Metal-halogen exchange reactions are fundamental processes in chemistry that transform organic halides into organometallic reagents. However, using these reactions to build intricate structures in a cascade manner, especially in a catalytic mode, has been a challenge. In this study, we introduce a homoleptic organolanthanum catalyst to initiate lanthanum-halogen exchange and intramolecular carbohalogenation.

Establishing reliable noninvasive tools to precisely diagnose clinically significant liver fibrosis (SF, ≥F2) remains an unmet need. We aimed to build a combined radiomics-clinic (CoRC) model for triaging SF and explore the additive value of the CoRC model to transient elastography-based liver stiffness measurement (FibroScan, TE-LSM). This retrospective study recruited 595 patients with biopsy-proven liver fibrosis at two centers between January 2015 and December 2021.

Objective: In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of 1 μg/kg dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant treatment to ropivacaine in children undergoing upper limb surgeries under ultrasound-guided axillary brachial plexus blocks and general anesthesia.

Methods: We enrolled 90 children (aged 1-8 years; ASA I-II) undergoing closed reduction and internal fixation for upper extremity fractures at the Xiamen Children's Hospital and randomly assigned them to one of two groups: L (injection with 0.25% ropivacaine) or D (injection with 0.

Purpose: To investigate esketamine's impact on inflammation and oxidative stress in ventilated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) rats, examining its regulatory mechanisms.

Methods: Rats were divided into four groups: control group (Con), COPD model group (M), COPD model with saline treatment group (M+S), and COPD model with esketamine treatment group (M+K), with 12 rats in each group. After two months, all rats underwent anesthesia and mechanical ventilation.

Article Synopsis
  • DNA G-quadruplexes (G4s) are unique DNA structures that form from guanine-rich sequences, playing a role in cancer development and making them potential targets for anticancer drugs.
  • Recent studies have highlighted natural products as effective sources for developing drugs that specifically target various DNA G4s, including those associated with key oncogenes.
  • The review presents advances in finding natural small molecules that interact with G4s, along with their mechanisms of action, while also addressing potential opportunities and challenges in drug development focused on these structures.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the impact of dexmedetomidine (DEX) as a local anesthetic adjuvant on postoperative delirium (POD) in elderly patients after elective hip surgery.
  • A total of 120 patients were divided into two groups: one receiving DEX with ropivacaine (Y group) and the other receiving only ropivacaine (R group).
  • Results showed that the Y group had lower rates of POD, required less remedial analgesia, and experienced better postoperative inflammatory markers, although they had a higher incidence of bradycardia compared to the R group.

Purpose: Our investigation utilized a two-sample Mendelian randomization approach to explore the ambiguous bidirectional relationship between Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and depression, furthering insights from existing observational studies.

Methods: In this study, we conducted a bidirectional Mendelian randomization using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) datasets. We initially analyzed depression data from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium and the UK Biobank (n = 500,199), alongside COPD data from the FinnGen Consortium (n = 329,552).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on the frequency and risk factors of postoperative delirium in elderly patients after hip surgery, aiming to identify ways to prevent this condition.
  • - Out of 97 patients analyzed, 32 (32.9%) experienced delirium post-surgery, with contributing factors including age, height, gender, and preoperative health indicators.
  • - A significant finding was that the risk of delirium increased by 12% for every additional 10 years in patient age, and a history of delirium in the recovery unit was a strong predictor of developing postoperative delirium.

Quantification of behaviors in macaques provides crucial support for various scientific disciplines, including pharmacology, neuroscience, and ethology. Despite recent advancements in the analysis of macaque behavior, research on multi-label behavior detection in socially housed macaques, including consideration of interactions among them, remains scarce. Given the lack of relevant approaches and datasets, we developed the Behavior-Aware Relation Network (BARN) for multi-label behavior detection of socially housed macaques.

Acute kidney injury and chronic renal fibrosis are intractable pathological processes to resolve, yet limited strategies are able to effectively address them. Cardamonin (CAD) is a flavonoid with talented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory capacity, and satisfactory biosafety. In our study, animal and cellular models of renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) and unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) were successfully constructed to confirm whether CAD confers protective effects and underlying mechanisms.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects on the dislocation and misalignment of the cuffed end of a double-lumen endobronchial tube (DLT) when a patient moves from a horizontal to a lateral position without fixation.

Methods: A total of 148 patients who had undergone video-assisted thoracoscope surgery were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups: a group in which the periportal end of the DLT was fixed with tape (group I;  = 74) and a group in which the periportal end of the DLT remained unfixed (group II;  = 74). Both groups were given an intravenous induction for double-lumen endobronchial intubation and then moved from a horizontal position to a lateral position, after which the alignment of the bronchial cuffed end of the DLT was assessed using a fiberoptic bronchoscope.

In this protocol, a copper-catalyzed desymmetric protosilylation of prochiral diynes was developed. The corresponding products were obtained in moderate to high yields and enantiomeric ratios. This approach provides a simple method for synthesizing functionalized chiral tertiary alcohols in the presence of a chiral pyridine-bisimidazoline (Pybim) ligand.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of the individualized positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) lung protection ventilation strategy by combining driving pressure (ΔP) and pulmonary ultrasound (LUS)-based titration on lung function and postoperative cognitive function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) during laparoscopic surgery.

Methods: A total of 108 patients with COPD undergoing laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery under general anesthesia were included in this study. They were randomly divided into three groups (n = 36): traditional volume ventilation group (Group C), fixed PEEP 5 cmHO group (Group P), and ΔP combined with LUS-based PEEP titration in the resuscitation room group (Group T).

is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that infects maize and produces aflatoxins. Using biocontrol or developing resistant cultivars to reduce aflatoxin contamination has only achieved limited success. Here, the polygalacturonase gene () was targeted for suppression through host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) to reduce aflatoxin contamination in maize.
