Programmed necrosis/necroptosis greatly contributes to the pathogenesis of cardiac disorders including myocardial infarction, ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and heart failure. However, the fundamental mechanism underlying myocardial necroptosis, especially the mitochondria-dependent death pathway, is poorly understood. Synaptotagmin-1 (Syt1), a Ca sensor, is originally identified in nervous system and mediates synchronous neurotransmitter release.

Article Synopsis
  • * Synaptotagmin-7 (Syt7) is significantly upregulated in heart cells affected by Ang II and contributes to cardiac hypertrophy by inhibiting autophagy.
  • * MicroRNA (miR)-93 is involved in regulating Syt7 expression, showing protective effects against hypertrophy and suggesting a potential therapeutic pathway involving miR-93, Syt7, and autophagy in heart disease treatment.

Schisandrin B (Sch-B), the most abundant active ingredient of the fruit of Schisandra chinensis, has been proposed to have antioxidant, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory effects. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of Sch-B on differentiation of T helper cells (Th). Using mouse splenic lymphocytes stimulated with concanavalin A (Con A) in vitro and ex vivo as inflammation models, we found that Sch-B significantly inhibited secretion of Th1 and Th17 related cytokines, such as IFN-γ and IL-17.
