This study aims at modifying the synthesis method of preparing N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAM)/N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP)/Polyethylene glycol monoacrylate (PEG-A) polymeric nanoparticles encapsulating curcumin as a model drug. The optimal concentration of nanoparticle reagents was determined using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Curcumin nanoparticles mean hydrodynamic size was found to be 104 nm with zeta potential of 3 ± 13 mV.

Introduction: Systemic drug application for the treatment of inner ear diseases is restricted because of the blood-labyrinthine barrier and the limited blood supply to the inner ear. Local drug delivery to the inner ear can be an alternative method to overcome the problems with systemic application. The purpose of the present study was to describe the anatomic orientation of the round window membrane (RWM) and to examine the use of a microendoscope for transtympanic drug delivery to the RWM in the chinchilla animal model.

Over the past 4 decades, the surgical techniques of liver transplantation (LTx) have permanently evolved and been modified. Among these, the modified piggyback (MPB) technique by Belghiti offers specific advantages. The objective of this study was to present our single-center experience with the MPB technique in 500 cases.

Background: Despite substantial improvements in intra- and postoperative management of extended hemihepatectomy as the curative option for treatment of central liver tumors, the high morbidity and mortality rates accompanying the procedure still represent major obstacles. Mesohepatectomy preserves up to 35% more functional liver tissue than extended hepatectomy, but it has not been widely applied, perhaps because of its complexity as a resection method.

Study Design: Forty-eight consecutive patients (29 men and 19 women) with centrally located liver tumors underwent mesohepatectomy.

The mainstay of treatment for blunt or sharp liver trauma is conservative in 50%-80% of cases. When surgery is indicated, it is demanding and associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Felt has been used extensively in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery to seal stitches and exposed surfaces.

Pancreas transplantation (PTx) is being applied with increasing frequency in the treatment of diabetes mellitus Type 1 and selected cases of Type 2. It is known that PTx can consistently establish normoglycemic insulin-independent state. Due to the increased use of different PTx models in rats for studying the metabolic function of the transplanted pancreas, reviewing the various techniques in PTx seemed to be necessary.

Partial cholecystectomy (PC) is an alternative choice to standard cholecystectomy in situations with increased risk of Calot's components injury. We reported our experience with the patients treated with PC and reviewed the literature. Fifty-four patients with complex acute cholecystitis underwent PC, including conventional partial cholecystectomy (CPC; n = 48) and laparoscopic partial cholecystectomy (LPC; n = 6).

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors which can help to predict operative mortality before performing the operation, and afterwards.

Methods: The study population consisted of 504 patients (91 women and 413 men) who underwent primary isolated coronary artery bypass surgery from December 1997 to September 1999 by the same surgeon in a referral center in Tehran, Iran. Perioperative data were gathered and analyzed both in a univariate and multivariate model.
