Bound state in the continuum (BIC) has been considered a promising strategy to reduce fabrication complexity and radiative loss. Despite the successful demonstration of many BIC-based configurations, their mode confinement is comparable to conventional dielectric waveguides. Even though plasmonics with strong light localization have been introduced into BICs, the intrinsic ohmic loss is still a facing challenge to be conquered.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study tested whether Intelligent Hypertension Excellence Centers (iHEC) improve blood pressure control in older patients by comparing traditional treatment with a remote management model over 12 months.
  • - Results showed that the intervention group had a 4.2 mmHg lower systolic blood pressure and a higher BP control rate of 60.2%, compared to 48.1% in the control group.
  • - Patients in the iHEC group also experienced a lower rate of excessive blood pressure lowering, with only 3.8% affected, highlighting the benefits of remote monitoring and support.

Article Synopsis
  • SUZ12, a core component of the polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2), is found to be overexpressed in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), correlating with worse clinicopathological features and a poorer prognosis.
  • Experimental methods including immunohistochemical staining, qRT-PCR, and western blotting were used to assess SUZ12 expression and investigate its biological functions through both in vitro and in vivo experiments.
  • The study concludes that SUZ12 acts as an oncogene in LUAD by promoting cell growth and invasion while repressing apoptosis, possibly through direct interaction with the Bax promoter and influencing related signaling pathways.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study involved whole-exome sequencing of 476 cases to discover candidate genes, leading to the identification of variants in the KCNJ10 gene, which were found in 3.07% of patients.
  • * KCNJ10 variants were linked to milder PKD symptoms and impaired potassium channel function, impacting neuronal excitability and resulting in motor coordination issues in a mouse model, suggesting a possible genetic basis for PKD.

Purpose: This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive molecular epidemiology study of major HIV-1 subtypes in developed Eastern China (Zhejiang Province).

Methods: Plasma samples and epidemiological information were collected from 4180 newly diagnosed HIV-1 positive patients in Zhejiang Province in 2021. Pol sequences were obtained to determine the subtypes via multiple analytical tools.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study reviewed 14 research papers and found no significant correlation between adiponectin levels and the risk of ischemic stroke or overall patient prognosis, indicating high levels do not affect stroke incidence or survival rates.
  • * The analysis did reveal considerable variability in the results, suggesting that differences in study design and methodology could account for the conflicting findings, reinforcing that adiponectin may not serve as a reliable biomarker for assessing stroke risk or predicting outcomes.

Background: The present study aimed to develop a reliable and straightforward Nomogram by integrating various parameters to accurately predict the likelihood of early neurological deterioration (END) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS).

Methods: Acute ischemic stroke patients from Shaoxing People's Hospital, Shanghai Yangpu District Shidong Hospital, and Shanghai Fifth People's Hospital were recruited based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The primary outcome was END.

The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in the intestines of infants and the factors affecting their distribution. Breast milk and infant stool samples were collected from nine full-term, healthy mother-infant pairs. The bacterial distribution and various types of ARGs present in the samples were analyzed using metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

Background: Angioleiomyoma is a benign lesion of mesenchymal origin, which always occurs in the uterine system. Pathologically, angioleiomyoma is usually composed of well-differentiated smooth muscle cells with few mitotic features. However, primary intracranial angioleiomyoma represents an exceedingly rare tumor, since the first case reported in 1994.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines pre-treatment drug resistance (PDR) in newly diagnosed HIV-1 individuals in Wenzhou, China, finding a total PDR prevalence of 6.5% for any antiretroviral drug.
  • - Among specific drug classes, the highest resistance was noted for non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) at 4.1%, while resistance rates for nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), protease inhibitors (PIs), and integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) were significantly lower.
  • - The findings suggest a need for more non-NNRTI-based ART treatments and emphasize the importance of genotypic resistance testing prior to starting

Using computer vision technology to estimate pig live weight is an important method to realize pig welfare. But there are two key issues that affect pigs' weight estimation: one is the uneven illumination, which leads to unclear contour extraction of pigs, and the other is the bending of the pig body, which leads to incorrect pig body information. For the first one, Mask R-CNN was used to extract the contour of the pig, and the obtained mask image was converted into a binary image from which we were able to obtain a more accurate contour image.

We investigated the clinical characteristics of primary aldosteronism (PA) screened from patients with hypertension in China. The participants were hypertensive patients who were suspected of PA and registered in the China Primary Aldosteronism Prospective Study. Plasma aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) was used as the screening test.

Background: Diagnosis and severity assessment of tinnitus are mostly based on the patient's descriptions and subjective questionnaires, which lacks objective means of diagnosis and assessment bases, the accuracy of which fluctuates with the clarity of the patient's description. This complicates the timely modification of treatment strategies or therapeutic music to improve treatment efficacy.

New Method: We employed a novel random convolutional kernel-based method for electrocardiogram (ECG) signal analysis to identify patients' emotional states during Music Tinnitus Sound Therapy (Music-TST) sessions.

Background: Hypertension is widely acknowledged as a significant contributory factor to the heightened risk of intracranial aneurysm rupture. Nevertheless, the impact of hypertension management on the outcomes subsequent to aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH), particularly concerning the severity of aSAH, remains an underexplored area.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis using data from a prospectively multicentre cohort of 4545 patients with aSAH in China.

  • This study examined how the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD) is connected to cognitive impairment and changes in serum levels of uric acid (UA) and homocysteine (Hcy).
  • It involved 74 patients with PD, using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to categorize their cognitive function, alongside a control group of 60 individuals without PD.
  • Results showed that patients with cognitive impairment had lower UA and higher Hcy levels, with UA being a potential protective factor and Hcy a risk factor for cognitive decline in PD.

The subpixel target detection in hyperspectral image processing persists as a formidable challenge. In this paper, we present a novel subpixel target detector termed attention-based sparse and collaborative spectral abundance learning for subpixel target detection in hyperspectral images. To help suppress background during subpixel target detection, the proposed method presents a pixel attention-based background sample selection method for background dictionary construction.

Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) enables knowledge transfer from a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain. However, UDA performance often relies heavily on the accuracy of source domain labels, which are frequently noisy or missing in real applications. To address unreliable source labels, we propose a novel framework for extracting robust, discriminative features via iterative pseudo-labeling, queue-based clustering, and bidirectional subdomain alignment (BSA).
