Ulcerative colitis (UC), a prevalent form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), presents a significant clinical challenge due to the lack of optimal therapeutic strategies. Emerging evidence suggests that fibroblast growth factor 20 (FGF20) may play a crucial role in mitigating UC symptoms, though the mechanistic underpinnings remain elusive. In this study, a mouse model of UC was established using dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) to investigate the potential role of FGF20.

Article Synopsis
  • Liver injury can lead to serious hepatic diseases, causing significant global health issues, and both autophagy and SIRT1 have protective roles against such injuries.
  • Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) was found to significantly reduce liver damage in acute liver injury models, lowering key liver enzyme levels and inflammatory cytokines.
  • The study suggests that FGF21's protective effects are linked to increased autophagy via SIRT1 upregulation, highlighting a potential therapeutic mechanism for alleviating liver damage.

Regeneration of a part of the diseased liver after surgical resection is mainly achieved by the proliferation of the remaining healthy liver cells. However, in case of extreme loss of liver cells or in the final stages of chronic liver disease, most liver cells are depleted or lose their ability to proliferate. Therefore, to foster liver regeneration, it is of great clinical and scientific significance to improve the survival and proliferation ability of residual hepatocytes.
