Finite element (FE) models of the human head are important injury assessment tools but developing a high-quality, hexahedral-meshed FE head model without compromising geometric accuracy is a challenging task. Important brain features, such as the cortical folds and ventricles, were captured only in a handful of FE head models that were primarily developed from two meshing techniques, i.e.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is one of the most toxic mycotoxins with neurotoxicity. Human exposure to AFB1 via contaminated foodstuffs has been linked to the risk of cognitive impairment, which may contribute to the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of AD in relation to AFB1 exposure is not clear.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOsmotic energy conversion based on bio-inspired layered membranes has garnered significant interest. However, traditional biomass ion-selective membranes suffer from complex preparation, uneconomic nature, poor selectivity, and low power density. Here, we introduce scalable one-step in situ culture for nanofluidic membrane materials (GO/C-BC) composed of graphene oxide (GO), carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMC), and bacterial cellulose (BC).

However, even patients receiving guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) still struggle with poor cardiac function and high rates of readmission. Enhancing cardiac function in HF patients and reducing the occurrence of adverse events (AEs) remain critical challenges at present.

The cavities on the substrate are formed by metal assistant chemical etching, and the Ag-nanoplates in the cavities by galvanic cell deposition enhance the SERS performance effectively. Analytes in solution are adsorbed on Ag-nanoplates and located in hot spots, which enhance the SERS performance effectively.

Previous studies have shown that matrix metalloproteinases 19 (MMP19) was involved in TAAD formation, while the detailed role of MMP19 in TAAD pathogenesis and underlying mechanism remain unclear.
Methods: To investigate the role of MMP19 in the progression of TAAD, we generated global Mmp19 knockout mice, as well as VSMCs (vascular smooth muscle cells)-specific Mmp19 knockdown mice, and established a BAPN-induced TAAD model.
Background: Hypotension is a common side effect of propofol induction, and when severe, it is associated with adverse outcomes. Ultrasonography of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is a reliable indicator of the intravascular volume. This study investigated whether preoperative IVC ultrasound measurements could predict hypotension after propofol induction in patients undergoing colonoscopies.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLactate derived from aerobic glycolysis is crucial for DNA damage repair and chemoresistance. Nevertheless, it is frequently noted that cancer cells depend on glutaminolysis to replenish essential metabolites. Whether and how glutaminolysis might enhance lactate production and facilitate DNA repair in cancer cells remains unknown.

Purpose: Intestinal fibrous stenosis due to Crohn's disease (CD) is highly prevalent. Although several clinical risk factors for fibrous stenosis have been identified, such as perianal fistulizing disease, small bowel disease location, and deep mucosal ulceration, predicting fibrous stenosis remains challenging. The intestinal microbiota plays a crucial role in the development and progression of CD.

There is increasing evidence for involvement of the immune system in this disease. Adipokines have been reported to be critical immunoregulators in many clinical conditions, including gastrointestinal (GI) inflammatory diseases.

Studies have shown that variants in the A4GALT gene contribute to the p phenotype. Here, we report two novel compound heterozygous variants in the A4GALT gene in a Chinese woman with p phenotype and recurrent pregnancy loss.

Therefore, this study aimed to assess the causal relationship between BC and meningioma at the genetic level. Genetic instrumental variables (IVs) for BC were identified from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC), the Discovery Biology and Risk of Inherited Variants in Breast Cancer Consortium (DRIVE), the Collaborative Oncological Gene-environment Study (iCOGS), and 11 other BC genome-wide association studies (GWAS).

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 320 patients with breast cancer in Wuxi, China, from September 2023 to March 2024, who completed questionnaires about their demographic and clinical characteristics, the M.D.
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the primary precursor of disinfection products (DBPs) during chlorination. However, the compositional characteristics of DOM transformation during the chlorination process in different source waters and its relationship to cytotoxicity remain understudied. Here, we used high-resolution mass spectrometry to evaluate chlorination-induced molecular-level changes in DOM derived from different surface water sources.

It is widely accepted that overexposure to Mn leads to manganism, which has clinical symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease (PD), and is referred to as parkinsonism. Astrocytes have been reported to scavenge and degrade extracellular α-synuclein (α-Syn) in the brain.

Introduction: For patients with breast cancer receiving preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy with anthracyclines, there is an increased risk of postoperative myocardial injury due to the cardiotoxicity of the chemotherapeutic agents. The optimal intraoperative blood pressure regulation regimen for these patients is unclear. This study is being conducted to determine whether targeting mean arterial pressure (MAP) to 100%-120% of the patient's baseline blood pressure reduces the incidence of myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS) compared with targeting MAP to 80%-100%.
