Biofouling by the invasive golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei deleteriously affects artificial water systems, but few effective, environmentally friendly antifouling strategies exist. We propose ultrasound for control of this invasive mussel and report minimum exposure times to kill juveniles and adults at ultrasonic powers ranging 300-600 W from a fixed distance of 8.5 cm.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study tested various methods for extracting and analyzing SARS-CoV-2 from wastewater in the Greater Seattle Area, identifying that skimmed milk flocculation is the most reliable and feasible method for low-resource settings.
  • * While bag-mediated filtration had the highest volume tested, its low recovery rates indicate that choosing the right concentration method is critical for accurate detection of the virus.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common malignant primary cancer with high mortality. Previous studies have demonstrated that RNA binding proteins (RBPs) are involved in the biological processes of cancers, including hepatocellular cancer.

Methods: In this study, we aimed to identify the clinical value of RNA-binding proteins for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Lessons Learned: Apatinib combined with S-1 was not superior to other chemotherapy regimens as first-line therapy for advanced gastric cancer. There was a tendency for patients with lymph node metastasis to have prolonged median progression-free survival and median overall survival, compared with patients with liver metastasis.

Background: The best choice of first-line chemotherapy regimen for patients with metastatic gastric cancer is still debated.

The objective of this study was to investigate the molecular interaction and complex stability of four major cow's milk (CM) proteins (α-LA, β-LG, α -CA, and β-CA) with cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) using computational methods. The results of molecular docking analysis revealed that hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction were the main binding forces to maintain the stability of the C3G-CM protein complexes. Molecular dynamics simulation results showed that all complexes except for C3G-α -CA were found to reach equilibrium within 50 ns of simulation.

In order to improve the therapeutic efficacy and reduce the side effects of anticancer drugs, stimuli-responsive and biodegradable drug-delivery systems have attracted significant attention in the past three decades. Herein, we report acid-responsive and degradable polyphosphazene nano-prodrugs synthesized via a one-pot cross-linking reaction of 4-hydroxybenzhydrazide-modified doxorubicin (BMD) with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP). The phenol groups in the as-synthesized BMD exhibited a high reactivity towards HCCP and in the presence of a basic catalyst the determined drug loading ratio of the nanoparticles, denoted as HCCP-BMD, was up to 85.

The aim of this study was to explore the epidemiology of infection in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) in eastern China. Therefore, 287 primary CRC patients and 287 age-matched healthy control subjects were recruited to estimate the seroprevalence of and identify the risk factors of infection. Enzyme-linked immunoassays were used to test for anti- immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibodies.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the levels of illness perception and identify interrelations among the variables of illness perception, demographic, and health-related characteristics in a sample of rural Chinese adults with hypertension (HTN).

Design: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study using descriptive and correlation analysis.

Sample: It included 163 people diagnosed with HTN for at least 3 years who lived in two rural villages in Zhejiang Province of mainland China during 2014-2015.

Background: Periodontal tissue regeneration (PTR) is the ultimate goal of periodontal therapy. Currently, stem cell therapy is considered a promising strategy for achieving PTR. However, there is still no conclusive comparison that distinguishes clear hierarchies among different kinds of stem cells.

In recent years, increased social pressure and other factors have led to a surge in the number of people suffering from depression: studies show that quite a few people will experience major depression in their lifetime. Currently, it is widely believed that the internal cause of major depression is reduced levels of norepinephrine (NE) in brain tissue. Norepinephrine is very similar in structure and chemical properties to the other two catecholamine neurotransmitters, epinephrine (EP) and dopamine (DA).

Heavily doped polysilicon layers have been widely used in the fabrication of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). However, the investigation of high selectivity, anisotropy, and excellent uniformity of heavily doped polysilicon etching is limited. In this work, reactive ion etching of undoped and heavily doped polysilicon-based hydrogen bromide (HBr) plasmas have been compared.

Background: Neoantigens are newly formed antigens that have not been previously recognized by the immune system. They may arise from altered tumor proteins that form as a result of mutations. Although neoantigens have recently been linked to antitumor immunity in long-term survivors of cancers, such as melanoma and colorectal cancer, their prognostic and immune-modulatory role in many cancer types remains undefined.

The incidence of thyroid nodules has been increasing worldwide; however, there are currently no feasible and robust methods to differentiate malignant thyroid nodules from benign thyroid nodules. The present study aimed to establish a practical method to determine the malignancy of thyroid nodules. Reverse transcription‑quantitative PCR and western blot analyses were performed to compare the levels of long non‑coding RNA nuclear enriched abundant transcript 1 (NEAT1), microRNA (miR)‑9, miR‑124, PTEN and programmed cell death protein 6 (PDCD6) in the peripheral blood and thyroid tissue samples between patients with malignant and benign thyroid nodules.

The AT-rich interaction domain 1A (ARID1A) are frequently mutates across a broad spectrum of cancers. The majority of ARID1A mutations are inactivating mutations and lead to loss expression of the ARID1A protein. To date, clinical applicable targeted cancer therapy based on ARID1A mutational status has not been described.

Three-dimensional polyaniline (PANI) hydrogel was used as the conductive medium to improve the methane (CH) production from the anaerobic degradation of organics in wastewater. The porous structure and hydrophilic surface of the PANI hydrogel promoted the adhesion of the anaerobes. The PANI hydrogel existed as a conductive emeraldine base (EB) form with a conductivity of 0.

Aims: This study compared the bag-mediated filtration system (BMFS) and standard WHO two-phase separation methods for poliovirus (PV) environmental surveillance, examined factors impacting PV detection and monitored Sabin-like (SL) PV type 2 presence with withdrawal of oral polio vaccine type 2 (OPV2) in April 2016.

Methods And Results: Environmental samples were collected in Nairobi, Kenya (Sept 2015-Feb 2017), concentrated via BMFS and two-phase separation methods, then assayed using the WHO PV isolation algorithm and intratypic differentiation diagnostic screening kit. SL1, SL2 and SL3 were detected at higher rates in BMFS than two-phase samples (P < 0·05).

Background: To observe the effects of chalazion and its treatments on meibomian gland function and morphology in the chalazion area.

Methods: This nonrandomized, prospective observational clinical study included 58 patients (67 eyelids) who were cured of chalazion, including 23 patients (23 eyelids) treated with a conservative method and 35 patients (44 eyelids) treated with surgery. Infrared meibomian gland photography combined with image analysis by ImageJ software was used to measure the chalazion area proportion.

Tea waste biochar (TWBC) was prepared at 300℃, 500℃, and 700℃ under oxygen-limited atmosphere, and was characterized by elemental analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. TWBC was then used to remove tetracycline from aqueous solution. The influences of solid-to-liquid ratio, pH, ionic types, and strength were investigated.
