Renewable electricity-powered electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMFOR) to FDCA offers a green and sustainable approach to producing an essential monomer for bio-polymers, provided that a highly efficient electrocatalyst is present. Herein, we show that the doping of scandium (Sc) into an NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst (Sc-NiFe-LDH) considerably promotes HMFOR by enhancing the formation of high-valence Ni-O active sites, facilitating electron transport and HMF adsorption and suppressing the oxygen evolution reaction. In the presence of the Sc-NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst, an FDCA faradaic efficiency and selectivity of 96.

Photocatalytic hydrogen production from water is a promising method to obtain clean energy in the future. In this work, the sulfated TiO2 photocatalyst is successfully constructed in situ via a soft-templated method for photocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen. The content of sulfate species in TiO2 can be tuned by changing the amount of the surfactant.

Single imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) is commonly used as a template to prepare layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with specific morphology to improve the performance of materials. Herein, the Co ion in ZIF-67 is partially substituted by Ni to obtain the dodecahedron bimetallic imidazolate framework (CoNi-ZIF). Subsequently, using bimetallic CoNi-ZIF as the sacrificial template, CoNi-LDH hierarchical hollow cage structures with wrinkled nanosheet arrays are synthesized at room temperature and in aqueous solution by an inexpensive and environment friendly surfactant-free approach.
