The aim of this study is to compare ecologically-valid measure (the Cambridge Prospective Memory Test, CAMPROMPT) and laboratory measure (eye-tracking paradigm) in assessing prospective memory (PM) in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs). In addition, eye-tracking indices are used to examine the relationship between PM and other cognitive domains in SSDs patients. Initially, the study sample was formed by 32 SSDs patients and 32 healthy control subjects (HCs) who were matched in sociodemographic profile and the performance on CAMPROMPT.

  • A study of 555 bipolar disorder (BD) patients in China examined differences between those with psychotic symptoms (BD P +) and those without (BD P-).
  • Findings indicated that BD P + patients were more likely to have a BD I diagnosis, experience mania or mixed episodes, and be misdiagnosed as schizophrenia, rather than major depressive disorder.
  • Multivariate analyses showed that BD P + patients had higher rates of hospitalizations and suicidal behaviors, used more antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, but less frequently used antidepressants compared to BD P- patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how spontaneous neural oscillations in different frequency bands are affected in patients with bipolar disorder compared to healthy controls.
  • Patients with bipolar disorder showed a specific decrease in oscillation amplitudes in lower frequency bands within areas of the brain like the posterior medial parietal cortex, while no changes were found in higher frequency bands.
  • Universal abnormalities were also identified, showing increased oscillation amplitudes in the thalamus and left anterior cerebellum, along with decreased amplitudes in the medial superior frontal gyrus, independent of mood states and consistent across various analyses.

Background: Delayed arterial symptomatic epidural hematoma (SEH) on the 14 day after posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) is rare but it may lead to severe complications if not identified and treated in a timely manner. After diagnosis of the current case, early surgical removal of the hematoma and strict hemostasis treatment was accomplished. This case report highlights the importance of swift diagnosis and treatment in SEH patients.

  • Semi-coking wastewater contains harmful compounds, and a new 3D electro-Fenton (3D/EF) process using CuFeO as a catalyst and activated carbon (AC) as an electrode shows promise for treatment.
  • The study explored key factors affecting the removal rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD), revealing an impressive 80.9% reduction under optimal conditions (4 V, 0.3 g CuFeO, 1 g AC, pH 3).
  • Analysis techniques confirmed that hydroxyl radicals are the primary active agents in the process, while other factors like anode oxidation and AC's role in adsorption and catalysis also contribute to wastewater treatment effectiveness.

Suitable picking tenderness is an essential prerequisite for manufacturing tea. However, the influence of picking tenderness of fresh tea leaves on the aromatic components is still unclear. In this study, aromatic profiles and chiral odorants in fresh tea leaves and corresponding baked green teas with five levels of tenderness of two representative cultivars were analysed using stir bar sorptive extraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Chiral volatile compounds are known to be distributed in teas at various enantiomeric ratios. However, the performance of each enantiomer, including aroma characteristics, aroma intensities, and contribution to the overall flavor of tea, is still unclear. In this study, aroma characteristics and intensities of 38 volatile enantiomers in standards and baked green teas with chestnut-like aroma and clean aroma were evaluated by an efficient sequential headspace-stir bar sorptive extraction (seq-HS-SBSE) approach combined with the enantioselective gas chromatography-olfactometry/mass spectrometry (Es-GC-O/MS) technique.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and clinical value of real time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT-3DE) for assessing ventricular systolic dysfunction and dyssynchrony in children with an functional single right ventricle (FSRV) having undergone the Fontan procedure.

Methods: Twenty-five children with an FSRV and 25 healthy children were enrolled in our study. RV volume analysis was performed compared with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the reference standard in FSRV patients.

Background: Challenges remain in quantitative evaluation of right ventricular (RV) function by echocardiography. Multiple-view assessment is believed to provide a more comprehensive quantification of RV function than conventional single-view analysis. Peak systolic longitudinal RV strain (RVLS) measured by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) has clinical and prognostic value.

Objective: To investigate the effects of Zhizi Chuanxiong Capsule (ZCC, ) on abnormal DNA methylation in a rabbit model of atherosclerosis (AS).

Methods: After 1 week of adaptive feeding, 48 New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups: a control group (n=12) fed with normal diet for 22 weeks; a model group (n=12) fed with high fat diet for 14 weeks followed by 8 weeks of normal diet feeding; a low-dose ZCC group (n=12) fed with high fat diet and low-dose ZCC for 14 weeks, followed by 8 weeks of normal diet and low-dose drug; a high-dose ZCC group (n=12) fed with high fat diet and high-dose drug for 14 weeks, followed by 8 weeks of normal diet and high-dose drug. After 22 weeks of feeding, blood samples were taken from the rabbit ear vein, and the genomic DNA was extracted for methylation immunoprecipitation sequencing (Medip-seq).

Objective: Ventricular function assessment is very important for the treatment and prognostic classification of children with a single right ventricle (SRV) after cavopulmonary anastomosis (CPA). However, unusual ventricular shapes can result in inaccurate measurements. The aim of this study was to evaluate velocity vector imaging (VVI) for assessing segmental ventricular function in children with SRV after CPA.

Objective: Clinical decision making in children with congenital and acquired heart disease relies on measurements of cardiac structures using two-dimensional echocardiography. We aimed to establish z-score regression equations for right heart structures in healthy Chinese Han children.

Methods: Two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography was performed in 515 patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the effectiveness and safety of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in female diabetic patients experiencing acute myocardial infarction (AMI), comparing them to male patients.
  • Results showed that female patients had a higher prevalence of serious heart conditions and complications, and their PCI outcomes, such as blood flow restoration, were less favorable than those of males.
  • The findings suggest that female diabetic patients with AMI face greater risks post-PCI and require enhanced medical attention and risk factor management.

Assessment of ventricular dysfunction and asynchrony is very important in predicting the outcome for children with a single right ventricle. However, the assessment is inaccurate and subjective because of the unusual ventricular shape. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and clinical value of velocity vector imaging for assessing longitudinal systolic ventricular dysfunction and intraventricular asynchrony in children with a single right ventricle.

The VP2 structural protein of parvovirus can produce virus-like particles (VLPs) by a self-assembly process in vitro, making VLPs attractive vaccine candidates. In this study, the VP2 protein of canine parvovirus (CPV) was expressed using a baculovirus expression system and assembled into parvovirus-like particles in insect cells and pupae. Electron micrographs of VLPs showed that they were very similar in size and morphology when compared to the wild-type parvovirus.
