Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the surgical safety and survival outcomes for patients with initially unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) after conversion therapy using real-world clinical data.
  • A total of 2984 patients were analyzed, with 38 achieving successful conversion to surgical resection; notable outcomes included a high objective response rate (52.6% to 78.9% depending on the criteria) and a 1-year disease-free survival rate of 91.4% for direct surgery compared to 86.8% for conversion surgery.
  • The findings suggest that conversion therapy can be a safe and effective treatment option, with a small number of uHCC patients converting to radical resection and demonstrating significant survival benefits

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the effects of lead pollution alone and in combination with nanoplastics on red drum fish, highlighting that nanoplastics increase lead accumulation in the fish muscles, leading to greater toxicity.
  • - Fish exposed to lead pollution (p07) primarily detoxified lead through cellular renewal, while under combined pollution with nanoplastics (m07), detoxification involved more complex processes like apoptosis and endocytosis.
  • - Recovery strategies also differed: under lead-only conditions, recovery relied on cell growth and antioxidants, whereas in the presence of nanoplastics, the focus was on protein synthesis and lipid metabolism.

As a critical component in mechanical systems, the operational status of rolling bearings plays a pivotal role in ensuring the stability and safety of the entire system. However, in practical applications, the fault diagnosis of rolling bearings often encounters limitations due to the constraint of sample size, leading to suboptimal diagnostic accuracy. This article proposes a rolling bearing fault diagnosis method based on an improved denoising diffusion probability model (DDPM) to address this issue.

Background: Skin flap transplantation is used to effectively reconstruct defects of the hand and foot skin and soft tissues. We here investigated the effect of the PF127/bleomycin (BLM) hydrogel on the extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling of skin flaps and the underlying mechanism, thereby providing a new reference point for personalized flap modification and overcoming abrasion resistance- and stability-associated difficulties.

Methods: The appropriate PF127/BLM concentration was selected based on the gelation time and drug release curve.

Infrared target detection is widely used in industrial fields, such as environmental monitoring, automatic driving, etc., and the detection of weak targets is one of the most challenging research topics in this field. Due to the small size of these targets, limited information and less surrounding contextual information, it increases the difficulty of target detection and recognition.

Nanoplastic pollution typically exhibits more biotoxicity to marine organisms than microplastic pollution. Limited research exists on the toxic effects of small-sized nanoplastics on marine fish, especially regarding their post-exposure resilience. In this study, red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) were exposed to small-sized polystyrene nanoplastics (30 nm, PS-NPs) for 7 days for the exposure experiments, followed by 14 days of recovery experiments.

Background & Aims: Both nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and colorectal cancer (CRC) are prevalent worldwide. The effects of concomitant NAFLD on the risk of colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) and its mechanisms have not been definitively elucidated.

Methods: We observed the effect of concomitant NAFLD on CRLM in the mouse model and explored the underlying mechanisms of specific myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) recruitment and then tested the therapeutic application based on the mechanisms.

Nitroxyl (HNO), the single-electron reduction product of nitric oxide (NO), has attracted great interest in the treatment of congestive heart failure in clinical trials. In this paper, we describe the first coumarin-based compound N-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromene-6-sulfonamide (CD1) as a dualfunctional HNO donor, which can release both an HNO signaling molecule and a fluorescent reporter. Under physiological conditions (pH 7.

  • Notable-HCC (NCT05185531) is a phase 1b clinical trial assessing the safety and early effectiveness of combining PD-1 blockade with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
  • Twenty patients received SBRT and the anti-PD-1 drug tislelizumab before surgery, with results showing treatment-related adverse events mostly mild, and no delays or complications in surgery.
  • The trial found a 63.2% objective tumor response rate (with some complete responses) and reported that this neoadjuvant therapy is safe and can effectively shrink tumors before surgery.

Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) is a serine protease characterized by its high expression in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and near absence in adult normal tissues and benign lesions. This unique expression pattern positions FAP as a prospective biomarker for targeted tumor radiodiagnosis and therapy. The advent of FAP-based radiotheranostics is anticipated to revolutionize cancer management.

Nanoplastics are recognized as emerging contaminants that can cause severe toxicity to marine fishes. However, limited researches were focusing on the toxic effects of nanoplastics on marine fish, especially the post-exposure resilience. In this study, red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) were exposed to 5 mg/L polystyrene nanoplastics (100 nm, PS-NPs) for a 7-day exposure experiment, and a 14-day recovery experiment that followed.

Gelatin was widely used as scaffold materials in 3D bio-printing due to its excellent bioactivity and availability and especially that their arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) sequences could efficiently promote cell adhesion and proliferation. In this study, an electroactive and 3D bio-printable hydrogel was prepared through a two-step chemical cross-linking process. Specifically, residual free amino groups of methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) were cross-linked with the aldehyde groups of dibenzaldehyde-terminated telechelic polyethylene glycol (DF-PEG) via Schiff base bonds, forming a gel at 37 °C.

The precise release and characterization of nitroxyl (HNO) gas signaling molecule remain a challenge due to its short lifetime to date. To solve this issue, an azobenzene-based HNO donor (Azo-D1) was proposed as a colorimetric and fluorometric chemosensor for HNO releasing, to release both HNO and an azobenzene fluorescent reporter together. Specifically, the Azo-D1 has an HNO release half-life of ∼68 min under physiological conditions.

Mitochondrial autophagy (mitophagy) is a key physiological process that maintains the homeostasis of mitochondrial quality and quantity. Monitoring mitophagy is of great significance for detecting cellular abnormalities and developing therapeutic drugs. However, there are still very few biomarkers specifically developed for monitoring mitophagy.

Waterborne polymer-cement coatings have been widely applied in building materials due to their organic solvent-free nature, low cost, and eco-friendliness. However, these coatings can easily crack during the drying process as a result of construction environment factors, compromising the barrier performance of the coating and limiting its large-scale application. In this study, a dual-shell self-healing microcapsule was developed, which can effectively heal damage on a macro scale in waterborne polymer-cement coatings.

As an essential component of mechanical equipment, the fault diagnosis of rolling bearings may not only guarantee the systematic operation of the equipment, but also minimize any financial losses caused by equipment shutdowns. Fault diagnosis algorithms based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been widely used. However, traditional CNNs have limited feature representation capabilities, thereby making it challenging to determine their hyperparameters.

Inflammation of chondrocytes plays a critical role in the occurrence and development of osteoarthritis (OA). Recent evidence indicated exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs-Exos) exhibit excellent anti-inflammatory ability in many troublesome inflammatory diseases including OA. In the present study, we aimed to explore the role of human umbilical cord-derived MSCs-Exos (hUC-MSCs-Exos) in treating the inflammation of chondrocytes and its related mechanisms.
