With the increasing demand for eco-friendly, non-petroleum-based natural rubber (NR) products, sepiolite, a naturally abundant, one-dimensional clay mineral, has been identified as a suitable material for reinforcing NR through the latex compounding method. To create superior NR/sepiolite composites, three silane coupling agents with different functional groups were used to modify sepiolite in situ via grafting or adsorption during the disaggregation and activation of natural sepiolite, which were subsequently mixed with natural rubber latex (NRL) to prepare the composites. The results showed that the modified sepiolite improved the dispersion and interfacial bonding strength with the rubber matrix.

This article demonstrates the one-pot reaction, an efficient and environmentally friendly organic synthesis method, utilized to prepare the silanized silica-encapsulated calcium carbonate@natural rubber composites (SSC@NR), following first mixing the calcium carbonate (CaCO) solution, silica (SiO) sol solution and a small amount of Si-69 solution, to modify the surface of CaCO particles, and then wet mixing with natural rubber latex. The obtained silanized silica-encapsulated calcium carbonate (SSC) particles were tested by TGA, FTIR and XRD, to substantiate the effect of surface modification. Moreover, the effects of the amount of SSC on the Mooney viscosity, curing characteristics, physical and mechanical properties and dynamic mechanical properties of the SSC@NR were investigated.

Novel, fully biobased shape memory thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) were prepared using two sustainable biopolymers, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), and modified natural gum (EUG--GMA), via a dynamic vulcanization technique. Simultaneously, in situ compatibilization was achieved in the TPVs to improve interfacial adhesion and the crosslinked modified gum (EUG) was in "netlike" continuous state in the PLA matrix to form "sea-sea" phase structure. The promoted interface and co-continuous structure played critical roles in enhancing shape memory capacity and toughness of the TPVs.

Shape memory composites of trans-1,4-polyisoprene (TPI) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) with easily achievable transition temperatures were prepared by a simple physical blending method. Carbon black (CB) was introduced to improve the mechanical properties of the TPI/LDPE composites. The mechanical, cure, thermal and shape memory properties of the TPI/LDPE/CB composites were investigated in this study.

In many rubber dynamic applications such as tires and seals, imparting excellent flex fatigue properties and processing behavior are of prime importance. Research in this direction has been done based on a judicious choice of polymer type or a blend thereof and the compounding ingredients. In this study, the effect of micro-spherical SiO on the flex fatigue properties and processing behavior of natural rubber (NR) is studied.

A novel graphene-silicon dioxide hybrid (HGS) was prepared by plant polyphenol-tannic acid (TA) functionalized pristine graphene (G-TA) and primary amine-containing silane coupling agent modified SiO (Si-NH). Through strong hydrogen-bonding interaction between the phenolic hydroxyl groups on G-TA and primary amine groups on Si-NH, SiO was uniformly loaded to the surface of graphene. Due to the synergistic dispersion effect of graphene and SiO, which prevents restacking and re-aggregating of both graphene and SiO, HGS hybrids were distributed evenly in the natural rubber (NR) matrix (HGS@NR).
