The priming effect (PE) is recognized as an important mechanism influencing organic matter transformation in aquatic systems. The land-ocean aquatic continuum (LOAC) has received large quantities of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from various sources, which is an ideal interface for PE research. Here, we investigated the PE process by utilizing such a coastal environment to explore the turnover of DOM in the LOAC system.

Gold nanorods (GNRs) as plasmonic metal nanoparticles are valuable for optical applications due to their tunable plasmonic properties. However, conventional colloidal GNRs face significant optical instability during storage, which limits their practical use. In this work, we developed a highly dispersible GNR powder using an octadecyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted freeze-drying method, preserving the optical and chemical sensing properties of GNRs for over 4 months.

The BiSe family can exhibit many intriguing topological insulator properties, including a narrow bandgap and strong surface states, which show excellent nonlinear optical properties. Thinning bulk BiSe family materials to create a low-cost photoelectric modulation device and explaining the mechanisms of nonlinear optical differences in different types of materials remain challenges. Based on liquid-phase exfoliation technology and tapered fiber, this work prepared optoelectronic modulation devices for various samples within the BiSe family, quantitatively compared their nonlinear optical properties, and analyzed the sources of differentiation using the occupied and unoccupied multiband structure theory.

The introduction of surfactants to stabilize colloidal citrate-reduced gold nanoparticles (prevent aggregation) is usually used in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. However, the surfactants have many drawbacks for SERS applications, such as increasing the SERS background and blocking surface active sites. Here, we develop a surfactant-free method to stabilize colloidal cit-AuNPs based on alkali regulation, and this method can prevent gold nanoparticle aggregation under different harsh treatments, including ligand modification, centrifugation-based washing/enrichment, and salt addition.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is one of the most common genetic metabolic diseases, especially among newborns. Traditional clinical examination of newborn blood samples for PKU is invasive, laborious, and limited to hospitals and healthcare facilities. We reported herein a SERS-based sensor array with three thiophenolic nanoreceptors built on a patterned nanorod vertical array for rapid and inexpensive detection of characteristic volatile biomarkers indicative of PKU in the urine and accurate classification of newborn baby patients all performed on a hand-held SERS spectrophotometer.

BK7 glass, with its outstanding mechanical strength and optical performance, plays a crucial role in many cutting-edge technological fields and has become an indispensable and important material. These fields have extremely high requirements for the surface quality of BK7 glass, and any small defects or losses may affect its optical performance and stability. However, as a hard and brittle material, the processing of BK7 glass is extremely challenging, requiring precise control of machining parameters to avoid material fracture or excessive defects.

To investigate the changes in neuronal lipid droplet (LD) accumulation and lipid metabolism after acute spinal cord injury (SCI), we established a rat model of compressive SCI. Oil Red O staining, BODIPY 493/503 staining, and 4-hydroxynonenal immunofluorescence staining were performed to determine overall LD accumulation, neuronal LD accumulation, and lipid peroxidation. Lipidomics was conducted to identify the lipid components in the local SCI microenvironment.

Article Synopsis
  • Thrombosis significantly contributes to cardiovascular diseases and fatalities, with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) being the preferred treatment for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), though logistical challenges exist in remote areas.
  • Preoperative thrombolysis emerges as an essential alternative in these settings, requiring identification of safe and effective thrombolytic agents.
  • The study tested Urokinase, Alteplase, and rhTNK, finding rhTNK to be the most effective with minimal adverse effects and the lowest bleeding rate, positioning it as the ideal choice for AMI treatment.

Ultrasound examination is becoming the most popular medical imaging modality because of its low cost and high safety profile. Ultrasound contrast agents enhance the scattering of sound waves, which can improve the clarity and resolution of images. Nanoparticle Ultrasound contrast agents have the characteristics of a large specific surface area and a modifiable surface, which can increase drug loading capacity, prolong circulation time, and enable drug enrichment in specific organs or tissues.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as the hole-selective contact have achieved remarkable success in iodine-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs), while their impact on bromine-based PSCs is limited due to the poor perovskite crystallization behavior and mismatched energy level alignment. Here, a highly efficient SAM of (2-(3,6-diiodo-9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl)phosphonic acid (I-2PACz) is employed to address these challenges in FAPbBr-based PSCs. The incorporation of I atoms into I-2PACz not only releases tensile stress within FAPbBr perovskite, promoting oriented crystallization and minimizing defects through halogen-halogen bond, but also optimizes the energy levels alignment at hole-selective interface for enhanced hole extraction.

Bismaleimide (BMI) is often used as the cross-linking reagent in Diels-Alder (D-A)-type intrinsic self-healing materials (DISMs) to promote the connectivity of damaged surfaces based on reversible D-A bond formation on the molecular scale. Until now, although DISMs have exhibited great potential in the applications of various sensors, electronic skin, and artificial muscles, it is still difficult to prepare DISMs with satisfactory self-healing abilities and high tensile strengths and strains at the same time, thus largely limiting their applications in self-healing anticorrosive coatings. Herein, symmetrical trimaleimide (TMI) was successfully synthesized, and trimaleimide-structured D-A self-healing polyurethane (TMI-DA-PU) was prepared via the reversible D-A reaction (cycloaddition of furan and maleimide).

The N-Spermidine/spermine acetyltransferase (SSAT) serves as the rate-limiting enzyme in the polyamine metabolism pathway, specifically catalyzing the acetylation of spermidine, spermine, and other specific polyamines. The source of its enzymatic selectivity remains elusive. Here, we used quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics simulations combined with various technologies to explore the enzymatic mechanism of SSAT for endogenous polyamines from an atomic perspective.

Salt stress severely limits the growth and yield of wheat in saline-alkali soil. While nanozymes have shown promise in mitigating abiotic stress by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plants, their application in alleviating salt stress for wheat is still limited. This study synthesized a highly active nanozyme catalyst known as ZnPB (Zn-modified Prussian blue) to improve the yield and quality of wheat in saline soil.
