Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how ultrafine recycled powder (URP) from construction waste affects hydration, setting time, and shrinkage in Portland cement pastes.
  • The addition of URP accelerates hydration by providing more nucleation sites, leading to quicker setting times but increased chemical shrinkage.
  • At 7.5% URP, cement mortar shows improved strength with compressive strength reaching 23.0 MPa and flexural strength at 3.7 MPa after 3 days of curing, due to secondary hydration reactions.

Article Synopsis
  • * Higher density balls yield quicker grinding results, but lower density balls (5.8 g/cm) require less energy while maintaining effective grinding performance.
  • * The findings suggest that selecting optimal grinding medium density can lead to significant energy savings and help reduce carbon emissions in the grinding process.

Herein, the toughening mechanism and effects of 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (3-APTES) intercalation in calcium-silicate-hydrate (CSH) structures were investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. CSH established a model using 11 Å-tobermorite to simulate the tensile properties, toughness, adsorption energy, average orientation displacement and radial distribution function of 3-APTES intercalation at different Ca/Si ratios under conditions of a CVFF force field, an NVT system, and 298 K temperature. Simulation results demonstrate that 3-APTES alters the fracture process of CSH and effectively enhances its tensile properties and toughness.

To investigate the role of neuropilin1 (Nrp1) in glucose metabolism and proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells and to analyze its mechanism of action. The CRISPR gene knockout technique was used to knock out the Nrp1 gene in two HCC cell lines. The effect of Nrp1 on the proliferation of HCC cells was assessed in the CCK8 assay and plate cloning assay.

When aluminium-rich phase minerals are added to Portland cement, Al atoms will enter the C-S-H and Al, then a substitution reaction will occur, forming a hydrated silica-calcium aluminate (C-A-S-H), which changes the molecular structure of the cement material. Due to limitations in experimental methods, the research on the bonding effect between corroded ions and Al-substituted structures is still unclear. Here, the mechanism of an Al substitution reaction affecting the adsorption of chloride and sulphate ions was studied using simulation.

Finding new agents to enhance the strength of alkali-activated (ground granulated blast furnace slag) GGBS is beneficial for environmental protection. Here, we reveal the effect of pregelatinized starch-modifying calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) particles on the nanostructure tailoring of NaOH-activated GGBS hydrates. The results show that, for the synthetic modified C-S-H, the pregelatinized starch absorbs on the surface of C-S-H, which modifies the silicate chains and crystal structure.

Comprehensive semantic segmentation on renal pathological images is challenging due to the heterogeneous scales of the objects. For example, on a whole slide image (WSI), the cross-sectional areas of glomeruli can be 64 times larger than that of the peritubular capillaries, making it impractical to segment both objects on the same patch, at the same scale. To handle this scaling issue, prior studies have typically trained multiple segmentation networks in order to match the optimal pixel resolution of heterogeneous tissue types.

Exploring and modifying the C-S-H structure at a micro-nano level is an effective solution to improve the performance of Portland cement. Compared with organics inserting C-S-H, the research on the performance of a polymer-binding C-S-H structure from nanoscale to macroscale is limited. In this work, the mechanical properties of a modified C-S-H, using hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the binders, are evaluated.

The quantitative detection, segmentation, and characterization of glomeruli from high-resolution whole slide imaging (WSI) play essential roles in the computer-assisted diagnosis and scientific research in digital renal pathology. Historically, such comprehensive quantification requires extensive programming skills to be able to handle heterogeneous and customized computational tools. To bridge the gap of performing glomerular quantification for non-technical users, we develop the Glo-In-One toolkit to achieve holistic glomerular detection, segmentation, and characterization via a single line of command.

Recent studies have demonstrated the diagnostic and prognostic values of global glomerulosclerosis (GGS) in IgA nephropathy, aging, and end-stage renal disease. However, the fine-grained quantitative analysis of multiple GGS subtypes (e.g.

There has been a long pursuit for precise and reproducible glomerular quantification in the field of renal pathology in both research and clinical practice. Currently, 3D glomerular identification and reconstruction of large-scale glomeruli are labor-intensive tasks, and time-consuming by manual analysis on whole slide imaging (WSI) in 2D serial sectioning representation. The accuracy of serial section analysis is also limited in the 2D serial context.

Identifying the phase evolution and revealing the chemical bonds of hydrated cements accurately is crucial to regulate the performance of cementitious materials. In this paper, a coupled Raman/BSE-EDS analysis was proposed to determine the chemical bonds of tricalcium silicate hydrates and the interface transition zone (ITZ) between inner C-S-H and anhydrates. The results show that the Raman/BSE-EDS method can accurately identify the chemical bonds of inner C-S-H and inner ITZ regions, which confirms the mixed structure of inner C-S-H and nano calcium hydroxide (CH).

Mineral additions can eliminate the conversion in calcium aluminate hydrates and thus inhibit the future strength retraction of calcium aluminate cement (CAC). However, the impacts of these additions on the protection capacity of CAC concrete in relation to the corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement remains unclear. This paper focused on the corrosion behavior of steel reinforcement in slag, limestone powder, or calcium nitrate-modified CAC mortars via XRD and electrochemical methods (corrosion potential, electrochemical impedance, and linear polarization evaluation).

Article Synopsis
  • * It focuses on the hydration products of tricalcium silicate, specifically analyzing calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) using advanced techniques like Raman spectra and scanning electron microscopy.
  • * Results indicate that restrictive spaces enhance the formation of highly polymerized C-S-H structures, while the amount of water in micropores does not significantly affect the polymeric structure during hydration.

Object detection networks are powerful in computer vision, but not necessarily optimized for biomedical object detection. In this work, we propose CircleNet, a simple anchor-free detection method with circle representation for detection of the ball-shaped glomerulus. Different from the traditional bounding box based detection method, the bounding circle (1) reduces the degrees of freedom of detection representation, (2) is naturally rotation invariant, (3) and optimized for ball-shaped objects.
