Article Synopsis
  • Follicle development is vital for female fertility, focusing on the roles of germinal vesicle (GV) oocytes and their maturation to metaphase II (MII), influenced by granulosa cells.
  • The study examined 3D chromatin organization in granulosa cells from GV and MII follicles, revealing distinct patterns of gene activation and changes in topologically associating domains (TADs) as oocytes mature.
  • Findings highlight the importance of genome organization in granulosa cells for reproductive health, potentially informing new strategies to boost success rates in assisted reproductive technologies like IVF.

Avian ovaries develop asymmetrically apart from prey birds, with only the left ovary growing more towards functional organ. Here, we analyze over 135,000 cells from chick's left and right ovaries at six distinct embryonic developmental stages utilizing single-cell transcriptome sequencing. We delineate gene expression patterns across 15 cell types within these embryo ovaries, revealing side-specific development.
