Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) can enhance the ability of recombinant strains to express heterologous proteins under low-oxygen conditions. However, its mechanism of action in the Pichia pastoris expression system remains unclear. In this study, three VHb construction strategies were designed to elucidate the mechanisms by which VHb promotes heterologous protein expression in P.

Background: Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) induced lethal tissue injury in myocardium. FoxM1 (Forkhead Box M1), expressed in proliferating cardiac progenitor cells, could regulate myocardial development. However, the role of FoxM1 in I/R-induced myocardial injury has not been reported yet.

Understanding carboxyl-metal ligand interaction has great significance in analytical chemistry. Herein, we use resonant surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to probe the physiochemical interaction and conformation change in several metal ion-carboxyl coordination complex systems adsorbed on the surface of plasmonically resonant metal nanostructures. Our SERS results and density function theory calculations jointly reveal that low-valence metal ions (such as K and Pb) tend to bind to the carboxyl active site of a Raman tag molecule, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA), in a unidentate binding mode of low binding energy whereas high-valence metal ions (such as Fe) favor a bidentate binding mode of relatively high binding energy.

Microbial oxidation is the only biological sink of atmospheric methane (CH). It is essential to understand the variation of CH fluxes among different grassland use types for developing low-emission management system. Here, we measured the CH flux and the soil methane-oxidizing bacteria abundance in a typical steppe under grazing, mowing and fencing management in central Inner Mongolia, with the aims to determine the effects of these grassland use types on CH flux, and to test the hypothesis that pmoA functional gene abundance regulates CH fluxes.

Background: Right ventricular apical (RVA) pacing is related to adverse left ventricular (LV) remodelling. This study assessed changes in global longitudinal strain (GLS) after permanent RVA pacing, and investigated whether GLS at one month can predict later LV ejection fraction (LVEF) decline.

Methods: The study enrolled 68 patients with normal LVEF (≥50%) who underwent dual chamber pacemaker implantation for third-degree atrioventricular block.

Chiral cysteine-directed assemblies of Au@Ag core-shell nanocrystals (CSNCs) and Au/Ag nanorods with end-to-end (ETE) and side-by-side (SBS) configurations are fabricated and used to explore the definitive factors affecting the chiral response. The interaction between cysteine and metallic nanoparticles leads to intense and widely tunable plasmonic circular dichroism (PCD) ranging from a near-infrared (NIR) to ultraviolet (UV) regime. More importantly, it was observed that, in Ag nanorod and CSNC samples with varied aspect ratios, the ETE assembled patterns exhibit much larger PCD enhancement than SBS assemblies in an l/d-cysteine solvent environment.

Detailed understanding of the interaction between a chiral molecule and a noble metal surface is essential to rationalize and advance interfacial self-assembly of amino acids and metal-mediated anchoring of proteins. Here we demonstrate that individual Au@Ag core-shell nanocuboids can serve as a plasmonic reporter of an extended helical network formed among chemisorbed cysteine molecules, through generating an interband absorption enhanced, Ag-surface-exclusive circular dichroism (CD) band in the UV region. The observed unusual, strong CD response in the hybrid Au@Ag-cysteine system can be used to probe in real time conformational evolution and structural rearrangement of biomolecules in general and also monitor the interfacial interaction between a metal surface and an adsorbed molecule, opening up the possibility of using Ag nanostructures as promising stereochemically attuned nanosensors.

This paper reports a simple label-free high-sensitive method for detecting low-concentration persistent organic pollutants and explosive materials. The proposed method combines surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and magnetomotive enrichment of the target molecules on the surface of Ag nanoparticles (NPs). This structure can be achieved through self-assembling integration of Ag NPs with ferromagnetic Fe3O4 microspheres, forming a hybrid SERS nanoprobe with both optical and magnetic properties.

Optical probes of heterogeneous catalytic reactions are of great importance for in situ determination of the catalytic activity and monitoring of the reaction process. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy could be used as a sensitive optical probe for this purpose provided that plasmonic metal nanoparticles for Raman enhancement are properly integrated with catalytic metals to form a single entity. Herein we present a facile approach for synthesizing Au@Pt core-shell nanostructures with a controllable surface density of sub-5 nm Pt nanoparticles on the surface of Au nanorods.

The emphasis in the term 'Green Transportation' is on the word 'green'. Green transportation focuses on the construction of a slow transport system with a visually pleasing, easy and secure trip environment composed of urban parks, green roadside spaces and some other space that is full of landscape plants. This trip environment encourages residents to make trip choices that reduce fuel consumption and pollution and is one of the most important ways of popularizing green transportation.
