Silk gland genes of Bombyx mori can have strict spatial expression patterns, which impact their functions and silk quality. However, our understanding of their regulation mechanisms is currently insufficient. To address this, the middle silk gland (MSG) and posterior silk gland (PSG) of the silkworm were investigated.

Osteoporosis is a common complication accompanied by spinal cord injury (SCI) occurrence. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been proved to play a crucial role in the progression of osteoporosis, but their regulating mechanism is unclear. The present study investigated miRNA-19b-3p level in SCI rats induced by modified Allen method, as well as the role of miRNA-19b-3p in osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs).

In the study, 28 samples of Radix Tinosporae were quantitatively analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography, and their analgesic activities were investigated via abdominal writhing tests on mice. Three genetic algorithms (GA) based approaches including partial least square regression, radial basis function neural network, and support vector regression (SVR) were established to construct QCAR models of R.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/MS) based metabonomics approach was applied to characterize the aging of rats, and the anti-aging effect of total flavones of Epimedium (TFE), a traditional Chinese medicine, has also been investigated. Serum samples collected from 4, 10, 18 and 24 month-old rats and TFE-administered rats have been profiled by LC/MS. Thirty age-related endogenous metabolites were discovered by partial least squares (PLS) and Hotelling's T(2) control chart, among which 25 metabolites were structurally identified by MS(n) analysis and ten of them were further confirmed via authentic chemicals.

Forty septic rats receiving cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) were divided into the surviving group and nonsurviving group on day 6, while 20 sham-operated rats served as the control group. Serum samples were collected from septic and sham-operated rats at 12 h after surgery and analyzed using (1)H NMR spectroscopy.

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance based metabonomic analyses was performed on urine from rats aged 4, 10, 18 and 24 months, and rats administered with TFE. By multivariate analysis, 26 characteristic resonances were found to be highly related with the age of rats, and ten of them were structurally postulated as creatinine, lactate, alanine, acetate, acetone, succinate, allantoin, methylamine, dimethylamine and trimethylamine-N-oxide; these metabolites involve creatinine metabolites, aliphatic amines metabolites and some important intermediates or end products of energy metabolism.

Metabonomics, as a newly developed technique, is expected to be a powerful technique in clinical diagnosis. Metabonomics-based diagnosis involves the global metabolic analysis of body-fluids, determination of biomarkers by multivariate statistic analysis, and establishemen of mathematic models for clinical diagnosis with the aid of pattern recognition. This article reviews the adoption of various analytical and computational strategies, application of metabonomics in clinical diagnosis, and potential challenges and development trends.

Our goal is to establish an early, rapid and efficient approach for prognostic evaluation of sepsis.
Methods: Forty-five septic rats, induced by cecal ligation and puncture, were divided into surviving (n=23) and nonsurviving group (n=22) on day 6.
Background/aims: Hepatitis B virus transgenic mice (HBV-Tg mice) have been widely used as animal models in the study of pathogenesis and control of hepatitis B. It is important for the evaluation of such animal models to define the physiological differences between HBV-Tg and wild-type mice. The aim of this research was to investigate whether the integrated system biology approach that combines proteomics and metabonomics describes the physiological changes and provides new insights into the pathogenesis of the early stages of HBV infection.

This study proposed a metabonomics-based diagnostic approach for OSCC and its precancerous lesions, including oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral leukoplakia (OLK). Saliva samples were collected from patients and healthy donors, and HPLC/MS analysis was performed to acquire metabolic profiles.
