High-capacity communication networks are built to provide high throughput and low latency to accommodate the growing demand for bandwidth. However, the provision of these features is subject to a robust underlying network, which can provide high capacity with maximum reliability in terms of the system's connection availability. This work optimizes an existing 2D spectral-spatial optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) passive optical network (PON) to maximize connection availability while maintaining desirable communication capacity and capital expenditure.

Article Synopsis
  • * Research on zebrafish embryos showed that BP2 exposure causes various nervous system impairments, including hypoactivity and abnormal brain structure. It also reduces dopamine levels and disrupts neurocyte growth and survival.
  • * The study revealed that the negative effects of BP2 are linked to estrogen-dependent signaling, particularly involving specific estrogen receptors, highlighting the potential mechanisms of BP2's neurodevelopmental toxicity.

This study aims to present a simplified bit-class probabilistic shaping (PS) strategy based on power domain multiplexing (PDM) systems. In this scheme, we employ bit-weighted distribution matching (BWDM) to achieve PS. By ingeniously applying the process of signal superposition, the low-complexity bit-class PS scheme requires encoding of only a small number of bits in the low-power two quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signal, enhancing the quality of the transmitted signal with simple operations.

Article Synopsis
  • This paper introduces a new modulation technique called power domain superposition modulation, utilizing both dimensional level transformation and 5D constellation shaping.
  • It enhances data transmission by geometrically shaping a 5D constellation using a stacked triangular pyramid structure.
  • Experimental results show that this new method outperforms traditional 2D-32QAM by achieving a 0.7 dB gain at high optical power and a 0.4 dB sensitivity gain at a specific bit error rate.

The present work introduces a four-dimensional probability constellation mapping OFDM optical transmission system based on a two-dimensional inverse fast Fourier transform (2D-IFFT). A four-dimensional constellation structure employing color coding is designed, amalgamating geometric shaping with probability shaping to enhance the constellation figure of merit (CFM). Successful transmission of OFDM signals at 51.

Dihydro-β-ionone, a high-value compound with distinctive fragrance, is widely utilized in the flavor and fragrance industries. However, its low abundance in plant sources poses a significant challenge to its application through traditional extraction methods. Development of an enzyme cascade reaction with artificial design offers a promising alternative.

Tris (2,6-dimethylphenyl) phosphate (TDMPP), a novel organic phosphorus flame retardant (OPFR), has been found to have estrogenic activity. Estrogens are critical in regulating various biological responses during liver development. However, the effects of TDMPP on zebrafish liver development remain largely unexplored.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of transrectal drainage tubes (TDTs) in preventing postendoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) coagulation syndrome (PECS) after colorectal ESD procedures.
  • A multicenter randomized controlled trial included 224 patients and compared outcomes between those with TDTs and those without.
  • Results showed a significant reduction in PECS incidence among patients using TDTs (6.25%) compared to those who did not (17.86%), particularly benefiting females and those with tumor sizes less than 4 cm.

Background And Aims: Many studies of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (g-GISTs) following endoscopic resection (ER) have typically focused on tumor size, with most tumors at low risk of aggressiveness after risk stratification. There have been few systematic studies on the oncologic outcomes of intermediate- or high-risk g-GISTs after ER.

Methods: From January 2014 to January 2020, we retrospectively collected patients considered at intermediate- or high-risk of g-GISTs according to the modified NIH consensus classification system.

Background: CircRNAs are a class of noncoding RNAs with tissue- and development-specific expression characteristics. In many mammals, primordial follicle development begins in the embryonic stage. However, the study of circRNAs in primordial follicle development in mice has not been reported.

Dihydro-β-ionone is a common type of ionone used in the flavor and fragrance industries because of its characteristic scent. The production of flavors in microbial cell factories offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to accessing them, independent of extraction from natural sources. However, the native pathway of dihydro-β-ionone remains unclear, hindering heterologous biosynthesis in microbial hosts.

Background: Gastric subepithelial tumors (SETs) may harbor potential malignancy. Although it is well recognized that large SETs should be resected, the precise treatment strategy remains controversial. Compared to surgical resection, endoscopic resection (ER) has many advantages; however, ER of SETs in the cardia is challenging.

C13-apocarotenoids are naturally derived from the C9-C10 (C9'-C10') double-bond cleavage of carotenoids by carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases (CCDs). As high-value flavors and fragrances in the food and cosmetic industries, the sustainable production of C13-apocarotenoids is emerging in microbial cell factories by the carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase 1 (CCD1) subfamily. However, the commercialization of microbial-based C13-apocarotenoids is still limited by the poor performance of CCD1, which severely constrains its conversion efficiency from precursor carotenoids.

  • The study aimed to validate and refine the Zhongshan colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (CR-ESD) score model, which assesses the technical difficulty of CR-ESD procedures.
  • A multicenter analysis involving 548 patients was conducted to validate the original model and develop an updated scoring system based on identified risk factors.
  • The new scoring model improved prediction accuracy, showing better performance in categorizing cases into difficulty levels, making it a more effective option than the original.

Background: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has been widely adopted in treating rectal neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). However, clinical outcomes in rectal NETs after ESD with different resection margin status remain scanty, particularly in patients with positive resection margins. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes of ESD in rectal NET based on the resection margin status.

In this study, we studied the biochemical characterization of flavone synthase I from Daucus carota (DcFNS I) and applied it with flavonoid 6-hydroxylase from Scutellaria baicalensis (SbCYP) to convert flavanones to flavones. The recombinant DcFNS I was expressed in the form of the glutathione-S-transferase fusion protein. Rather than taxifolin, naringenin, pinocembrin, and eriodictyol were accepted as substrates.

On-chip optical communications are in increasingly demand for low-loss, small-footprint and power-efficient waveguiding solutions in the telecom band. However, most integrated optical circuits suffer from high propagation loss and low integration degree. Through manipulating the valley-dependent topological phase of light, we have experimentally demonstrated both robust optical transport and electrical modulation of lightwaves at telecom wavelengths in the valley photonic crystals.

Pseudoionone is a valuable intermediate for the flavor industry. However, few attempts have been made to synthesize pseudoionone using biotechnology. In this work, an Escherichia coli strain harboring both the isopentenol utilization pathway (IUP) and mevalonate (MVA) pathway was engineered for the production of the pseudoionone precursor lycopene, which increased the titer of lycopene to approximately 20-fold the yield obtained by the original MEP pathway.
