We previously established an in vitro cellular carcinogenesis model of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with a line of human immortalized oral epithelia cells (HIOECs), a line of cancerous HB96 cells, and other cells (HB56 cells) at the early stage of carcinogenesis. In this study, comparative proteomic analysis identified a panel of differentially expressed proteins among these cells, and S100A6 was shown as one of the significantly down-regulated proteins accompanying cellular transformation. S100A6 was further validated for its expression in the three cell lines and in the clinical samples of cancerous and paracancerous tissues from 30 primary OSCC patients.

Objectives: This clinical trial aimed (1) to evaluate the predictability of the osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) technique, (2) to study the influence of simultaneous grafting on the clinical success of placing dental implants in the posterior maxilla using OSFE and (3) to observe the bone changes in the elevated space with OSFE without grafting.

Lower gingival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) frequently invades the mandibular bone and buccal or lingual oral mucosa. In the concept of en bloc surgery of malignant tumors, it is advisable to prefer segmental mandibulectomy for T3-T4 lower gingival carcinoma that had radiologic bone involvement and resection of soft tissue on the buccal or lingual side with negative border of margin. Consequential defects of oral mucosa and mandible need immediate reconstruction to provide the maximum probability of cure and quality of life with minimal donor site morbidity.

The subventricular zone (SVZ) located adjacent to the lateral ventricles is the major site where neural progenitor cells (NPCs) are concentrated in the adult brain. NPCs in the anterior subventricular zone (SVZa) generate neuronal precursors and migrate along a highly localized pathway--the rostral migratory stream (RMS) to the olfactory bulb (OB), where they differentiate into interneurons. To investigate the modulatory effects of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors on differentiation from SVZa NPCs, we firstly examined the distribution of bHLH family members (Mash1, Id2, and Hes1) in cultured mouse SVZa NPCs and evaluated their regulatory effects on differentiation by transfection with Mash1, Id2, or Hes1 eukaryotic expression plasmid.

Overall modes of differential gene expressions were analyzed between human oral/salivary carcinoma cell systems with (MK-1 and ACCM) and without (ZK-1/ZK-2 and ACC2/ACC3) metastatic potential by using micro-array analysis with cancer-associated DNA chips to determine the kinds of genes associated with metastatic behaviors. MK-1 and/or ACCM showed lower levels of gene expression in extracellular matrix-related molecules, such as collagen type IV, laminin, and adhesion molecules such as cadherin 2, but higher levels of genes which control extracellular matrix degradation, such as MMP 9, as well as cell growth and cycle, such as FGF7 and cyclin D1. Among the differentially expressed genes, similar protein expression tendencies for FGF7, laminin, cyclin D1, and collagen type IV were confirmed by immunofluorescence.

Experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN) is a T cell-mediated autoimmune inflammatory demyelinating disease of the peripheral nervous system and an animal model of human inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. AUY954, which targets selectively the sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 1 (S1P(1)), is known to sequester lymphocytes into secondary lymphoid tissues. In EAN rats, AUY954 greatly prevented paraparesis if administrated from the day of immunization.

Objectives/hypothesis: To investigate changes in parotid and submandibular gland volumes of patients with head and neck cancer treated with postoperative intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) or conventional radiotherapy (CRT), and to relate the volume changes to different mean radiation therapy (RT) doses to the parotid and submandibular glands.

Methods: Between May 2007 and May 2008, 82 head and neck cancer patients (oral cavity cancer, 71; oropharynx cancer, 11) were treated with surgery and postoperative RT (IMRT, 40; CRT, 42) at our institution. Every patient underwent four computed tomography (CT) scans: one before RT, one after 3 weeks or at the 15th fraction of RT, one upon completing RT, and one at 2 months after RT; 39 of 82 patients had an additional CT scan at 6 months after RT.
