactions between enzymes and the matrix, prevention of enzyme leakage, and mitigation of pore blocking.

In this study, a novel ultramicroporous pillar-layered Ni-LAP-NH [Ni(l-asp)(Pz-NH)] (l-asp = l-aspartic acid, Pz-NH = aminopyrazine) membranes on porous α-AlO tubes with high performance and good thermal stability was first fabricated using isostructural Ni-LAP[Ni(l-asp)(Pz)] (Pz = pyrazine) crystals as seeds. Utilizing the principle of reticular chemistry, here, we introduced the active amino side group into the Ni-LAP frameworks by replacing the pillar-layered ligand Pz with Pz -NH while maintaining the original Ni-LAP small pore size, and the amino side group induced a "steric hindrance" effect and the physical adsorption affinity, which synergistically delayed CO penetration. It was found that the preferential (111) orientation Ni-LAP-NH membrane (Z10) exhibited a high H/CO separation performance with a separation factor of 41.

The utilization of lanthanide (Ln) complexes in the realm of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) has garnered extensive interest, particularly in their role as luminescent materials or electron trappers. A series of gadolinium (Gd) complexes with energy levels of high HOMO/LUMO and different triplet state energies were designed and synthesized by introducing substituents with different electronic effects onto the pyrazolone derivative ligands. The ability to finely tune/balance the structure and rigidity of enzymes to realize both high enzymatic activity and long-term stability is highly desired but highly challenging. Herein, we propose the concept of the "silicazyme", where solid inorganic silica undergoes controlled hybridization with the fragile enzyme under moderate conditions at the single-enzyme level, thus enabling simultaneous structure augmentation, long-term stability, and high enzymatic activity preservation.
