Article Synopsis
  • Cancer remains a leading cause of death globally, prompting extensive research into effective therapies, particularly involving gut microbiota.
  • A study isolated four bacterial strains (BY38, BY40, BY43, BY45) from healthy individuals and cancer patients, which showed significant inhibition of ovarian and colorectal cancer cell growth.
  • The bacteria belong to the genus Bacillus and may induce cancer cell death through apoptosis, indicating their potential as new anticancer agents.

Liver organogenesis begins with hepatic precursors in the foregut endoderm, followed by hepatoblast specification, differentiation, outgrowth, and maturation for the formation of functional hepatocytes. Although several signaling pathways and critical factors that regulate liver specification, differentiation, and proliferation have been identified, little is known about how liver maturation is regulated. Here, we used a screen for mutations affecting liver development in zebrafish and identified a mutant that exhibits a specific defect in liver maturation.
