The organ-specific toxicity resulting from microplastic (MP) exposure has been extensively explored, particularly concerning the gut, liver, testis, and lung. However, under natural conditions, these effects are not restricted to specific organs or tissues. Investigating whether MP exposure presents a systemic threat to an entire organism, impacting factors such as lifespan, sleep, and fecundity, is essential.

Altered lipid metabolism is a hallmark of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a common malignancy with a dismal prognosis against which there is a lack of effective therapeutic strategies. Bufalin, a classical Na[Formula: see text]-K[Formula: see text]-ATPase (NKA) inhibitor, shows a potent antitumor effect against HCC. However, the role of bufalin in regulating lipid metabolism-related pathways of HCC remains unclear.

Background: The therapeutic value of targeted therapies in patients with lung cancer is reduced when tumours acquire secondary resistance after an initial period of successful treatment. However, the molecular events behind the resistance to targeted therapies in lung cancer remain largely unknown.

Aims: To discover the important role and mechanism of lncRNA BC in promoting tumor metastasis and influencing clinical prognosis of LUAD.

Background: The immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICIs) therapy has been proven effective in a range of solid tumors including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), non-small cell lung carcinoma and metastatic melanoma. However, only a subset of approximately 20% of patients shows an objective response to anti-PD-1 therapy in HCC. Furthermore, the response to anti-PD-1 therapy is not correlated with programmed cell death 1 ligand expression in tumor tissue.

Chemokines play essential roles in the progression of various human cancers; however, the expression and role of CXC chemokines in pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) have not yet been identified. The aim of this study is to identify the expression patterns, clinical significance and mechanisms of CXC chemokines in regulating tumour microenvironment of PAAD. Three CXC chemokines, including CXCL5, CXCL9, and CXCL10, were significantly overexpressed in PAAD tissues, which were correlated with the poor survival of the patients.

Objective: This study is implemented to probe into the function of lncRNA SBF2-AS1 as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) to sponge microRNA-142-3p (miR-142-3p) in modulating TWF1 expression in the gemcitabine resistance of pancreatic cancer.

Results: LncRNA SBF2-AS1 was highly expressed in pancreatic cancer tissues and cells. SBF2-AS1 was found to be associated with gemcitabine resistance in pancreatic cancer.

Heat shock factors (HSFs) are essential for all organisms to survive exposures to acute stress. Recent years have witnessed the progress in uncovering the importance of HSFs in cancer cell oncogenesis, progression and metastasis. However, their roles in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) proliferation and the underlying mechanism have seldom been discussed.

Accumulating studies have reported that aberrant expression of SLC5A1 is a negative prognostic factor to various cancer patients. Pancreatic cancer tissue has also shown to harbor higher expression of SLC5A1, however how SLC5A1 mediates pancreatic cancer cells growth remains unclear. In this study, we examined the mRNA and protein expressions of SLC5A1 in human pancreatic tissue and various cell lines.

The aim of this study was to identify the function of the Mg transporter protein solute carrier family 41 member 1 SLC41A1 in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and the underlying mechanisms. A total of 27 solute carrier proteins were differentially expressed in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Three of these proteins were correlated with clinical outcomes in patients, among which SLC41A1 was downregulated in tumour.

Pancreatic cancer is a highly malignant tumor of the digestive system. Previous studies have shown that abnormal cell surface glycosylation is associated with cancer metastasis, which suggests that glycosylation changes may open a new window for discovering metastasis-related pathways. In this study, we used a microarray with 55 lectins to screen for altered glycosylation between two metastatic pancreatic cancer lines (Capan-1 and Su.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of pre-treatment plasma hemostatic parameters in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Methods: A total of 320 patients diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer between January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015 were enrolled in this retrospective study. The prognostic significance of hemostatic parameters such as prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen (FBG), platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT), and platelet distribution width (PDW) was determined by univariate and multivariate Cox hazard models.

Background: Previous studies showed that Chromobox protein homolog 3 (CBX3) was overexpressed in several types of human cancers, however its pattern and role in pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) has not yet been understood. The aim of this study was to identify the expression and function of CBX3 in PAAD.

Methods: Data of transcriptomic and protein expression of CBX3 in PAAD were collected from different databases and analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • - Methyl protodioscin (MPD), a key component from the Dioscoreaceae plant, shows promise in fighting pancreatic cancer by inhibiting cell growth and promoting cancer cell death (apoptosis).
  • - The study found that MPD reduces the levels of the oncogene c-Myc, leading to a decrease in glycolysis, which is crucial for cancer cell metabolism.
  • - Experiments conducted on mouse models confirmed the ability of MPD to block tumor growth by reducing glucose uptake in pancreatic cancer cells, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent.

Background: Syndrome ( ZHENG in Chinese) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) refers to the intrinsic characteristics of a pathological process at a certain stage; these characteristics are influenced by internal and external environments and reveal the nature of a disease. Proper syndrome differentiation is the basic principle that guides clinical treatment.

Objective: To have a good understanding of tumor progression and the different mechanisms related to ZHENG that have occurred before and after tumor development and to explore the valid evaluation criteria of different pancreatic cancer syndromes to improve the guiding role of TCM syndrome differentiation in pancreatic cancer treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • CBX3 has been shown to play a significant role in cancer development by influencing processes like gene silencing and DNA repair, yet its specific involvement in pancreatic cancer is underexplored.
  • In experiments silencing CBX3 in pancreatic cancer cell lines, researchers found that its absence decreased cancer cell growth and inhibited aerobic glycolysis, which is critical for cancer cell metabolism.
  • Further investigation revealed that CBX3 negatively regulates the expression of FBP1, a key inhibitor of glycolysis; silencing FBP1 helped counteract the effects of CBX3 knockdown, suggesting that targeting the CBX3-FBP1 pathway could be a promising strategy for pancreatic cancer treatment.

Digestive system neoplasms are the leading causes of cancer-related death all over the world. Solute carrier (SLC) superfamily is composed of a series of transporters that are ubiquitously expressed in organs and tissues of digestive systems and mediate specific uptake of small molecule substrates in facilitative manner. Given the important role of SLC proteins in maintaining normal functions of digestive system, dysregulation of these protein in digestive system neoplasms may deliver biological and clinical significance that deserves systemic studies.
